Update: Leftovers available
http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=44841.msg932106#msg932106
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
These keys are an alternative to the traditional homing bumps/nubs found on the F/J keys on most keyboards. Instead of a raised part, these keycaps are instead with a deeper center. If you can't quite picture what I am saying, click here (http://i.imgur.com/TktqAjs.jpg). This picture was posted by Matt3o in the DSA Retro group buy thread and is purely here to illustrate the difference between DSA deep dish and normal DSA keycaps.
The main target for this group buy is recent ErgoDox buyers that also purchased the Massdrop DSA keyset. That keyset comes without any home-row indicators, so we hope to remedy that with this group buy.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This is going to be a small and quick group buy. Please PM me with how many keys you want, the address you want them shipped to, and your paypal email. I will send the invoices no later than midnight on Wednesday, April 24th. The invoices must be paid by midnight on Thursday, April 25th because I wish to put in the order to SP on Friday. I realize this is a very short period of time to order and then pay. I apologize if this causes an inconvenience, but the people in this group buy (myself included) want to get this over with as soon as possible. This means that you must be sure to include all of your information with the PM and be ready to pay by Thursday. Mark your calendars!
Price breaks:
<25 keys $6.00 each
25 keys $2.75 each
50 keys $1.75 each
100 keys $1.25 each
150 keys $1.00 each
200 keys $0.80 each
300 keys $0.75 each <------------- we are here
500 keys $0.65 each
Shipping:
The price of shipping will depend on the expected weight of the package and how far away you are from me (Texas). This will be calculated on a case-by-case basis.
In my haste of doing this group buy I haven't really done a good job of planning ahead for shipping costs. For that I apologize.
In the mean time I am trying to get everything calculated so that I can charge the correct amount with shipping. For most orders (<=55 keycaps), this will mean a shipping cost of $10 (US) and $15 (international) via USPS.
-
I'm up for 12 no matter what.
If it either
a) gets to be to where they are 1.25/1 each
or
b) my order of up to five more will push it over a price break
I'll be in for a few more.
-
Given the posts in the interest check and the ErgoDox DIY thread, I think 50 will be reached easily. It may be a stretch to 100 though. We'll see.
-
Count me in for at least 8, possibly up to 12 depending on final price.
-
brtaylor92,
Please PM me with the information (amount of caps, address, and paypal email) so that I can keep everything in one place. You can also change your order anytime by sending me another PM.
-
Jagriff,
Count me in for 16pcs confirmed.
I will pm you my detail around 24 Apr 2013
-
Given the number of keys that I'll end up wanting, and the number of people that I expect will want these keys in one form or another eventually, I propose a slightly different take. I want to take the price break to the $0.76/key level that was at 200 keys. This was the best price that we could reasonably hope to hit. (250 was a small drop, and 500 is really pushing it.) Whether that means I pitch in the difference to reach that level and become the handler for the remainder of the keys, or simply take over the buy in general I don't really care.
Edit: It appears the price breaks are different this time than the first quote you got. $0.80 now instead of $0.76
-
Just submitted my order.
Thanks again for running this and congrats on your first group buy! :D
-
DSA Blank PBT is very tempting! But too expensive :(
I'd order if a TKL (87 keys) set would go for about $60.
-
Since there are already a lot of orders, I went ahead and added a few more price breaks for the high end to the OP.
@Zalusithix:
I would say just to place your order now of the number of keys that you want. Then on Wednesday, if you still want to, PM me again to add however many extra keys are needed to reach whatever break you choose.

Thank you very much :)
DSA Blank PBT is very tempting! But too expensive :(
I'd order if a TKL (87 keys) set would go for about $60.
This is just for 1x1 deep dish keys, so you'd only want 72 keys. It would be less than $60 before shipping to get 72 keys if we hit the 200 key mark.
-
As for white keys, would it have a separate price break? (I think so, but just confirming)
-
Non-black keys would have a different set of price breaks, yeah. That's why we decided to do only black keys for this buy. There may be a future buy for different colors depending on how successful this is.
-
Ok. I'll be following the price break until next week. Expanding the deadline is not a possibility? With more time maybe you get more orders?

These are deep dish, usually used for home row or keys like ESC. You could in theory replace every letter, but it's more to compliment a full DSA set.
-
Thank you for doing the leg work Jagriff. Much appreciated!!! I Buy 8 keys.
-
oh, I should have read more carefully. I thought they were a lower profile DSA, and I'm looking for a set of low profile keycaps. I guess I will just wait for the eSports keycaps! Thanks for the info.
-
I thought DSA were fairly low profile as it is?

