Title: geekhack apparel
Post by: jwaz on Mon, 06 May 2013, 12:19:16
Lets make some sweet shirts/ hoodies!

Post up any ideas and maybe we can get a GB going.

My initial thoughts:

1. We should use a well made American shirt brand, it may be more expensive but with the recent disaster this point (at least as I see it) is an absolute must. Anyone know of anything we could get wholesale prices on? Maybe AmAppy but if there is a viable alternative I'm all for it.

2. I'd like to see some orange and gray on black designs, similar to the nostalgia theme (if you aren't using it you aren't doing it right)

I still want a GH t-shirt that says "Chicks Dig Loud Keyboards."

Eu members might be better off organizing a separate GB, but ideas are cool to chuck around here

maybe we can get a nice hoodie made by american apparel like the TL hoodies but with the color scheme you described.  I am quite a fan of the TL hoodies ^.^

I'd rep a GeekHack shirt/hoodie so hard. There was an IC (http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=39279.0) with some cool ideas but nothing seemed to ever come out of it. Then I was a sad panda.

I'd love to see a shirt similar to the Taylor Gang or Die shirts (http://cdn100.iofferphoto.com/img3/item/527/216/214/l_lCpXnew-taylor-gang-or-die-men-s-cotton-t-shirts.jpg). But it says "Keyboards or Die" on the front with GeekHack on the back. Preferably the logo from This picture (http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/05/05/esymuma4.jpg).

I would also love to see a shirt that has a picture of a switch top (think a top-down view of an MX switch) with the GH logo underneath on the front. And on the back it says "I'd Tap That".

Binge/Jwaz also floated the idea of having solid color hoodies with just the GH logo on the front or back similar to this (http://www.simplygreek.com/product_images/i/letterman_hoodie_pbs__56472.jpg) and this (http://cfile239.uf.daum.net/image/171CE6464F17D3FC21C4FD).

I still want a GH t-shirt that says "Chicks Dig Loud Keyboards."

And this but I want it to say "Wanna Switch?" on the back :P

HUGE logo across the chest in enormous letters GEEK HACK

or maybe G H with the oldschool logo on the back

i would get a shirt that was mainly Plain, with a two color scheme, with the Logo on the front, and then some funny phrase on the back.
i also like the idea of an mx switch somewhere on the shirt :D

I'm down to get fully fitted! Bring it on!

I need XXXL though for hoodies and jackets... Anything else can be 2XL

That would be so freaking epic, if we made GH shirts and Deskthority made their own shirts, then we all meet up at camp Pendleton, CA and have a paintball war!!

Before I forget, we should also remember that there are ladies on GH who might like to get one of these so the phrases might need to be good for both genders :D

If this goes through with shirts/hoodies I can recommend a shop that is actually within 3 miles of my house.  Not only do they use American made shirts and hoodies but to my knowledge they are also a union shop.  Lets support the people that brought us the weekend in the first place.

Geekhack thongs, for sure.

Ok, fine, and speedos.

Did anyone ever make GH-themed wrist rests? I'm going to see if I can make 'em.

EDIT: If you really want to do something like t-shirts, you've got to do LOTS of them, and silk-screen them. The cheapest way to do that is to lower the setup costs by keeping it one-color. A black shirt with a bright orange GH logo would (in my opinion) exert the maximum win for the least amount of money. Plus, how to get these things out to people? Shipping just a single shirt, is... meh. Roll something else inside the shirt, and it would be awesome. Get a grab bag of stuff, toss in a few "rare, custom" keys, and then roll them up in the shirts. People buy a shirt and wish and pray that they get the t-shirt with the Clack inside, or the Hapster, etc.

thats not an issue

i thought there were more troubles with being able to use geekhack on things

if we have permission to make apparel i can have large runs made inside a week and shipped from me and will happily sell em at cost + a donation to geekhack

i can also knock out whatever designs people want or can use any artwork we currently have

Hm I thought if Jwaz started the topic then we had GH's blessing? Unsure though. And you might want to talk to Binge or find the hoodie thread to see logos and other ideas currently pitched as well as my links in the beginning of this discussion.

I have a few tshirts and a hoodie I had made a while back...I find it is a good idea to have the URL somewhere on the apparel.  If you are going to promote the community, tell people how to get here!

I want a dark charcoal hoodie with orange GH over the heart.  Geekhack.org across the back would be cool, too.

Garment made in the US is preferred, but for heaven's sake not American Apparel!  Their ads are just... creepy.

American Giant would be much better.

Suggestion: instead of polls figuring out which kind of hoodie, sweatshirt, beanie cap, or whatever we all want...

... Geekhack patches.

 :D

[attach=1]

Google up 'embroidered patches' and there are lots of manufacturers who can do this. Just off the top of google, I find this pricing scheme:
http://www.wholesale-patches.com/pricing.html (http://www.wholesale-patches.com/pricing.html)

According to this site (which may not even be our ultimate choice) a 4" diameter embroidered patch is somewhere between $1.43 and $1.75 each for a quantity of 200 -- price varies depending on the complexity of the design, and thread use. You could sell them for $3 and they would still be a steal, and the balance could go to GH. And it looks like the turnaround is pretty quick. So we could run this like a real groupbuy, make multiple designs available, and let people pick and choose, and the final price depends upon what tier(s) we hit. It cost $.10 to add 'iron on' capability to a patch, if no one knows someone who can sew.

