Title: LED's For Poker
Post by: mashby on Sun, 28 April 2013, 21:58:03
I need input on what kind of LEDs I need for the two Pokers I'm currently building. I'm looking for a set of 7 red LEDs and a set of 7 white.

I still very much a newb and not at all electrically inclined and I haven't a clue where to start.

Tonight, I just finished building up my first Poker. I bought the PCB via iMav's Last Sale (http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=40535.0), but it didn't come with LEDs. Now that I successfully built up the board, I figured I should add the LEDs for the 7 locations where the LEDs have traces.

If anyone could help point me in the right direction, I'd be most appreciated.

Almost any 3mm or T1 LEDs will work. Different color require different voltages, but generally all these LEDs have a good enough tolerance to work fine on the same resistor. If it's really out of spec, then it'll be too dim or too bright (maybe even burn out), but usually this is not the case. And even if it is, LEDs are cheap enough where you can just replace them no problem (cost-wise).

WFD -- thank you for  shedding some light on this for me.

Don't even know where to begin to purchase them, but I found two on SuperBrightLED.com in Red LED (http://www.superbrightleds.com/moreinfo/through-hole/red-3mm-led-30-degree-viewing-angle-5000-mcd/310/1242/) and White LED (http://www.superbrightleds.com/moreinfo/through-hole/white-3mm-led-30-degree-viewing-angle-3000-mcd/304/1236/).

Does this look proper? Also, if anyone  has an suggestions on other US Vendors, please let share.  ;D

eBay option is always the cheapest.

http://ledcalc.com/

for resistor calculations. electrodroid for android also is a nice app for (but not exclusively) that purpose.

while we're at it, can anyone tell me what screws are used to secure poker pcb in the case? i can't measure them myself right now, quick reply would be very welcome.

Mouser or digikey has the widest selections if you want to choose based on specs. They're around 10 - 25 cents each. Ebay is the cheapest but you'll be choosing base on color instead of brightness, voltage, current, etc.

M2 size, SMS type I believe.

Anyone have any reservations these LEDs on eBay (http://www.ebay.com/itm/70-Red-Green-Blue-Yellow-Purple-Pink-White-3mm-Mixed-LED-Light-90-Free-Resistor-/110869179771?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item19d0516d7b) ?

Given that they are coming from China I'm planning on ordering someLEDs from Lighthouse LEDs (http://lighthouseleds.com/3mm-led-white-ultra-bright-13-000-mcd.html) for the project that I'm currently working on and would love input on this choice as well.

Sorry I'm needing so much assistance with this, but I'm still lernin'
