Hey guys.
I'm about to order a Leopold Fc700R and I have already started to look for a 2nd board. This time with a num.
I stumbled upon this.
http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=23394
I love the colour scheme and the caps being PBT is a huge win.
What do you guys think?
-
Eww numpad...
Aside, a few of us were discuss this board on Whirlpool, its not bad.
-
I'm getting MX browns on the Leopold, so I would consider Red or Black. ;D

Haha, yeah I probably wouldn't use the NUM too much.
But I would like to have a keyboard with one.
Because.
Reasons.
Fun fact. My verification code is gaybtw
Could be a sign
-

Id probably get blacks, assuming you are gaming on them and typing on the browns.

That would be the plan.
Black was my second choice if I didn't go brown on the FC700R.
-
Eww numpad...
If only there was a TKL version ...
-
Edit: Oh cool! ETA mid June. Was wondering when they'd start shipping their thick PBT caps
-
Yeah I just preordered one last night - got MX Brown switches and the dark grey / blue colour combination, along with the leather wrist rest.
Considering that:
-> it's Ducky
-> it's thick PBT
-> it's dye sub
-> the low price
I reckon it's an amazing buy.
Not sure what everyone's obsession with TLK boards is, I use the numpad heaps, entering any kind of numbers with the top row of keys is just not right.
I'll be comparing it to my Cherry G80 with browns once it arrives. Super excited!!
-
I'm hunting for a numpad-less keyboard with a number of contenders. Ducky's new PBT caps do look very nice. 2 questions:
Are there plans on releasing a compact Ducky with PBT? (without a numpad)
Where are you pre-ordering the full-sized version?

We call keyboards without number pads Ten Key-less or TKL, compact keyboads are keyboards with just the main island(or the size of the main island), which is 60% of the board (no function keys, arrow keys, numberpad, etc.)
-
I've been waiting for these to come out, I'm excited for when they arrive in the US. I hope the version with Greens comes out promptly, I think that's the next keyboard I'm going to buy.
-
Wow!!! I love that color scheme so much! I would love to buy this board, is there any ETA on when they might arrive in the US?
-
Just pre-ordered mine :) on the same order as my Leopold fc700r.
ETA for me is 19/06
So excited.
As soon as I get it I'll post some pics for ya'll.
-
Looks awesome. What backlit color do you have? I assume this would look best with white leds, but since I've got blue I'm interested in seeing that
-
wow! Any chance they're going to release a green switch version? I saw a green switch in the second picture

I don't think they have backlights, and those aren't his photos its Ducky's.
-
It will be amazing if you can buy a 2087 with these caps for under $100.
-
They need to release a TKL version of this

They could also just sell the caps seperatly.

Looks like MK is starting to put up the listings:
http://mechanicalkeyboards.com/shop/index.php?l=product_detail&p=462 (http://mechanicalkeyboards.com/shop/index.php?l=product_detail&p=462)
http://mechanicalkeyboards.com/shop/index.php?l=product_detail&p=461 (http://mechanicalkeyboards.com/shop/index.php?l=product_detail&p=461)
More probably being put up as I post this. $119 for Blacks and $124 for Blues is a GREAT price for something with keycaps like that. I'm really impressed with Ducky.
-
Here's what the price breakdown is looking like on MechanicalKeyboards.com:
Blacks - $119
Blues - $124
Browns - $127
Reds - $128
Linear Grays - $134
Whites (probably means Clears) - $134
Greens - $136
-
YES!!!! Green Switches!!
-
So mid june would be the time to expect these to go in stock at mechanicalkeyboards.com?
-
Well mid June is when they're expecting to ship from PC Caae Gear here in Australia so yeh I'd imagine it would be similar over there. Also they seem to be priced very similarly for the US buyers so it would seem to be an insane bargain regardless of where you live lol.
To clarify:
- these are NOT backlit
- no plans for a TKL boare that I can see anywhere
You guys are lucky anyway - you get the full set of choices from mechanicalkeyboards.com, we only get red / black / blue / brown, no green or clear (and I was keen to try clears too) :(
In regards to the keycaps, PC Case Gear have started selling Ducky ABS caps for $25 -35 per 108? Key set (i.e. Incl the home / calc / my comp / email keys).
Not sure if that's a good thing that at least there are Ducky keycaps available or a bad thing that the ABS ones are that kinda price... That would indicate that if they were to release these thick dyesubbed PBTs, they'd probably be ~$45 minimum. Depending on the price of the keycaps, might be able to justify just buying a second board instead :D
I'll post pics when mine arrives too!!