The advantages here are price, options and you can add it to whatever clothing you already own. And the shipping costs would be way, way less.

I don't mean to piss in anyone's cereal -- these are all great ideas for apparel, but we all have different ideas of what constitutes clothing we would want to wear, so why not a patch? We could all post photos showing where we put our patches! Put 'em on hats, whatever. Just something to consider.

Just to add my two cents, I prefer themed apparel that is not so on-the-nose.  Something like the buckling spring cross section is awesome by itself or with an obscure quote, like "wanna switch".  The URL is a good idea as long as it doesn't dominate the design.

What about an exploded drawing of a model m? switch cross section is cool too

let's do the typewriter font on the back 'geekhack.org' and 'keyboard enthusiasts' under it on the right. positioned at the bottom of the shirt would be sleek

don't think we should be using the IBM logo unless it's on the model m label

I don't think you'll be able to produce t-shirts with IBM logos, but I could be wrong.

The closest I've ever found to the original Cherry font is VAG_Rounded. I've attached the font file to my post.

ok so im ordering the prototypes on friday

they will be grey american apparel tshirts with just the geekhack logo across the front, and a small little extra somewhere so that anyone who gets a prototype knows they got one of the first ones

if anyone wants an extra one they will be $15 shipped anywhere in the world

please send me a PM before friday if you want one

these are professionally screened shirts to the highest possible standard, the price on them is a little high for the first run to pay for screens and shipping etc, should we order 50+ next time ill be able to sell them for $10 shipped anywhere + a donation to geekhack

How much would it be to have the one keymaster has edited but without the text on the back? Ie just the BS switch cut away

it depends how many you would want, if you want them pro screened etc and there is a demand for 20 i can get em done at about 10 bucks each, if you want it less professional there are lots of options for a single shirt

Hmmm. I don't want to split an order up too much or decrease the MOQ but I bet at least 5 people would be interested in the design I mentioned

Give free ones for every set sold with the next RA group buy run?  ;D

Edit;
I saw the pics of the "keep calm and klaxon" ones - looks legit. Would wear.

Clearly, it sucks to be both of you.

Also, I don't think I can fund 175 shirts out of my own pocket, sorry :P

Keep Kalm and Klaxon

  • Phantom (text, on top), Phantom (logo, centered), [USER,DIY'ER] (text, bottom)
  • 1000 posts (2000, 3000, 4000, etc.)

What are some other ideas?

I'll make a small GH-themed banner that the patches can be sewn onto, LOL!

More category ideas:

- one for each kind of major switch you own? tried? (Cherry MX, ALPS, Topre, BS)
- Clack Owner
- Model SSK Club
- Rare, Custom

EDIT: the multi-quote is taking some getting used to, LOL!

Title: Re: geekhack apparel

I also would like to not see virtual badges. This is a community and I feel like I learned who does what through interacting with them. I feel like badges cheapens the experience of getting to talk to and meet people. And it may intimidate people or just devalue the forum into a way to collect some sort of virtual kudos. Instead of interacting, I feel that people may just try and 'catch em all, like reputation/respect/knowledge can be bought as easily as Pokemon cards.

If you want to show something off, why not make a Wiki User Page?

Maybe even badges for different types of switches would be nice too. I will probably post some up in the middle of next week. :]

Would you be willing to hold an interest check for badges? I think it looks like it deserves its own thread by now. We could also post designs there, just like the GH60 Sticker IC thread.
I don't mind making the IC thread myself, but I don't think I would be in a good position to host the groupbuy for it.

Edit: I think it should also have it's own IC since badges aren't technically included in the OP. xD

Should I continue making these?

Can you make one for MX Greens? Love the work you did! If I PM you, can you send me the AI files? Also, what font did you use for the "Blue" script text? I could see a green version of this on a green shirt.

I will try to make all of them in the same scheme, meaning create similar design for all switches :)

"Blue" uses "Lighthouse" font. Cherry uses "ClaremontRR" in Bold. Cherry switch was retraced by me and i am able to change their colours in a matter of seconds (same goes to text visible) :)

I will keep you informed on the state of making other switches :)

here the designs
Make the switch *****:
http://www.zazzle.co.uk/make_the_switch_*****_ibm_model_m_shirt_buckling-235965635997894793
and heres one for you politically correct people or whatever:
http://www.zazzle.co.uk/buckling_spring_t_shirt-235042733566588930

apparently the only way i could link is if i make commision which is 10% (price is still the same for you as if you had designed it yourself, zazzle absorbs the commission)
also if you do a google search you can often find discount codes
so buy from here or mock it up yourself, if you buy via those links i will donate the 10% (1.25GBP) to geekhack per sale, totally up to you.

edit - also you should be able to modify the designs i posted and still GH will get commision. could be worth looking into this with other sites?
