I soooo want this headphone, but...
Nice Find!

Love my AD-700s a lot, wish I could upgrade but.....
-
I have the open ATH-AD900's and have owned them since about 2008. They are excellent headphones, but they don't fit everyone. I especially like the wide soundstage (particularly good for movies and gaming) and clear instrument separation. Highly recommended, especially at this price (I paid $300 imported from japan, 'cause they weren't available here in the US at the time)
The "X" (per A-T's product naming scheme) means it's an updated version of the (now discontinued) ATH-AD900 and ATH-A900. I have read they have better bass (the earlier models had somewhat less bass than what some people seem to prefer. Perfect for me, though.) The "D" means it's open.
My ATH-AD900's are very light, and are constructed of metal and plastic. The metal is very light: likely either aluminium or magnesium. I find them very comfortable, and have worn them for more than 16 hours at a time.
Since I sort-of want a decent closed headphone, I might try the A-900X, but I'm afraid the bass will be too high for me (and I'll have to EQ it down a little)
---
Also, these are low impedance / high sensitivity headphones. External amplification is not required (but I always recommned a butter (gain=1) output stage on a DAC).

wow I've been looking at the open air ones for a few weeks
took this as a sign to finally get them. code worked fine
I've been wasting my money on so much stuff lately, but i really feel these headphones were a good investment. i hope i am right about that.

How much better are these than M50s?
-
Well, send me a pair and I'll check for you. :P

How much better are these than M50s?
I don't have that much experience with the M50s, but they are completely different headphones. Not sure about the closed a900x's comparison to the m50s though.

Forgot to mention that I hopped on this deal! Upgrading from m50's
$129.95 shipped for the open air.
Thanks

Hey dorkvader, do these cans fit over your ears without contact or on them?

These are over-ear (not on-ear) headphones. Some people report the driver touching their ears, but that is not the case for me.
They are huge, so they actually easily fit over my ears with room to move them around a little (quite a bit in my case)

Thanks vader!

I'm loving these headphones, thanks a lot! I got them a few days ago.

Yeah! Me too. You go open or closed? I got the open ones and they're awesome.
I still want a pair of K701s, but these AD900s are making it hard to pull the trigger on those.

In terms of SQ, these will be much better than the M50s. The 900s will have a much bigger soundstage, detail retrieval, imaging, etc but will have less bass than the m50s. They will also be more comfortable for most people, unless its too big to fit on their heads. The m50's do have a "fun" sound signature that people prefer though.
Go closed if you need some isolation and a bit more bass, otherwise go open.

She needs her own pair then xD

I went open, because my last pair was closed.
I agree the m50's are a "fun" sound that works well with all types of music and games.
The 900's sound very clean and crisp, and fit my big head way better :))
I mostly listen to hardcore/pop punk.
