Title: CM QFR Top Case Customization
Post by: Gupgup on Wed, 03 April 2013, 18:09:29: Hello everyone! This is a new topic moved from this one. (http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=41841.0)

This is being held so that people can get a Custom Case for either their QFR/Phantom/Filco.

I just got off the phone with the painter and he said with combined sanding and painting he would probably charge $15 per keyboard top cover.

I think that is pretty fair considering you pretty much have to sand the insides of the frame by hand.

Anywho, I'm also allowing people to just buy a CM QFR Case by itself, no customizing involved(Although I encourage you to get it painted, they're going to look amazing)

I know the prices are missing a lot of things, but you can get a rough estimate and I will fill the things missing in a couple of days hopefully. Also, I wanted to get this thread out there so we can start getting a mind for what colors we would like. Keep in mind that there will be a very small price divvied out throughout all orders for the price of the paint.

Update: No longer taking orders for non-painted cases due to the fact that we need a minimum amount of painted ones so it is worth the painters time to him. Took effect April 17 20:37

Will get cases in sometime next week, and have a painted case only a few days after! I will post pictures of process and what not!

I will be invoicing once I have a picture of the final product and everyone is happy with it, if you aren't you may cancel your order obviously :/ I don't want to invoice prematurely and have people not like the outcome. I know it is just a "painted case" but I'd like everyone to be satisfied with it.

Yeah they do! I contacted their CM Rep and he is giving some pretty good deals. Should have done this when they first came out :p

I will know that for sure by tomorrow hopefully, but it is very similar to the type of paint used on Front Doors in homes, not identical but similar.

I haven't had a case done professionally before by this guy, so no :/

that's what I thought, without the bottom plate how you are suppose to install your phantom..........

that's what I thought, without the bottom plate how you are suppose to install your phantom..........

You do a massive dollop of hot glue

and then just carve a rectangular base outta the blob you just epic-ally put down... epically...

how hard can this be... master of the rectangle.

I could do it myself when my case arrives but it would be better if done before the paint job.

as someone who has painted a QFR i think the top case painted is all you need. also it is kind of cool having a two tone case. i painted my top cover a peach like pink and it looks ab fab with my CCnG caps.

questions like this obviously don't belong in a group buy thread, but anyway, you can of course change the switches on a qfr. it requires (de-)soldering and plate mounted switches to replace them. you can find tutorials on how to do this on youtube.

Yes, sorry I've been so busy with the CCnG Group Buy that I haven't had the chance to take a picture. This is one that I painted myself, the ones painted in this GB will look much better!

Also, I'll be PMing everyone that ordered a custom case right now and get to deciding on three colors. I'm thinking right now that red and white are for sure, and either purple or pink for the third color? Let me know what you think.

Right now red and white are in for sure, I'm working on getting samples back for actual color codes, and either Purple Blue or Pink will be the last option.

I am also going to order 15 grey and 15 black cases, so when the time comes (for the people ordering a normal case) you'll have the option of either. There is a total of 8 cases that will be sold just as a non-painted case, the rest will be sanded and painted!

Hope to get the Top Covers purchased by Friday.

Will update accordingly!

I think that they 'stand out' more compared to black/beige ones, you can't buy stock kb in these colours

They will have branding on the top side of the cover, the guy is able to sand them still, but that $15 dollar fee includes sanding and a paint job.

I've mentioned a few times that doing a proxy for international orders would be a good idea.

I would assume postal and packaging will not be more than £5 (for singles), providing CM Storm sells them with some soft of cardboard as packaging so I can just throw it into a bubble wrap postal packet.

Would that 30-40$ postal be regardless of weight? So how many confirmed orders to UK you have so far.

Yes you will be! I'll also be sending out invoices sometime tomorrow for those who ONLY ordered a regular case!

To give out a time frame, I'll be ordering the cases and getting the color codes and ordering paint on Monday.

I'll hopefully get them by Friday, and then he can start sanding and be ready to paint by the next Monday.

A couple coats should take a couple days, but he is working two jobs at the moment so who knows. Best case scenario is Wednesday he is done painting.

After that, I'll hopefully get everyones custom painted keyboard shipping out by the following Monday!

I think that is pretty good!