They are. http://keycapsdirect.com/key-caps.php (http://keycapsdirect.com/key-caps.php)
-
I don't know if a full set of deep dish DSA would be weird to type on. Definetly a full set of normal DSA would be worth trying imo. Especially when it's blank PBT!
-
Count me in for 8 or so...
What part of texas are you from? I'm out of the San Antonio area...
-
Please submit the order via PM.
I'm near SA :)
-
I would be happy to buy two blank deep dish 1x1 keys.
How much would shipping to Poland cost?

I'm still waiting to hear back from SP on shipping costs. I'll update the OP with more detailed shipping information before Wednesday.

Cool, I'd be interested in coloured ones.

You got PM regarding my concern on shipping fee on Non-US order. US30 is just too much for me. Are there any cheaper alternative?
-
heh, I was thinking much the same. I'd expect a jiffy bag from the US to the UK with 16 keys in it to come in more around that $10 cost shown for stateside orders. the OP does state that these are maximums though, so hopefully the real costs will come in plenty lower.
-
in other news - Jagriff, are you going to cross post this to the deskthority marketplace http://deskthority.net/marketplace-f11/ (http://deskthority.net/marketplace-f11/) i'd guess that a lot of people check both sites, but it might help get a few more orders in, and may be the difference between hitting a lower price break. which is nice.
-
For US shipping, you might just save yourself the time/hassle and go with flat rate padded envelopes or small boxes. Those are < $6 each to ship and come with free shipping supplies.
-
The shipping estimates listed in the OP are over approximations. International shipping will be closer to $15. $10 is about right for shipping within the US.
I will start sending out invoices tonight and tomorrow.
-
I'm still definitely in for 6, I just don't have an address for you to send them to yet :(
-
In for 4+ if you can do super cheap parcel post shipping around $2-3. I just need to do F and J for my ErgoDox and a couple spares.
-
Put me down for 40. PM sent.

nooooo, you need to do asdf and jkl; for your ergodox. treat your fingers, they'll love it ;)

are you making an entire board out of these? are others planning on doing this?

I got a TG3 BL-82, which has key caps that are all the same profile. I figure I can replace the alphanumeric keys with the blanks, leave the weird modifiers as-is. Since most of the modifiers are 1x, the deep-dish caps will help me touch-type on the "regular" keys.
Also, there are no F or J indicators at all on the TG3, so finding home row without looking is a matter of trial and error.

Paid.

Paid also.

Zaluthisix posted on the previous page that he might buy extras and re-sell them. Don't know if this actually happened, but if it did I expect you could get some from him.

You should still be able to get in - the OP is updated to say orders will be accepted until Friday.
-
woah. international shipping is quite costly. I was originally going for 2 only. now that the keycaps are 0.75, i should increase my order.
how much keycaps are u guys getting? what keys are u guys replacing?
-
i've said it before, and i'll say it again. you really want each home key to be dishy, so that's 8 per keyboard, just having 2 homing bumps isn't nearly as nice.
on my kinesis i also find that i sometimes hit the bottom row instead of the zxcv lot, so i'm going to set them up as deep dishes too, although i'm hoping that with the flat layout that won't be as much of a problem as the curved kinesis board.

home key? u mean asdf? or home, end, page up? cuz i dont use those.

yup. not the full home row, but the 8 keys that your fingers rest on as the home. so asdf and whatnot for a qwerty layout, arst neio in my case using colemak. it lets all your fingers snuggle in nicely when they're at rest between keystrokes :)

That was based on a much lower projection of order quantity. Once the count soared past the 200 mark, I was no longer concerned with getting the funding to the next price break by myself.
Suffice to say, this has been a lot more popular than any of us had initially thought it would be. It bodes well for the color version group buys though! I think those buys should be started soon after this one completes, but given a longer run for orders (a month perhaps?).

Thanks again Jagriff! :D

I sent a PM but got no response or invoice, just wanted to follow up.

Same here. I have been very surprised (and a little overwhelmed to be honest) with the response that this buy has received. Colored DSA Deep Dish keycaps sounds great to me.

Oops, sorry about that. Check PMs.

Update:
The order has been placed so now there is little to do but wait. I will hopefully have some info in about 4 weeks. In the meantime I thank everyone who has participated.
-
any updates?
-
Nope. I'm yet to hear back from SP. I will post here as soon as I get anything from them.
-
I just got the keycaps in the mail! See the updated OP.
-
Sweet. They'll arrive before my ErgoDox. And my whites. And my custom case.
Building boards takes a lot of waiting.
-
Tell me about it. The wait on the ErgoDox alone is driving me mad.
-
It's worth the wait though guys, they're lovely when you get em :) and should be even lovelier once my fingers can feel if they're on the home row or not.
-
Any extras? I'll take up to 40 in multiples of 8, ha.
-

where do i see the update? or is the update just shipping?