Is there any way to check whether the "MX White" is going to be actually white or turn out to be "MX Clear"? Also can't quite find any good videos with MX White. I have seen a comparison where MX White is between MX Blue and MX Green and is sort of on par with MX Black in terms of force required. But still, it's hard to tell if MX White is about as stiff as (new) Black switches or is more difficult overall due to the tactile bump... or perhaps the bump makes it easier, resulting in some downward inertia after the bump.
Any ideas?
P.S.: MechanicalKeyboards does say that the Switches are "clicky" and "tactile", which indicates actual MX White. Where is the doubt that they may be Clears coming from?

Mechanicalkeyboards will correct the name if it's Clears instead of Whites. Like with the Pures that were Whites, they weren't sure if it was Whites or Clears and told people they would change the name if they were Clears.
-
I see. I thought there'd be some exact switch specification for these coming directly from Ducky already--not sure why the guesswork. Is Adding to Registry effectively preordering on MechanicalKeyboards? I have a feeling if I wait until the release date, they'll be all sold out before I reload the page (same goes for MX Browns).

I'm almost positive they're Clears. Ducky frequently refers to Clears as White because that's the Chinese name for them. Also, when they announced that these keyboards were coming out they specifically advertised "White(Clear)" switches. I don't think Ducky has ever used White (Milk) switches in any of their keyboards.
-
I wish I could find the post now but I seem to remember a topic in a Chinese forum that the White MX switch was brought back from the dead because Vortex/KBT put in a large order for them. So it is very likely the Ducky are MX Clears.
edit: just realized the Ducky 78 has MX Whites. Maybe they would share?
-
Thank you :) Makes sense. How are clears vs. browns? Watched this long video at one point recently:
and it's sort of informative... but not very clear (pun ...somewhat intended). The sample keypad also has scratchy brown switches, like my former keyboard, but I've tried browns that did not feel scratchy at all either--I guess different batches are different. Clears, however, are a mystery box to me. Should be a tad heavier than browns (which is good in my opinion), but just how much heavier? And are they prone to the noticeable friction that browns are prone to?
-

All G2 Pro boards are WASD backlit.

Lubed Clears with a lighter spring are heaven. I still use Blacks for gaming (though I really want a switch between a Red and a Black, a little closer to Blacks), but lubed, lighter Clears are my general use board and I don't see myself ever going back.
The tactile bump in Browns is just so small as to not be noticeable. In Clears, the heavier spring muffles it a little, but it's still more noticeable. With a lighter spring, you have a much more noticeable bump, but, IMO (and one that many disagree with), the lighter you get a Clear past ~65g, the less pleasant it is for me to use. Even with a Teflon lube (though admittedly not one of the awesome Krytox ones), my RK-9000 with Clears at 62g and 65g feels a little rough because of the size of the bump. Maybe with a good lube that will go away.
And yeah, I think you're right that certain batches may be worse. It could also be some factories are dirtier or some springs are more broken in.

I'm half tempted to buy two of these just for the keycaps. lol.
I would love to find something with greens in the future. But such is life being interested in keyboards and being australian.

Thank you again. Without opening up the switches (for lubricating and changing springs), can Clears be scratchy like Browns? Are they more of a workout for typing vs. Blacks? (stock Clear vs stock new Black)

I have found some less than awesome Clears, but most of them were used, so I can't speak to new ones. I wouldn't say they're more of a workout for typing than Blacks since both are heavier than Browns, Reds, and Blues.
-
How is clear compare to green?
Clear = medium tactile
Green = heavy click
-
To clarify:

All G2 Pro boards are WASD backlit.
... where did you get that from?
The spare red set of WASD keycaps included are translucent, so yes that would allow for backlighting, but the stock grey keycaps don't look very translucent to me...
Can't find any pictures of any backlighting, nor any mention of it on either PCCG or mechanicalkeyboards.com.
The model listed on the ducky channel http://www.duckychannel.com.tw/en/DK9008_G2Pro.html shows WASD backlighting but doesn't specify if it's actually the same model that's being shipped, as it makes no mention of the thick PBT keycaps...
I've never noticed and scratchyness with my browns but I've bought all my boards secondhand so I can't really give a proper insight I guess.
Hope they release the clears / greens etc in Australia too, but I'd want to try clears on a cheaper board first before committing to another one of these with clears...
-
There are photos of the PBT board with backlight:
They have purple backlight, as stated. Under WASD and some other "lock" keys. Doesn't look like there are LEDs under arrow keys, unless they are not represented in the photos.
-
Anyone know if there is a TKL version of this?
-
Anyone know if there is a TKL version of this?
Not at the moment :( I would be ALL OVER THAT. But I have to say these skinny bezel full-sized keyboards are quite small anyway (all of them, like the Rosewills, the Filcos, the Duckies, etc.) Surprisingly tiny--just 3" wider than the TKL.
-
Anyone know if there is a TKL version of this?
Considering Ducky has only just recently ventured into TKL territory... these boards and all other Ducky limited editions so far (except YOTD) have been full size. I doubt these will have a TKL edition.
-
sorry double posted

