Title: What's you laptop?
Post by: tipo33 on Sat, 20 April 2013, 23:43:07
I love my desktops, but I can't be around them all the time, so I have assembled some laptops that meet my standards of what a computer should be.

My main laptop is a 15" IBM thinkpad T60 with a T61 mobo, 15" UXGA "Flexview" IPS display, T8100 CPU, intel graphics, middleton BIOS, Atheros AR9300, Intel X25 SSD, I have a WD Scorpio Black 320G in a caddy instead of an optical drive, and a ALPS ISO keyboard.  It runs Kali linux.  I LOVE this laptop, It is plenty powerfull for what I need to do.  The screen is like nothing else they put into laptops these days, and the keyboard is the best laptop keyboard around.  It is no match for a mechanical, but it is damn good.

My backup laptop is a "TR451" A Thinkpad T41 with a R51 motherboard, 14" XGA screen, and also a ALPS ISO keyboard.  It runs Debian.  I use this when I am working/repairing/modding my main laptop.

I have a Thinkpad X41 tablet with AndroidX86, as my "in bed computer"

I also have a Thinkpad A31p lying around, and a Toughbook CF-29 project laptop.

What do you guys use on the move?

I have an alienware m11x R1. The only reason I got it is because it was on clearance for like $500 and it got up to 8 hours of battery life which was perfect for me since I needed something that would last that long for school. With a whooping 1.3ghz dual core ULV cpu (oc'd to 1.6), a 335m, 4gb ram, and 128gb m4. The gpu cranks out decent frame rates on skyrim, diablo 3, and other lite games.

I'm very happy for what I paid for it, but it could honestly use a bigger display, 11'' is too small for a laptop.

Some Asus piece of crap that overheats if I don't keep it on freaking ice cubes at all times. A 'gaming' laptop that you can't game on, desktop all the way.

I've been using a 17" MacBook Pro since 2007 about. Video card seems to be baked a little. Used to play WoW with it, now it has issues playing YouTube full screen.
But it works great for everything else still.

Samsung Chronos Series 7 17.3" 1080p (decent for a TN Panel), 3615QM CPU, 12GB DDR3, GT 650m (2gb DDR5)/HD4000 graphics, Plextor M5 Pro Extreme 256GB SSD + Plextor M3 256GB SSD. I keep static data on a server/NAS.
It's less than an inch thick, weighs 6.25 lbs., I get ~7 hours with the Battery Life Extender (sets the full charge at 80%), and I only paid ~$700 for it.

I have owned Macbook Pros before (My partner currently has my last one), but it's nice owning something that's specced higher and costs quite a bit less. I don't know anyone other than Samsung who makes a slim, semi-powerful notebook for half the cost of a MBP.

I use a ChromeBook at school with Ubuntu thrown on it. It's technically the school's so I can't take it home, but the IT office claimed it as a tinker machine since the screen cracked.

I'm using an 11" MacBook Air when I'm away from the iMac. It's the first gen 11" MacBook Air and it's time for an upgrade. I'm planning on getting the next version of the 13" retina MacBook Pro when it comes out.

Bought in October 2008 and still working, Dell Latitude E6400, with upgraded CPU P9500, 4GB DDR2 PC-6400 (that's the weak part), 14.1" (best size ever) 1440x900, Scorpio Black 320GB instead of the original 160GB. Unfortunately, it shows its limits, not enough RAM to run more than 2 virtual machines, and there is some heat issue that can be fixed, and DDR2 is rare and expensive. And as I always wanted to, I want to get back to Lenovo.

My first laptop was an T40, so it set standards quite high. Unfortunately, its GPU eventually died, even though I tried to repair it few times. Switched to latitudes (D400, D410, D630, D830) then, because they were slightly cheaper, but still solid. My only _new_ laptop has been Lenovo ThinkPad Edge 11 (bought without OS; pure Intel, so GNU/Linux it ran flawlessly), and while it wasn't really bad (trackpoint, awesome form factor, good battery life, warranty), I got rid of it last year to get the laptop of my dreams.

I'm back on a thinkpad—X200T (#7450-AK4) this time. Feels great, runs Linux Mint out of the box... Although I'll have to replace some parts (worn-out UK keyboard, dying 9cell battery, possibly HDD) soon, there's no reason for me to upgrade until they produce something similar with reasonable resolution.

Samsung Series 9 13".

I love my desktop, but I have this notebook because its extremely portable. It's the thinnest and second lightest notebook. Has PLS screen (IPS equivalent), and high pixel density (1600x900 res). It came stock with a samsung SSD. Very little heat, fan nearly inaudiable, and battery last the whole day. Powerful and snappy enough for on-the-go stuff and remote access to all my computers, but emphasis is on portability and elegance. For things that need horsepower like rendering, video editing, crunching, I use my desktop.

IMO, anything that's 11" or smaller is too small to be productive, and anything larger than 14" is too bulky to be portable.

I have the ARM Chromebook running ChromeOS and Ubuntu (awesomewm) with Crouton.
I hope the actual Ubuntu or Debian distribution gets proper graphics support. I really want to move over to a non ChromeOS install even though it's pretty good.

