Title: Filco Neo Trackpad
Post by: Carefoot on Wed, 01 May 2013, 23:39:46
I got it in the mail and I watch comedy while laying in bed with it, ask questions.  It has a longer USB than the apple one (not that you couldn't extend it).  Much love.

I think it's been discontinued for a while now.

If by some chance you're on a Mac, get a Magic Trackpad. If you're on Windows 7 or 8, get the Logitech T650 (it feels lovely and solid). For other OSes, I don't really know...

It's probably not that hard to get both trackpads working on all operating systems, you might not find drivers from the manufacturer but I'm guessing there will be third party drivers, either generic or specifically made for them, that will make them work.

I recommend this trackpad its way better than the Magic Trackpad.  I can sell mine on trade if anyone wants it.

The apple magic trackpad works under Linux.
The logitech t650 only has basic functionality (you can move the mouse, scroll with 2 fingers, or left/right click by depressing the bottom corners) no tap to click or such - but I hope to fix this.

If it is so good why would you want to get rid of it? Or do you have many?

That's weird considering Filco keyboards usually have short USB cables; too bad that its not Plug and Play and requires drivers to function (I hope you never lose that CD).

What's better about it?

It's probably not that hard to get both trackpads working on all operating systems, you might not find drivers from the manufacturer but I'm guessing there will be third party drivers, either generic or specifically made for them, that will make them work.

I tried unsuccessfully to get a Magic Trackpad to work under Windows. Apple's Windows drivers (provided only as part of the Boot Camp driver set) provide only the most basic functionality.

Good to know!

In that case, my recommendation is:
For Mac or Linux: Magic Trackpad
For Win 8 or 7: Logi T650
For older Windows: fuhgeddaboudit! ;)

Filcos touchpad works for Mac, Windows and Linux.  Ubuntu obviously as well.

Honestly I only use it when I am pass out drunk watching comedy on my floor which is an activity I could probably stop doing.

Wow, you think its better than the apple one? Impressive

IMO Apple makes the best trackpad/firmware out of any laptop manufacturer.

How much did you get the Filco one for?

"Works" and "works well" are two entirely different things. (Remember, we're Mac users. We have extremely high expectations.) It's vanishingly unlikely that any gestures beyond moving the pointer and scrolling are supported on Mac (and likely Linux). For Windows it would have to have included a driver. And we know Filco doesn't do Mac.

Agreed. I have not used any trackpad that has even come close to being as good as Apple's. And given that a lot of non-Apple touch gear uses the same hardware under the hood (and that Apple's trackpads don't work anywhere near as well under Windows as under Mac, even with drivers installed), it is obvious that the driver quality is essential -- and that nobody else has gotten it right.

(I feel the same way about mice: it baffles me that Apple-style acceleration curves aren't used more widely in the computer industry.)
