Hello chaps,
This is my first post. I am a KB newbie but recently got interested in the interface many computer users often neglect. I am doing a fair amount of writing for my PhD and thought it best to invest in a good board. After some research I opted for the Filco full sized board with Cherry MX browns - an obvious choice in reality. I have mod'ed it slightly as I am a Mac user, I ordered some blank keycaps from WASD and a pair of 'command keys' at the same time. I remain unhappy with the match for the time being for it is better than having those horrible Windows keys, that is for sure. At the same time, I also opted in for o-rings, as the keys bottoming out were a little coarse. This cheap mod has made a huge difference, I think FILCO should do this in their factory! I went for a fairly stiff o-ring.
I now have purchased a second hand Cherry G84 (in white) for use on the go and read with some interest about how it doens't seem to be a popular board, let alone a popular switch. For my needs it is almost perfect. I love the weightlessness of it! The world's smallest mechanical KB I am sure.
The FILCO MINILA is my list to try but the price puts me off massively, as does the weight. Time will tell as I just got the G84. I'll report back in a few months of hard use, and will reassess my portable KB needs then.
In the meantime, I look forward to meeting likeminded 'proper' KB users on here.
With best wishes,
SY

Welcome to the community, I joined recently also, and I have enjoyed it a lot so far; I am pretty sure you will do it as well. As you, I am also a researcher at Purdue University, visiting under a Fulbright Grant.
I prefer small mechanical keyboards, as you do, which is not the easiest combination. I am glad I got a KBC Poker, its design concept is a very good example of the characteristics of an actual mechanical cherry keyboard in a very small size. There are a few iterations of it with some modifications named Pure, I have seen a site who is selling them in Europe, maybe you should consider them.

Hello,
Many thanks for your message. What is your research examining?
I'm a Law PhD in my third year... the light is at the end of tunnel.
Would you be able to send me a link of the Pure KBs you mention? For me, portability is key, as the computers I use at school are very good large screen Dell's running i5 processors, however the KBs as I am sure you are well aware, are standard cheap dome membrane boards, terrible for heavy use. I think the school should really provide better quality boards as the risk of RSI is great. Given the large fees we pay, I am sure affordability is not an issue.
The FILCO is pure silk but not portable really, too heavy and I won't want my prized possession to be damaged.
With best wishes,
SY
