My monitor is calibrated by probe..
But despite this.. I find that all the BDs I get are mastered differently, so I end up having to play with brightness and contrast on every movie...
Why is there no standard ?

On my two dell 24008WFP's I have to turn the brightness down fairly low or else I feel like my eyes are burning after a few hours.

yea but those standards are unachievable for any monitor under $700, and even then, the standards don't do well without ambient light control

My u2410's are 10bit. I have 3 of them, 2 purchased together, one separately. I can tell u they are factory calibrated by dell and all 3 have exactly the same color profile to within 98%... Or so they say. The images appear identical on all three screens. Depending on the color space you're working on... You can get very close to print providing it is professionally printed under the same color profile.
Not sure about video, though I would imagine something similar?
.. Just to add these monitors are fairly inexpensive now. I have spent approx 1500$ on all 3, but they are a hell of allot cheaper now

I don't care. Colors on my LCDs are totally off anyway, due to Redshift (http://jonls.dk/redshift/). Well, I don't watch movies...

I think it is because it depends on the room's lighting conditions? Lighter = you need brighter screen.
I have my computer monitors at 110 cdm2 and in the lounge I have the TV at about 140 cmd2.
Contrast however I don't think you should play with? Depending on how the control is implemented on the device it could affect the gamma curve. REC.709 defines a particular gamma response.
I have my TV as close as I can to 2.2 and have the profile set to 2.2 as well.
I *think* (not entirely sure) if madVR plays a HD movie it applies rec.709 then will adjust the gamma response to 2.4 as necessary as I've told it the TV is already calibrated to 2.2.
I think in this way, you're viewing it as close as the producer intended.
The annoying thing is if I want to change the luminance of the display it changes the white point, colour response etc.. so really requires a full tweak to the settings + re-profiling. If your TV can support it then it would be ideal to set say 3 profile: 110 cmd2 for dark viewing, 140 for some ambient, and 170 or so for sun shining directly through !! Then switch profiles on your computer (assuming you drive the TV with a computer) to match the 3 situations as necessary.

My monitor auto adjusts based on the amount of black on the screen. It didn't work very well at all until I sent it back to Asus, now it either does nothing or works so well I don't even notice it's changing the settings.

The nice thing about standards is that there are so many to choose from.
In multiple monitor setups I usually try to adjust so they are about the same.
In single monitor setups I usually turn the brightness down a bit as I am usually in darker areas.

There are different standards out there, but don't understand why you guys are stressing the point. It's rather simple now.
sRGB/Rec.709 define the primaries for RGB. They are the same. This is what you should calibrate to & is the standard. The standard for images, and for HDTV. Gamma differs slightly, but just aim for 2.2 to keep it simple. If you use something like madVR it will take care of converting that for you based on the source information. 6500K is your white point /colour temp to aim for.
As I said, those standards don't define a brightness as that is related to ambient light. If you have sun shining onto your screen you will need more brightness or your image is washed out. In dark/controlled environments its generally accepted that 100-120 cdm2 is the "standard" (and will keep eye strain away!).
The rest is how the bluray is produced. So if they want you to watch a crazy oversaturated film thats what they've intended, and if its muted and less contrasty thats what they intended as well. You shouldn't go changing settings to pump up a muted film just because you find the look boring.. it wasn't what was intended.
So, 1 standard.. sRGB / Rec.709, forget the rest.

I change them to my liking. I just make sure that everything looks decent enough and everything is clearly visible. There is nothing that I do that requires anything beyond that.
One pet peeve of mine is when people adjust their colors on their TV to make things look crazy. When i watch TV at my brother's house people are orange and appear to be living in a world made of candy. Generally, I prefer a more balanced calm image in terms of brightness contrast and so forth.

well, maybe he watches anime.. where the saturated colors are fine.