It says on the website that for a medium flat rate box (priority mail) it is $59.95, but that cannot be right.

I've been thinking about this also. The thing is this: I have about 15 cases taken/called for. The other 15 I plan on selling in my classifieds thread so I don't lose money. I ordered the 30 so people could get a case for 13.5 rather than 15$.

If you'd like to wait and see a finished case, please do. I will need to get rid of the remaining some 15 cases.

These last 15 will be painted 5 red 5 white and 5 of our third undecided color, also.

judging by the fact the filco tkl and the cmstorm QFR look to have different areas where the usb cable goes out it doesnt look like the QFR top would work with the filco bottom, or at least not without some modding which would destroy this custom paint work.

if you had the full QFR case then i think it would fit but like the Phantom, the Filco has a standoff that is different from the CMStorm and it would have to be shaved down in the cmstorm case to fit it. not worth it really for the filco

Try to get order in ASAP, but it really won't cap. I'm no longer taking orders for just plain keyboards though. The ones that have the form filled out as of now get theirs, but from now on only customized ones will be allowed. This is because there is a minimum amount the guy said he'd take so he doesn't waste a day of work for nothing.

So I watched WFD's video on the ducky not fitting into a vortex case. thats not exactly what I asked about, Its only the top side of the case and no plates are involved. So will these fit a Ducky YOTD? If it is, maybe ill order another case :)

I hope to have them done in a week or two, yes. The cases should arrive Wednesday and I'll have a sample before then by using the one case I have. Then we will order the paint and that shouldn't take too long.

I will keep an eye out for the next round. Definitely interested in a plain black case at a good price. To order one from CM and have it shipped to Canada costs almost as much as a new QFR.

I did think the best pairing of these keys might be the red wood case that you can only buy on the keyboard co website.

Holy smokes, you're right! Well spotted!

I noticed that Commodore 64 was darker than Commodore 128 or Amiga covers.
Those would be more like that latte or maybe this Elm color (http://www.iconsume.co.uk/spray-paint-supplies-c8/spray-paint-c124/montana-gold-elm-400ml-p4546).

You get a casing, you rub it down with sandpaper, you get some paint and apply and that's all?

(I'm thinking of doing my own painting. Am mainly worried that with my poor (actually, lack of) skills, I can't do a lasting or attractive job the way a professional painter can.

He had reserved time, but then it got really nice out after such a long crappy weather streak so he couldn't work on these rather than legit jobs, he said he had to make up for lost time. Which is completely understandable, it's just bad circumstances for us :/

I'm going in to his shop tomorrow and I'll get an update, thanks guys!

Refund sent, great news everyone. Cases are "set" to be done by end of this week! Now keep in mind, this guy has been sketchy so far, but I have a good feeling they are going to be done.

I'll keep you all updated, and if they are done I plan on packing them all up and shipping them all out Monday!

Yes, the cases are currently getting a shine coat put on for best look possible(I thought we were done but he decided they should also get a nice finish coating) but unfortunately the painter had some family issues and had to stay at the hospital, I'm going to try to get an eta on when they'd be dry and ready to pick up.

This would really be amazing, I would love to do this with you. That way I could refund the payment part and just charge for shipping and actual cost. And of course I will pay for shipping and paint! Downside: he sprayed them a couple times over the course of time he had them (not enough for a good enough coat, hence why we canceled through him) so they need to be sanded again, only 6 though.

Let me know what you think, I'd love to get these patient people their cases :P

I assume there's probably a primer for it as well, if it requires a primer over plastic. If you want, let me know what your painter was using. Otherwise I can do oil enamel, as that's what's been accessible to me from nearby auto-supply stores and Home Depot (and some from Amazon).

Are people interested in them being flat colors or metallic? I know of a nice metallic Red ("candy apple red") and can also do deeper blue in a metallic color. Otherwise, flat colors. And what was the shade of "Light Blue"? Aqua? Cyan? Pure light blue? Just trying to figure out enamel equivalents if that's what I'll be doing.

P.S.: I will also add "black metallic" and "green with silver flake" (on the bluish side) as options. Otherwise, any color I can get ahold of in the Rust-Oleum Painter's Touch 2X line.