Found some nice discussion involving MX Clears and other less common switches:

Yeh as I said in my post, the WASD keys *if* you use the red WASD keycap set.
I'm not really interested in having red keycaps on a grey / blue keyboard (it really doesn't suit the look of it imo), and from what I can see, it doesn't look like the stock grey WASD keys have translucent legends..?
-
I'd say if you're looking for a full-size keyboard, I'd definitely get this. For the price and what it comes with (Thick Dyesub PBT's, double-sided PCB, USB NKRO, etc.), you really can't go wrong. I'm a huge fan of Ducky keyboards, and I think that their quality and build is just as good as any others like Filco, if not better.
Just my 2 cents.
-
Do you think they will put these up on amazon when it release?
-
I don't think so. You're probably going to want to keep your eyes open on mechanicalkeyboards.com ... I feel like an MK.com salesman sometimes... :)) Might as well go swimming if I'm already wet; some G2 Pro's with PBT's (thin).

Well I was thinking of full MX White boards, not the 78.

Oh wow MK is getting in Dark Grey, White and Green switched versions of these!? That's awesome - and tempting. If only I still liked full size D:
-
The only drawback for me of a fullsize is that I can't fit it in my backpack.

I can't wait for this keyboard, I think I'm going to pick up one of these and a new Poker. Who needs money anyway?

Haha, same thoughts here.
I'm buying a 2nd FC700R (I want a white one) and this board as soon as it's released.
-
I think the real question is:
Green, White or Dark Grey.
Dark Grey is appealing because I don't think any other manufacturer will make a full DG keyboard.
-
I'm picking Dark Gray. I typed on some MX Red/MX Black boards today at Fry's; and I think I wouldn't mind something just a wee bit stiffer then Blacks. I haven't had a MX Keyboard in a while due to going crazy.
Kind of makes me wonder if I'm a candidate for Cherry MY.
-
Thinking like a collector: I want Dark Grey maybe even though I HATE stiff linear switches (ugh Blacks) just for the sheer rarity of the board.
Too bad the rare switches don't come with Blue/Grey PBT caps.
-
It's pretty rock n roll of Ducky to be playing with these switches :D Next, a full board of light-greys! (stiff tactile)
-

I think that switch is one they can't source enough... the Shine 78 edition didn't come with any MX Greys except for a keychain switch.
-
I read in a Chinese review for DF9008G2 Pro PBT that the fonts on the keycaps are very "rough", or have a lot aliasing if you know what I mean. Is this generally true for all PBT dye-sub keycaps?
-
No. Imstos are as smooth as a babies bottom.
-

The Vortex ones from feng's groubuy have those sorts of issues. Ducky's promo photos seem decent, but quality might vary between boards.
-
Why can't more companies thing like ducky?
-
Well, while waiting for a reply from Ducky about the keyboard that's listed as having "White" switches on MechanicalKeyboards, I had a careful look on Ducky's Facebook channel... and found this page:
https://www.facebook.com/pages/Ducky-Keyboard/117547488320354
With the following description by Ducky:
"Ducky Keyboard
February 8
(Global) Ducky Dye-Sublimated PBT Keyboard with Cherry Black, Brown, Blue, Red, Green, Grey(Linear), White(Clear) switches.
So there we have it. The switches are going to be MX Clear, not MX White.
-
Well an MX White version is what I'd be most inclined to buy of the three rare switches. Bummer.
-

Told you ;D

These boards can't come soon enough! So pumped.

Very irritating continuation of my switch investigation!

(can't figure out how to get a perma-link to my post, but it's a bit down the page, starting with the gray keycap photo and ending with the last post on the page). The Ducky Nordic guy claims the switches are MX White, but everything I'm seeing there still suggests MX Clear.
I don't know why it's so difficult :(
-
Blame Cherry for not making their clear switches translucent.