It can do anything the most potent desktop can do without the desk. Most Win PC user's are amazed how capable and fast a MacBook Pro can be.

Dell Precision M4600

It's decent, was a great value (bought refurb'ed for cheap, still came with a 3 year warranty), but huge and heavy for what it is.  The keyboard is actually pretty good for a laptop (although not as good as a my previous thinkpad), I'm sure the layout would drive some people nuts, but I don't mind it (the modifiers have odd sizing, but the arrow pad/page up/page down are in a decent location and I appreciate having a numpad for work).  The firepro M5950 graphics are fast enough to run most games at playable framerates, processor is a i5-2520m, 4gb ram, SSD installed aftermarket, decent 1080P TN panel (good contrast, saturates sRGB).  Having a ton of ports is pretty great (VGA/HDMI/DP, 2 USB 3.0, 2 USB 2.0, e-SATA/usb combo, SD, etc).  The biggest detractor is probably the lack of switchable graphics - the laptop has a huge battery, but I'd be lucky to get more than 4 hours out of it unplugged.

I have two laptops.

The first (now only used for travel) is a Fujitsu lifebook T4220 convertible tablet that I got for classes.
The second (which is being used now) is a Fujitse Lifebook T5010 convertible tablet that I got for $100 from work recently. I have the display flipped around, and the laptop is in it's side next to a monitor.

Having repaired and taken apart many (many) laptops, I really like how easy the Fujitsu ones are to repair. They have their quirks and issues, but their main problem is that they're more fragile than some other brands. I've never had an issue though (and i don't even try to be careful).

I have 3-4 more T4220's that are broken for spares. I plan to get some more T5010/T900 (the two are very similar, and share a lot of parts) spares as well.

As far as displays: pretty much all flat displays I've seen are trumped by a CRT @85Hz or higher.

I have an Acer 5534 that is good enough for the infrequent use it gets.

Dual boot Windows 7 and Ubuntu 12.04. My only real complaint is that the touchpad buttons just suck royally. Way too stiff and gritty.

Desktop computing is what is important to me, a laptop is a toy. Except when I travel, then it is a temporary lifesaver.

I use a pink Lenovo S10 netbook for work. It's small, lightweight, has an Express port and 500gig drive, making it great for on-site drive imaging. I got it for a song and few people want to steal a pink laptop. Also easy to spot on a table so I'm less likely to forget it.

My primary is a Sony SZ750. One of their really nice 13in carbon fiber laptops from a few years ago. It's one of the later Core2 Duos so it runs well, especially with the 4gigs and SSD. It's been relegated to bedtime use and travel now that I have the S10.  While durable, I can replace the entire S10 for the cost of just about any major component in this.

Both run Win7 and Ubuntu.

I also have:
Fujitsu Stylebook tablet (12in) running Ubuntu (9) and Photoshop CS4. it is Wacome Penabled, making it a poor man's graphics tablet. $140 vs $3500.
Lenovo X100 netbook (2gigs ram, 250gig drive. I use this for testing stuff.
Gateway M series (14in, c2d,4gigs) for watching movies. Dual boots Ubuntu and Win7
A few other, older 13in Sonys.

A two year old Samsung netbook, bought in a hurry, selected because its keyboard and touchpad sucked less than on the others in the store. Runs Ubuntu 11.04. I use it only to serf the web when I am travelling. I'm thinking of maybe replacing it with a tablet or Chromebook, but I need an OS and a user interface that does not suck.
If a Chromebook with Ubuntu had been available at the time, I would have bought it in a heartbeat.

Years ago, I used to have a Thinkpad T61 at work, and I loved the thing. Good keyboard, good 16:10 screen, good performance at the time. I was working at a crazy startup at the time, waiting for the company I worked for to go bust, hoping to be able to buy the laptop at a discount, but it got stolen in a break-in and I got a HP as replacement only because my boss thought that it could be delivered sooner than a new Thinkpad ...

Lenovo.
While Dell sells systems with it, I really hate to buy a Dell. I would rather buy an older Lenovo and refurbish it than almost anything Dell offers.

On the other hand, both Lenovo netbooks I have, run Linux great (flawless actually), and will even run Mac. Same for the older Thinkpads, they run great. It's not so much that Lenovo works for it, it's that they tend to use common components, and corporations buy Thinkpads by the truckload, meaning lots of high level geeks are writing drivers for them in their spare time.

I have no experience running Linux on an Asus, but they have good stuff for the money.  Sony and Toshiba can be good, but hit or miss in terms of drivers (Sony can be terrible for power). Apple can work, but you will pay for it. HP/Compaq/Gatewaye etc... I wouldn't even consider due to their reliability unless it's really high end.

As mention, whatever it is, make sure it's Intel.

It's cool that your super aggro on people having different use-cases than you for what they want a PC to do, but to cry about it as much as you have and to label them as 'mac***s' is so pathetic it verges on hilarious. Hence my use not only of 'pc***' but also 'always never'. Though, you really do come off as someone that's really bitter about not being able to afford one of there machines.

it was implied

there is zero reason to own a mac computer.

