Title: [IC] QFR modded with jailhouse blues
Post by: khaangaaroo on Sun, 28 April 2013, 23:23:28
What are jailhouse blues? They're modified mx blues with the two-piece stem joined so that it operates as one piece.

Leslieann came up with several ways to do this, and coined the term "jailhouse blues"

I did the same thing using a different method
http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=40193.0

The end result is the same. You get something like mx browns but with a more pronounced bump closer to the top of key travel, and a muted bottoming out like having o-rings.

It's a pretty time consuming mod, but I think it's worth it. I'm looking to either sell the board or start a tour if enough people are interested but aren't sure if they'd like it enough to buy it. Thoughts?

If I was a Cherry user, I feel like this would have a possibility of being my favorite switch.

Light action, tactile but no annoying click, action high up, what more could you want?

Sorry, I don't have the money, or I would nab one of these for my collection.

I would too but me being in europe probably won't work that well so I will just read what you other guys say if this ever becomes a tour.

Hmm, I feel like this takes away from the Blues the best thing about them: CLICK. And on top of that, Blues are already near the lighter end of the spectrum of what I'm comfortable with, so to lighten them even further...

But, even then, I'd definitely be interested in trying them, for the experience. Who knows, right?

You can actually do a version of this mod that keeps the click. If the spacers are thinner so that there's play between the blue and white part of the stem, the downward snapping of the white part as it goes over the bump is what creates the click.

This mod actually makes the switches a little heavier. The spacers move the white part down, as well as compress the spring. So think of it as shifting the entire force diagram to the left, as though you already have the key depressed 1mm at all times. And because the white part moves as one piece with the blue, there is no separate reset point.

Diagram!

Ah, that's really nice to know! So a little heavier, shorter throw, and I can still get some click. I think I will actually try to give that a go. What thickness are you using on yours, so I know what a little thinner should be? NVM, I see your method. Not an exact number.

I tried measuring with a caliper, and cutting to that size. But the tolerance is so small, you wouldn't be able to get a consistent cut without using something like a laser cutter. So I just cut a bunch and used the ones that worked.

I've been meaning to go to the hardware store to find something with consistently the right thickness. Haven't gotten around to it.

Ok guys, looks like there's a good amount of interest in a tour. I started another thread to organize one: http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=43004
Post there and PM me your info if you want to participate.
