Title: New realforce keyboard - Realforce HiPro
Post by: calavera on Thu, 04 April 2013, 04:35:10
This full 104 layout realforce was released today. Things to note:

- new stepped (taller) key caps seen in older keyboards
- new color theme
- 45g uniform

Due to the new key cap design, they're not interchangeable with current realforce line of keyboards.
Pricing is about the same. No official word on a 87 TKL version but my guess is very likely.

cool beans. spherical topre caps with matched longer sliders to keep the caps stable. same switch mechanism and same key travel as before.

color of board in pic is also very cool; 10AE grey keys on 10ae dark grey/black chassis.

might have to pick one of these up if they make it in an 87 key w/ 55g uniform :D

there is an all-30g ansi topre board, it looks much like this one with grey keycaps.

Whoa, talk about retro styling.  Forget about the '80's or '90's, this is a throwback to the 1970's.  Most of you guys probably can't remember when keyboards looked like this.  I have to think back to middle school.  But I likes it, and I'll probably get one as soon as it's available in the US.

Huh, I'm sure I saw this in December or so. Pretty sure it's not only my imagination (for once). Maybe not in ANSI layout though.

It was my imagination. Saw it in September (http://deskthority.net/news-reviews-f4/108ug-hipro-spherical-keycap-realforce-announced-t3812.html). o:

Anyway, looks somewhat nice. I'm not so sure if I'll buy one, but I'll make sure to try one at least!

Yeah, not sure I'd like the taller keys, honestly. Not that big a fan of the spherical.

But nice to see Topre branching out, more choice == better

Does anybody think that the keyboard body(frame) is too small for the new keycap?

I do...but then again...I'm a fan of cases with more plastic directly below the spacebar (re: IBM Model Ms, Fs, Dell AT101s, etc.).

Post by: DamienG on Thu, 04 April 2013, 16:45:06
Shame they didn't take the opportunity to reduce the space between the F-key's and the back of the keyboard. It's a bit of complaint I have with my 88UB. Makes it look a bit old.

Doesn't look like spherical caps at all, just horizontal cylindrical.

Love the colour scheme, just wish they'd do it with an 87u!  The longer plungers and housings should make the keys more stable, but what about friction?

If a TKL version doesn't get released (although my guess is that it will), there's a chance that these new plungers can be swapped onto a 87u plate if someone wanted to try modding it.

Hell, when I was in high school, our math lab had one calculator. Class of 1975, when most of these whipper snappers were just a lustful twinkle in daddy's eye. I got my first IBM 8088 in about 1983. Dual floppies. Wow, times have changed....

There are actually a grand total of 11 realforces with ps/2 ports, 5 of which you can buy right now (Though all in Japan). If you count the OEM keyboards, including the CS NEO Realforce, there are a total of 36 topres with PS/2 ports, according to the deskthority list anyways.

In general I've seen a few of them on sale in the past year or two on auction sites in Japan and Taobao. Its similar to getting your hands on other vintage and market specific keyboards (Like those cherry POS keyboards).

P.S. Oh and the G-Tune Topre Gaming Keyboard is also PS/2

Crazy bumping here, but I tried a 30g (if I recall correctly at least) JIS version out yesterday, and while the keycaps felt nice, I don't think it's worth buying it only because of the caps, if you don't happen to be a super fan.
For me, the most important thing when buying a Topre is the Topre, I guess. :)

(I'd however think of buying one if I had space in my travelling bag, despite what I just said. Sometimes this hobby sucks.)

Yeah, it's restocked here:

Do me a favor and order it, then review it.  I can't find a review anywhere.  The video makes it look crazy loud, which would be a deal breaker for me.  Someone please do a review!!!

Well since this has been brought back to life I figure I'll give my 2 cents on the matter since at this point I've tried Type Heaven (45g), Realforce 104U (Variable), and HiPro (45g).

KEY WEIGHT

Since I haven't tried 55g so I can't comment on it, but I definitely like 45g better than variable.  Variable just feels weird and inconsistent, and the 35g keys feels mushy.

But definitely go with uniform weight.

REALFORCE OR HI PRO

So I've tried HiPro for about 2 weeks before I return it.  Keycap/Switch feel is amazing, definitely better than the standard Realforce.

Some keys have a hard bottom out which makes it feels almost more mechanical.

But why did I return it if it's amazing?  Keycap profile.  I can't get used to the profile no matter what, I even tried tilting it with different angle.  It just feels way overly sculpted and I'm always hitting the edge so overall feels like it takes more effort to type.

That and some keys are inconsistent, for example only the flat non-angled keys have a hard bottom out.  Non-angled keys being the ASDF row and all the keys outside alpha zone (Esc, F1, F2, Arrow, Home, End, Number Pad Keys.... etc).  While all the sculpted keys have a regular soft bottom out like normal Topre should.

Though the flat keys definitely feels better so they should've just made the entire keyboard 1 profile (flat) and I would've been happy with it.

If Topre decide to revise this keyboard in the future then I'd definitely consider it again, but at the moment I just can't use that profile.

Hope this helps.

It was on sale from NCIX Canada for a while, I think they were trying to get rid of it so it's all out of stock now.

I think they import some Topre in to test the water in the Canadian market, I'm assuming it's not selling well so I don't see them restocking them anymore.

:(
