Post by: thp777 on Thu, 23 May 2013, 01:22:06
Just wondering how much interest there would be in some designs ive made for custom keycaps. i will be adding more as they are completed.

Lego compatible keycaps. neckpost,single, quad

test cap in the lowest cheapest detail. fits and works perfectly and is sturdier then a normal cap IMO.

Can you make one in the shape of a square Lego?

I can attach mini-figs to the top of it along with other Lego items.

Some of those taller ones would look crazy. The keyboard would look like a model city... which sounds strangely appealing.

I think it would be cool to also have a lego style with only one post in the middle for a lego head to be attached to it.

This aint gonna be cheap for sure, the design is much more complicated than click clacks.

You don't pay for difficulty when 3d printing; you pay for how much material used.

Aha, I was planning out a Tardis keycap (Just a one-off machined metal one for now.) and lo, I find you have already designed one. I was planning on one pretty much as your large Tardis here. I will maybe try something else, I guess there aren't that many original ways of sticking something square onto a square cap. Nice designs, the upright Dalek and the Cybermen especially.

TARDIS cap #2 is very nice, but I can't love Dr. Who again until Matt Smith leaves the show.

I always wondered if home 3d printers could print caps since the resolution might not be good enough.

in my experience they are not good enough for this level of fine detail

It is a limit of the 3d printing technology that they look a bit "coarse"? (like a sugar cube)

This looks awesome. Can you somehow "sand" the caps down so they look smooth? I'm not sure how but maybe heat it up until it smooths itself out (<- don't take my word on that).

What kind of price are we looking at.

3d printing can do it, however, not home 3d printers.
Realistically, you need industrial types to do it.

Yes, you can smooth 3d prints, however ABS printed on any 3d printer is not nearly as strong as ABS that has been injection molded, and those who have made keycaps have had them break. There is also the matter of colors, most home 3d printers are single color only, so forget legends unless you spring for a deluxe model or make your own. Costs for other materials and printers goes up VERY fast.