If I hadn't already previously owned a Ducky Green and Ducky Clear, I would've jumped on this so hard.

I only wish Ducky released those keyboards with other keycap colors (white/beige). Would have had use for the switches AND keycaps (for my TKL keyboards).

Or did you mean for the Clear and Green keyboards???
-
Yes, the MX Clear is the one I've been waiting for (if you see my obsessive investigative posts above and in some other threads). The less common switches were only released on boards with gray keycaps. I REALLY want the white/beige set, as I love that combo. But I have no reason to buy those other colors of switches. I would love the MX Clear board with white/beige keycaps.
Maybe I should see if anyone wants to trade, if they are looking to buy one of the plain gray varieties.

If anyone is buying one of these keyboards and is looking to get the solid gray cap variety--please consider buying a white/beige kind and trading with me for the gray caps! I will love you a very long time and will cover shipping costs! (the keyboard I want only comes with gray PBT).

Already have a Deck so Clears are out, so it's either Greens or Dark Greys.
Greens would be my second MX Green board that I previously sold (the first DK9008G2 Pro edition). Dark Greys would be for comedy because I wouldn't dream of typing on even Blacks.

Still looking for someone to trade caps with! Someone must be buying one of those new thick PBT keyboards and wants it in gray!
-
I would be very interested in reading a review by rootwyrm on the Dark Grays :)
-
any word on blank sets being available?
-
Considering getting the Cherry Brown version from PCCG. Would it be better to get one of these? Or wait for new releases, such as the WASD V2? I live in Australia, so potential shipping costs for importing the WASD could be prohibitive... but let's assume that that isn't a factor.
-

I would just go for it if you're considering it, unless there's some specific reason you're waiting for the WASD. This keyboard looks to be an extremely great value for what you get - thick PBT dyesub caps frequently sell for north of $90 for the keycaps alone.
Alternatively, you could buy the WASD with no keycaps and put one of these Ducky sets on it, but that's assuming that Ducky even releases these separately from the keyboards.
-
I would definitely go for a Ducky over WASD, personally. Especially a Ducky with thick Dye Sub PBT :)
-

Dark gray switches or dark gray caps? ^^
I actually considered the dark gray switches, but don't have the funds free. If anyone wants to loan it out... ;)

Ducky vs. WASD v2 basically comes down to: what stabilizers and keycaps do you prefer? When you remove shipping from the equation, the WASD naked will be cheaper - by far. WASDv2 with keycaps? Probably still cheaper excluding shipping. Build quality? Both top notch. Switch availability? Ducky has the edge. What seals the deal for me is that WASD uses wire stabilizers and Ducky uses Cherry stabilizers. I absolutely hate wire stabilizers.
If WASD offered a v2C with Cherry stabilizers though? I would buy one in an instant. So you know. Get on that guys.
-
Thanks everyone. I shall order myself a DK9008G2! :)

My order has been shipped, so it should arrive either today or tomorrow. I'll put up some pics as soon as it does.
I went with grey / blue caps and brown switches (unfortunately not much choice in switches on pccasegear.com, otherwise I might've gone for clears.
Photoelectric, I'll pm you re caps...

How long does it usually take for the keyboard to get to you?

Mine shipped the day after I ordered it, and arrived two days after that. I ordered from MechanicalKeyboards.com

It looks a little something like this (apologies, I'm not a photographer. Also, the date stamp is permanently stuck on the camera lol):

What it came with - all this plus a USB cable (not pictured as it's already ziptied in place lol):

i currently have a das blue mx and thinking about getting the ducky. I've always wanted PBT key caps and this seems like a very good deal. i'm looking to get the browns as i do a lot of gaming that requires double tapping and I heard that browns are better. i also seem to like the sound of the browns better according to youtube demos.
so tempted!!
is the build quality on par with filco? and what stabilizers does ducky use? I've read that costar stabilizers are much better (like the ones on das) and that ducky uses different stabilizer types.

Ducky quality is fine.
Stabiliers are Cherry.

He probably meant the dye sub PBT versions!

Have any reviews popped up for the mx dark gray ducky yet? Reading some reviews of this switch it sounds like it is so stiff it is unusable.
Also do the dyesubs make the experience more quiet at all?
I've tried to find reviews and videos for that switch too, I was tempted to order one just for the sheer rarity of the switch, but just opted to go with my trusted mx blue switch. I just don't think I'd be able to use a linear switch that heavy. :'(

I might be convinced to sell one of my dark gray dye-sub PBT sets...

