Title: travel case
Post by: Surnia on Tue, 16 April 2013, 11:11:49
Has anyone ever looked into a travel case for their keyboards? I finally have a compact on the way for work (choc mini), but I'm thinking about how to transport between work and home. As far as I've been able to find, I either pickup a pelican of the appropriate size (bit bulky) or ask EK if the HHKB cases fit the 75% boards. Mainly I'm looking for something that works as a case without applying force to the keys while in transport.

I remember a while back somebody recommending an empty poker chip case and then shaping foam to support a keyboard

sounds about right, the problem being that keyboards are about half the width of anything standard...

Maybe a neoprene sock? Or have someone knit a case >_>

People have said gunsocks work. Ttesports and Razer also sell keyboard carrying bags. I'm having my sister sew me a custom case.

This is one of those times where my call of "pics or it didn't happen" will go unheeded. No pics. :D

Here is mine, I bought a leather pants in a second hand store for €8 and my friend, who knows how to handle a sewing machine, made it into this.

It's a perfect fit for my Filco TKL!
I hope I gave you some ideas, making a bag can be pretty cheap if you know the right people. ;)

Beautiful case Kenny! No excess pressure on the switches I hope?

I think I'm leaning on the Pelican route right now... the Hardback 1085 is wide enough for the Noppoo (or should be) internally, with Pick n Pluck foam I can space it perfectly. The additional space I can use for various things like cables (OTG adapter for the tablet, and the USB NKRO workaround if necessary), Pencil case, and I can put a folder+tablet on top. Essentially becomes a suitcase that has everything for mobile computing and pen + paper!  Make a Paracord shoulder strap and its all done...

So some unknown person's junk is probably rubbing on your keyboard everyday, Kenny?

That's a nice aluminum case...

Are those lacquered keys on the Poker? Very fitting to put a Poker in a chip case!

Ha, I've never looked at it like that.. but luckily I washed the pants before using it for my keyboard! :D

No, it's got enough extra space so no keys will be pressed by the bag itself.
It comes in very handy as I take my keyboard to and from work everyday.

Good luck with the search for a bag/case!

What about military cases? They are really hard, complete water proof and drop proof, and really bad ass!! There are more models out there than keyboards!

That'd be sweet, walking into a starbucks and start punching "nuclear launch codes" in.

I was thinking of making a travel case for my model F, but I think it'd be huge, so I quit.

I wonder if a SSK can fit inside of one of those OTD EVA cases.

Actually, there are special auctions for surplus equipment of the army. Lots of 50 cases WITH computers inside, starting at 25 USD. BUT they do not ship and the final user needs to be a US citizen. Outside of that, seems that we could  get a full lot of something useful for keyboards and split the cost of picking them up.

Military case ... hmmm, I might scout around in disposals here to see if I can find something that might suit my Model M.

Thanks for the idea!

That's the best you can do. Since surplus stores have boxes of all sizes and all conditions. Please let us know if you find something interesting.

I was thinking more of a bag as I have a fairly long walk to and from the station.  Something to augment my backpack.

Oh, there are even more options for bags than hard cases.