I'll probably do 3-5 per day for sure--but we'll see (sanding will be the slowing factor--painting itself doesn't take long): could be more. I'd probably do it in batches (sand all the covers for white, paint white, while white dries sand covers for red, paint red, etc.) I would wait around 3 days before shipping out--depends on the kind of paint I'd use. If it's oil, it'll be stinky for the first week or so, because oil takes some time to cure, and when a cover will be all wrapped up in packaging material, all the evaporation will be trapped in the box during shipping. So if enamels are what will be used--don't be surprised by the oily / chemically smell for the first few days!

P.S.: I know you guys have been waiting a long time, so I'll take a bunch of photos to show the progress.

I'm tending toward the medium neutral red (one on the left called "sunrise red", although the photo does not represent it well). But if more people prefer darker red ("regal red"), I'll use that instead.

I'm trying to plan for how I will be shipping them out and trying to imagine boxes. The only thing that comes to mind is pretty much making custom boxes out of larger ones. I figured I'd ask here just in case someone has a bright idea of a good box source for single or double 14" x 5.5" x 1" covers and save me time of making a lot of boxes :) Otherwise I need to get on cranking those out :)

Found some huge cardboard boxes--will see about making boxes from those :)

Let the painting begin!

Today, I have received all the covers, and many have been pre-sanded, so I've been inspecting them and polishing them a bit with finer sand paper, as there's some unevenness that I've discovered just a bit ago when painting. I have started with single color orders of Light Blue / Cyan (semi-gloss) and Deep Metallic Blue (satin) today. Going to work on all the reds and whites in the coming days.

If anyone wants to change their red / white order to a different color, please let me know ASAP. The colors I already have on hand are cyan, metallic flake cool green, metallic flake blue (as pictured), metallic flake red-orange, medium flake silver, metallic flake black, light aqua satin (flat color), lilac (flat color--would be good with the Lily set GB). The teal all the way on the right is actually quite saturated, so I wouldn't personally recommend it, unless you're really into that kind of color.

I HATE the stupid rubber coating on these covers. Many came pre-sanded, but not entirely, and unfortunately a bunch have been painted with something else, so removing that paint is tough.

Thank you, but I am just one person, and I have a job (not painting), so I can only handle so much at a time. I can't see myself doing this on a regular basis! No more painting for other people for a while after I'm done with these (and 3 other people who've arranged something with me in addition).

How does this original painter claim to be a professional? He took forever to do a half-assed job, then gave up halfway through.

Huge props to Photoelectric for saving the GB. The finish looks really nice. How long does it take for each one?

Some paint dries to touch really fast and can be re-coated faster (Rust-Oleum Painter's Touch), some takes significantly longer (like the gloss red and light blue / cyan). I'm doing a cover for someone today (separate arrangement), and the paint they chose requires 10 minutes between coats, so at least an hour or more just for that cover. Then after drying for a day or two (depends on paint), I wet sand some covers if they need it and recoat / touch up. When everything looks satisfactory and is sufficiently dry, I polish with compounds.

Some of these are mostly ready to send out, but I'm waiting for them to dry more and smell less :)

EDIT: looks like the sky can't make up its mind about the rain--might get to do some more painting after all!

Unfortunately this round of cover painting is finished. I'm not sure if Gupgup or anyone else will organize another in the future. But I'd encourage you to have a look at the QFR top cover customization threads in the GH's 6-year Anniversary sub forum for some ideas and maybe try your hand at customizing your cover yourself!

I wish I could but I live in an appartment and there is absolutely nowhere for me to even try and paint. Also I know if I tried to do it I would end up ruining the case.
Is there anywhere else that you know of that I could get it painted? I really like the lighter color blue a few posts up. It would match my rig perfectly.

The Blue is not as Cyan as I wanted but I do like it. Was there more than one type of Blue for this?

The pics of the Orange are awesome - kinda wish I would have gotten that instead of White. Hindsight is 20 20.

The original order list I saw said "light blue", but when I got that paint that was more cyan than pure lighter blue because I liked the shade.

That blue is almost the exact color I need for my QFR case to match my rig.

Look up Montana Gold 100% Cyan color. It's close to that, a tad colder. The actual color name is Rust-Oleum Maui Blue. I'm guessing mushu wanted something more green, like turquoise. I don't have easy access to Montana Gold paints.