I'm just going to say this, because we're already on page 3, and no one has said it yet: What's youR laptop?

not sure i follow. i use an old acer pentium dual core, going to upgrade to an x200/t61p thinkpad and run debian on it. I dont need much power on the go.

It's cool that your super aggro on people having different use-cases than you for what they want a PC to do, but to cry about it as much as you have and to label them as 'mac***s' is so pathetic it verges on hilarious. Hence my use not only of 'pc***' but also 'always never'. Though, you really do come off as someone that's really bitter about not being able to afford one of there machines.

there really isnt....

the only reason which might mean you have to use their OS is because your clients use their OS...and they dont have to use their OS because there is no actual reason to
even if you are forced into it...just hackintosh

Windows/Linux is superior in every single way.

- Hardware is a pain to upgrade and usually invalidates warranty - FACT
- Apple branded upgrades are massively overpriced - FACT
- Apple Desktops and most of their laptops are massively overpriced - FACT
- Apple portable devices are also overpriced and are often re released year after year with next to no changes - FACT

see where im going with this?

- Apple stifles the innovation of other companies and likes to play patent wars...and have never actually innovated or invented anything in at least the last 10 years - FACT
- Apple uses less than err moral ways to build its products *cough foxconn* - fact (other companies do this as well)
- Apple uses guerrilla marketing tactics to sell their products by misleading buzzwords MAGGGGICAL...INNOVATION...BEAUTIFUL - FACT

I've got an assortment, I like keeping my old ones to use as low power single job servers.

The lowest spec laptop I have (in use) is a Dell with a screen flipped inside out.  I originally intended it to be a home brew picture frame computer but that plan failed.  Specs:
It may sound like a nightmare, but it runs a slimmed down version of Windows XP SP3 like a CHAMP.  Surprisingly it doesn't run Linux well at all.  The hardware isn't well supported (even with Ubuntu or Linux Mint), and I've tried multiple times.  Slimmed down XP SP3 works amazing on this laptop.  I'm very attached to this machine for having kept it working for so long.

My main laptop (and main computer) is a Dell XPS 15z.  Specs:
I tried Windows 8 with it but hated the UI.  Its too bad honestly, because for a Windows OS its crazy fast.

My original college laptop was a Thinkpad T61

My next laptop will be a desktop replacement.  I'm dying to get a Macbook Pro, 15 inch, 16gb ram, 512gb solid state, retina display, yeaaaaaaa.  I'm technically competent which means I have the right to own and use one.  I won't argue with anyone about this  :D.  All three major oses in my household, each with their own advantages (and disadvantages).

I'm going to convert my Dell 15z into a VM server.

And off topic, but still relevant, my desktop is a home made:
I use it for mainframe R&D.  It runs Ubuntu server w/ an LDXE environment, its running a z/OS 1.10 virtual machine that eats up about 90% of the resources.

Sony Vaio S13P
* i7-3520m
* 8GB RAM
* 256GB Samsung 830 SSD
* Nvidia GT640M LE @900mhz
* 1,55 Kg

It's light, it's fast and lasts quite long on the normal + sheet battery. Ideal laptop for schoolwork for me.

As much as I don't like Apple as a company, I'll briefly defend their products because there's one thing people seem to have missed;
Ease of use, a lot of the problems people have with Apple products are problems who only concern those who are tech geeks, not everyone cares about being able to build and upgrade their computer, some people just want something that works, and people pay for convenience, this is part of the reason why F2P games make money.
Also design, even if it's not to your taste there has been much more effort and thought put into the design and materials used in Apple products than a lot of their competitors.

We do not have unlimited time, and we can't nerd every single thing we use.

Apple support is also more convenient than others, since there are Apple dealers where you can get help for your specific product. If you buy a HP product from some random electronics store you often can't expect the store to help you much unless your product is faulty, and if you want to get in touch with something like HP or Dell support you have to jump through hoops only to get some textbook reply.
Sure, they might not be able help with the things computer nerds might want help with, but I'm fairly confident they can help with any problem my parents would have with a mac if they had one.

So yeah, personally I don't like Apple as a company and I don't really care much for their products, but they have their place in the market.

As for my laptop, I have a 15" Alienware laptop, and while a lof of **** can be said about it(Dell sucks btw), it's worked great for me so far, and at the time I bought it there wasn't a lot of competition in that price range, so it was a fairly ok deal.

Still not into it tho, i would never buy one.

The point is some people here have macs because they love it or use macs for work. This aint mac vs pc thread.

Empathy. Some people lack it.

Most people on this board are geeks who know their way around computers. It's presumptuous to think that one would know better than them what computer would suit their needs better. It's obnoxious to brand them stupid for simply owing a different brand of product.

Someone buys a Mac. Big whoop. If that bothers you, then you are the one who has a problem.

Actually that argument started before both even hit store shelves.

It only intensified when schools signed deals with Apple, while almost all businesses were using everything but. It only slowed when Apple just about went under.

I guess, I don't really know much about that period as I didn't know much about it back then, I just remember those ad's bringing at least alot of new people into that argument and people who had no real right to an opinion started acting as if they knew anything about how computers worked etc... that was tiresome
