Title: [IC] Dual stem location Caps key
Post by: Melvang on Wed, 08 May 2013, 21:23:58
This is just an Interest Check.  Looking to see who might be interested in a caps lock key with the ability to switch between center and offset stem simply buy pulling the stem out and reinserting into a different position on the cap.  Fair warning I do NOT have the CAD ability, resources, nor contacts to have this done.  What I do have however is a couple ideas on how this could work.  Just wondering if this would be something that people might be interested in.

One idea involves molding added bits into the cap and the other involves cutting the stem and gluing other stuff into the cap.

whats wrong with the current center stemmped stepped capslocks we have from SP? I'm using both beige and black on my cherry sets and they work just fine

because then you could get the reg cap and the stepped cap and be able to use both on a board with either center or offset switch.

I think this is a really cool idea. It opens up a few options for capslocks that we could use. Plus I like seeing new fresh ideas ^__^

i3oiler just bought a new mold for stepped center stemmed caps locks. Buying yet another mold is do-able but expensive, plus I'm not sure if it is possible given the space inside the cap.

I will see if i can get something drawn up tomorrow.  But like I said in the OP I suck with drawing up stuff on the comp so it will be drawn by hand and then scanned into the comp.  I think I can get my ideas conveyed well enough.

I worry that both stems couldn't coexist-- if you're using one, the other would foul against the switch casing.

Good point, sadly.

no no no its not 2 stems at the same time.  It is one stem that is removable and has 2 possible positions.

That sounds amazing, but I'd rather have a 1.25x Enter  :p

Melvang, like all good ideas, handsketches are more than fine. I often prefer them at work ^__^

OK I have an idea somewhat drawn up but being at work I do not have access to a computer to post the pic.  Will post it when I get home.  On the side of getting say SP to make it them self does anyone have an idea what it would cost to get the molds made?

Edit:  Just to clarify said caps will be sacrificed to the dremel gods.

Here is said idea.  Basically it would have 2 portions of a cherry MX stem in the cap.  One for each location, center and offset.  The stem would have the same opening on the top and bottom so as if you want to move it from a center mount to offset just pull the stem and replace in the other location.

I would be interested.

Thought this would be relevent.

Something like that would require a new mold, possibly 2 and would cost well over $7,000 for SP to do.

Filco, Rosewill, Cooler Master, Ducky, Cherry 8133/8200

Offset Stem:

Cherry 1800, 11900, 2500, 3000 series

and probably others.

I don't think that would be very stable. It would also be expensive. Better to have two different caps.
