Yes, we should call it "GEEK" or something, instead of "Like"

I think it would be a great idea to add a button to +1 a post to show your support of the idea, instead of having people post a comment saying the same thing. Maybe it can even be an option that the poster can enable? Or maybe if someone posts, and I press it, the poster will get a notification saying "Someone wants to +1 this. Agree?". That way we don't get into voting like on FB, but it can be used for useful things.

On what section of the forum?

I only really see this working on the IC, but most of those have a google poll anyways

I'd would be good if it shows who has +1'd the post.

Does this mean you can downvote people enough so they can't post? :P

Then you have a list somewhere showing the most highly rated ("geeked") ideas?

The next GH statistic, directly under "Posts:", "GH+1" - The total amount of agreement or kudos to a user's posts.

The +1's and button for each individual post could be in the "« Reply #8 on: Mon, 06 May 2013, 14:51:57 +42 » [+1 button]" area as such without being obnoxious or making posts take up more space.

Ick. Facebook/Reddit rating systems. The mods like Soarer's gained their notoriety without such +1's etc. I'd prefer to not have them, but if they were instated I'd likely not use them. Seems like it could be used a "gang up" tactic also for recent events like the Rarar fiasco and everyone's(minus me) universal dislike for TP4Tissue.

Not really digging this. I just want a forum, if I wanted a facebook/reddit system, I'd go there and do that

I specifically didn't include a dislike option in my OP because I don't think there is a need for it.

Rep works fine on XDA, OCN, and other forums. I'm almost positive they were kidding about doing negatives :p

See :)

Edit - I don't know if rep is possible with SMF

I would love if this feature never happened. Sorry moose but I totally agree with The_Beast. If we wanted that I think we have other venues that support this feature.

Would people abuse the system and just +1 everything?

Not that we have any trolls around here.

Positive reinforcement is wonderful.

Rep? No
+1? No

Maybe limit people's karmic up/down voting to once per day? So it doesn't get out of control, and it can't be gamed.... much.

I assume this is in regards to recent major/minor changes to the forum? Why not just create a poll thread?
Title: Re: +1

Once per day? You think you will only find 1 good post a day?

Those who forget the past (or weren't here yet?) are condemned to repeat it.

There have been thread rating and rep systems employed on this site before. It never really translated into a feature that meant anything or was useful, as far as I could tell. It mainly ended up being abused as a trolling means. I think it comes down to the format of GH discussions and that discussion board threads don't lend themselves well to being rated.

I'll call it now: if it's implemented, its benefit will be less than worth the effort put forth to implement it, just as it was the last two times (if not more).

I agree with this. I have seen this very thing blow up and actually become more harm than good on otherwise reasonable forums. Besides, people generally have a good idea on here which members are doing well for the community. Not all the time, granted, but in general, it's not hard to pick out the good people here.

I have no preference if this feature gets implemented or not, but I don't see the need for it. Most people can gauge quality posts. For example, nearly all of tp4tissue's posts are useless, while leslieann's posts have a very high signal to noise ratio.

Just trying to think of maybe a way to limit certain posts. I'll just go on with my +1 posts then. Thanks!

Well...that is without question worse since it's a content-less bump post. Whatever happened to using words to respond to things?

A feature as proposed in the OP might be useful if we had some sort of featured mod/project 'news' page or ticker, hack of the month or something along those lines, and used the +1/like counter to determine who ends up the next one...I would say the feature should only apply to the Geekhack Projects category though (making stuff/diy, wiki)

using xda as a example with the thanks button would be cool.
it could be called something else but it would limit the amount of garbage in threads from people posting thanks/+1/etc

I've looked into this a couple of times.  As others have mentioned, ranking systems often degrade into trolling tools on most forums where I have seen this rolled-out.  However a positive-only system might help to stem that sort of thing.  One method I was playing around with allowed members to "like" or to "unlike" a post, but no way to "dislike".

That said, we do lack a topic rating system.  That is something I have been considering more seriously.  We had that in the old GH.