I'm trying to find someone to loan me a Dark Grey so I can write up a review. TBH, with the thick dye-subs, I think they're nuts if they're calling it unusably heavy. The MX Green actually feels like Blues in part due to the extreme weight of the keycaps. Seriously, these things are HEAVY. I mean REALLY heavy. Heaviest keycaps I've handled outside of Model M's. End result is that other than issues with the stabilized keys it's lighter than a Model M. (Stabilized keys, it's a spacing issue. I strike too far off center.)
If I had to make a wild guess, I'd say Dark Greys with the stock keycaps are around Classic Blacks with DSA. Give or take a little bit either way. Probably a little bit heavier. But I mean really, they're not that heavy. They're rated at 80cN and if Greens feel like Blues (55cN) then the DGs should end up just slightly north of Black (50cN.)

If you had the white/beige set, I would commence convincing you immediately :)

The irony is that I'm actually looking for the white AND blue sets to make a mix-and-match for a project I'm working on. Unfortunately, not much hope of that - cost is just too great.

Well I'll traded you your dark grey F5 - F8 for my blue F5-F8 if that's any use to you... otherwise I'm gonna have to email Ducky to see if they'll sell me the dark grey F5-F8 separately.

Just wondering, because I couldn't find it mentioned earlier, does this keyboard come with a PS/2 adapter? If not, would you recommend getting one? It says it has full N-key rollover over USB, but I remember reading the mechanical keyboard guide on OCN that interfacing via PS/2 is much more superior than interfacing via USB.

No it does not come with a PS/2 adapter... nor keychain which I wanted quite badly :S

Haha, sadly, I need the whole set.. I may actually switch out to my white/grays from T's sale. They'll certainly make the switch feel more pronounced, which I like. The downside is that I have to fix the spacebar - Cherry stabilizers + warped spacebar = MISERY.

@sonic_the_hedgehog
Could you flip the thick pbt keycap that we can see the bottom? Thanks alot :)

Quick phone shot. Keycap on the right is a 1988 Model M two piece, on the left a Ducky PBT dye-sub.
Yes. They are Model M thick.

Mine arrived today. Got the Blue/Grey MX Browns. Pretty happy with it so far. It is a bit bigger than my previous keyboard, but I'll get used to it. This is my first mechanical keyboard - been using membrane keyboards for my whole life.
I have two questions:
a) Is it possible to customise the keys? I'm not talking about the physical keys, but say the "PC" button or the "Mail" button located in the top right hand corner?
b) What is the proper typing technique for a mechanical keyboard? I've found that my typing has gotten substantially louder, indicating that I'm bottoming out. How do you learn to not bottom out? I've Googled it and searched on GeekHack, and haven't found anything.
The one thing I wish I could do would be to not have the Num Lock LED on the whole time, but still retain function of the Numpad, because the light is always on the corner of my peripheral vision, and may become a slight annoyance.

These use the default application as defined by Windows - the only one you cannot customize in that fashion is the 'PC' button which will always open 'My Computer' or 'My Documents.' (And I forget how to change between the two - it's complicated.)

There is no 'proper typing technique.' Bottoming out is not an inherently bad thing. If you bottom out, you bottom out. This is not an inherently bad thing or necessarily a bad thing. There's not really any supporting research I'm aware of. (I say this as someone who bottoms out not only MX Greens but Buckling Spring and even Super Blacks.)

How do you go about changing the keys other than the "PC" one? Furthermore, does it apply to the "Fn" key as well? Because currently, there is nothing assigned to Fn+10 to Fn+12, and I would like to be able to customise the function of those keys as well.
Thanks!

Actually I have a question about those miscellaneous keys too. Is there any way to get them to do anything on OS X? I'm not really sure what to search for.

Oh man, this color scheme is so good looking.

Yesterday i recieved my grey/blue ducky and immediately noticed the sticky spacebar. I think i also have a warped spacebar wich puts pressure on the stabilizers. Also some keys on the numpad were bad quality. From the top side of the cap you could see the shape of the part that goes over the cherry switch (the round part with the cross). The surface was really bad and not smooth at al. Only with two caps though. I heard there were alot of problems manufacturing these caps and they stopped making them. So i dont really have confidence my replacement wil be any better. Would it be better to get a ducky shine?
