Title: Any Green people here?
Post by: tp4tissue on Fri, 24 May 2013, 13:27:06
Just got these 2 Japanese Persimmon trees. Delivered USPS, the leaves are trimmed back.

The slip says let rest in "shade" for a few days to a week.

Does the inside of my house + windows open count as "shade" ?

And what is it resting from exactly?

I'd set them outside under shade opposed to inside.

sun burn?

EDIT: Ok so my googlefu is week today but one place I found recommened planting them immediatly but that may be because those particular trees are shipped with a gel coating wrapped in plastic.

I honestly have no idea why you have to let them rest. I would think if anything they would need planted and watered, especially the water part.

Unless they overly saturate them for shipping which would make sense that they would have to rest in the shade.

If they shipped the tree, it may be adjusting to a new environment (temperature, humidity etc.)

Yes it is basically advising against giving them any more shock, after the traumatic shipping experience. Unless you have the most ideal planting condition there is a good chance they won't recover and simply die.

I wish I could plant flowers, but I have an apt and no space.  Morning glories are my favorite, followed by bleeding hearts.

Morning Glories, new ones bloom every day!

I do prefer my plants with olive oil - but I do confess that I wouldn't be brave enough to eat this one ...
Kinda pornographic isn't?

Yea as said before they need to recover from the stress of being transported. It's likely that its too early to transplant and repeated stress can trigger unexpected behavior in certain plants such as expending its energy into seed production or blooming early in a last ditch effort to reproduce instead of continuing with any vegetative growth. I'm sure putting the plants out of direct sunlight, indoors with a nice movement of air will benefit the plant as this will protect them from any high winds or other natural stress inducing elements. At least for a little while. Good luck.