It's too late to join the group buy; however, there will be some leftovers. After the group buy is over and everyone has their keycaps, I will make a thread in the classifieds for those wanting to buy keycaps.

Hot. Aside from spamming F5 until I see it, is there a good way to keep on top of that thread?

Caps just arrived... Kind of caught me off guard as I haven't been following this thread closely and I expected them to take longer. Not that I'm complaining or anything! :D
-
cool :) pics of em installed would be nice for those of us who are going to have to wait for the international post to arrive! my fingers are really looking forward to getting em.
-
Got my caps today as well. Pretty spiffy! Pics once I have them on a keyboard.
-
Got mine, they're quite nice.

Some quick pics taken before the last of the daylight fades. A few of the caps on the board, and a couple comparing the DSA / DSA Deep Dish / Kinesis Deep Dish.
Quick impressions:
1) Shorter than I was expecting. The Kinesis ones are more pronounced and your fingers can feel the ledge when they pass over them. These ones blend in with the DSA set in that regard. The feel *is* different due to the sculpt, but not quite as pronounced as having the Kinesis ones on there.
2) Smoother texture than the DSA set. The DSA set has some grit to it, but the texture on the deep dish version is much finer. I find this difference almost as big of a tell that you're fingers are on them as the shape itself
[attach=1][attach=2][attach=3][attach=4][attach=5].

I wonder if you can sandblast them a little or something to give a rougher feel?
-
Cheers for the pics guys :)

I was also surprised that these keys were as short as they are, and the dished tops are really not as deep as I'd expected. I'm typing on them now, and they do have a nice feel to them, sort of like a smoother PBT. Doing a semi-otaku set on a TG3 keyboard, I'll try them for a while to see how I like them.
Thanks for the really rapid turn-around on the order! I think this is the fastest group buy I've ever been part of!
-
Someone mentioned in weeks past that you can use earring loops around the stems on your switches to shim up the height on short caps--I think that might be a pretty decent idea in this case.
-
which keycap do you prefer?
Assuming you meant comparing like to like (deep dish to deep dish), I'd say I prefer the Kinesis. However, I've had my fingers on them for years now, so I'm not exactly coming into this unbiased. If you had never used either, I'd imagine the decision would be a toss up as they're really not that different. The picture is rather deceiving, and I should have mentioned that the Kinesis versions have the bottom part of the key (the skirt so to speak) extending beyond the end of the stem, thus making them taller when laid on a table like that. The real difference when on the keyboard is more like splitting the difference between the two that you see when on the table. Just by eyeballing it, I'd say it's about a millimeter or less when on the board. Well within the realm of modding if it was something you wanted to change.
I wonder if you can sandblast them a little or something to give a rougher feel?
I don't think you'd want to make them rougher. The whole point is to have keys that feel different by touch. The texture difference in this case is advantageous, not detrimental. Sure they look slightly different, but even the color itself is a bit different, so you'll never have a perfect match with this batch no matter what you do. If anything though, it highlights the benefit of going to a completely different color for them. With a different color, you don't have to deal with minor shade differences that occur from batch to batch.
All that said, I'm kind of curious as to who is supplying Kinesis with their version of the deep dish. It's obviously not SP, unless SP has yet another key type hidden somewhere.
-
Since the keys are DSA profile, they will naturally be shorter than normal keycaps.
I am a little surprised at the color difference between this set and those that come with the ErgoDox on Massdrop. Is it more pronounced due to the camera or is it just as noticeable in person?
-
The photos were taken in natural light, so it's pretty much as the pics show. The deep dish are visibly a lighter shade in both natural and artificial light. Not a big deal for me, but it might drive people who are picky about those things nuts. ;)
-
Got mine yesterday. Thanks!
-
Is there anyone willing to sell twelve of these to me?
I got my package of twelve in the mail. Then i lost it a day later.
Any help will be appreciated.
(I was tired when I got the package so I don't remember where I put them. It sucks!)
Thanks.
-
woohoo. my deep dishes turned up today :) looking forward to getting home and sticking em on my dox now. i'm particularly pleased as they feel grippier than the basic keys :))
-
Got my key caps today.
Customs couldn't resist temptation to peek into envelope, but fortunately they managed to refrain from damaging anything.
-
I just got mine today, and I'm testing them right now. They feel great.
Thank you for organize it.
-
I got mine today too. Thanks for organizing.
-
Got mine up in the Great White North (the GTA).
-
My keys have arrived.
Thank you Jagriff.

I think it is time that we marked this down as a successful group buy. Please see to PM'ing me if you have any comments/questions about your order.
Thanks!
Oh, and I still have some leftovers. You can buy them here:
