I am looking to do an ergo clear mod, but I wanted to know what you guys think the best spring for the job is? Thanks
-
Preference.
I used 65g springs and they feel great. I plan to use 62g springs on my next board with clears.
-
62g (I think they exist specifically for this purpose), but I'd like to try 55g springs.
-
My personal preference - Lubed 62g for gaming/typing or lubed 50-55g for typing only.
-
It's up to you, everybody likes other springs, for me goldd 55g springs are the best. Others prefer 62g, which I also like but not that much like 55g springs. You should try out which springs you prefer, the only thing you have to keep in mind is that some springs can't reset heavy keys right.
-
i just picked up some 62g's from sherry yesterday for ergo clears
-
It's very much a preference thing as has been stated. I can't stand super light Ergo Clears with Red/Brown/Blue springs, so I know I'd hate them with 55g springs. I'm not a huge fan of the 62g springs either. 65g are the best I've tried so far, but I've got some 67g lubed Ergo Clears that I'll be tossing on my GH60 that feel perfect from the playing with them I've done, but won't be able to pass judgement until it's assembled.
-
I'm going to say 67
because it seems 62+ helps prevent sticking, and you Lose 5g over time. SO... 67-5 = 62.. Woooooooooo!!!! :D
-
I am currently using a keyboard with reds and like it a lot for gaming, but when I am typing I hit the wrong keys a lot because they are so light. So I want something a bit heavier but still good for gaming to where they don't become tiring.

Unfortunately 67g springs are a bit of a unicorn. I saw them a while ago in what looked like a KBDMania group buy, but when I posted in here asking about it, no one really responded. Since I didn't know how or if I could get in on the buy, I couldn't get any. Fortunately, Calavera got some and was selling them and someone was gracious enough to give me their spot for one of the three or four sets of 100 when they popped up in his thread.
So, in general, you'll only be able to get 55g, 62g, 65g, or 80g springs.

You know it'd be really cool if they made clear plastic cherry switches with the "gold spring" inside. then we put it in the ergodox, with clear acrylic key caps..
Oh yea.. sexiness..

There was an IC for these not too long ago. I don't know what happened with that except that it hasn't happened yet.
-
With that much plastic, even "clear" between your eye and the spring, you'd probably barely make it out anyway. Especially with the stem on top of it.

Personally 55g's were a tad too light and 62g's were a tad too heavy for my tastes. Anything in-between is safe I would say. I think 58g's would be the best compromise for me at least.
-
I liked stock cherry red springs, but I also like my 55g. Just remember to lube!

Come on Calvera, 58? :D given that these springs have +/- 3g of tolerance, and the fact that the more used keys lose 5g over time...
You're telling me, that you'll only accept 58g... :D
-
I haven't tried 58g yet but I think they'd be perfect. I have both 55g and 62g clears and the difference is quite obvious when typing. :D

I wonder if we can petition cherry to share some of their research with us.. Maybe they have the Just noticeable constant for spring weights :D

62g GOLD PLATED
Because everyone I know always checks to make sure all my springs are gold plated
I always thought the entire point of the ergo clear mod was to lessen the actuation force of the standard clear switch. So what, ANY spring replacement of a clear switch is ergo cleared? If it's not a 45 spring than it isn't really ergo clear, it's something else IMO

45 is actuation force, 60g is bottom out force, which is what we're going by. So 62g is 2g heavier than the standard blue/brown/red switch. We do this because sometimes 60g is a little too light and produce a sticky feeling in the switch.
Also, yes, I check to see if my springs are gold plated. I refuse to use them otherwise. #LEGITBALLIN #GOLDSPRINGS

Same! I've been reading that I shouldn't use Krytox 205 on my ergo-clears though because it reduces how tactile the switch is. What are your plans?
I might just lube springs with Victorinox and leave it at that.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I thought that the gold plated material on those springs caused them to "snap back" faster than non-gold plated. Could just be hype for all I know, I've never seen them IRL.
-
while we are on the topic of springs....
Korean Spring 45g, 50g, 55g, 58g, 62g, 67g
how would these compare with what come in the switches already??
for ergo-clear purposes of course.

HAHAHAHAHAHAH.... i guess it's possible, but sounds very snake oil to me.. unless we're to assume that the springs twists against the base and bottom of the stem, in which case the smoother coating would lower the friction due to that...
But I HIGHLY doubt this.

People seek gold springs for the same reason they seek CCs -- rarity and bling.

Wrong I'm side-by-siding regular 62g and my golds right now. Golds do snap back faster.

Getting tired of people putting these gold springs on a pedestal thinking it's springs bestowed upon worthy humans from the gods.
They're just more accurately spec'd. And even this isn't even 100% proven. If they are in fact hand picked to have less difference, we're talking 1~2g here at the most. They're like golden AK's druglords have. Extra bling, but shoot same kind of bullets. (Unless they have individual bullets with gold casings. In that case I retract my statement haha) Also, they're heavier due to the coatings.
Do I want gold springs? Sure, but not really. Do I think it's worth the hype? Most certainly **** no.

I'm not saying they're better, I'm saying there IS a difference between regular and gold. And it's very noticeable. I'm also saying I prefer golds for the feel.
I've already compared the 62gs you sold me and the gold ones I had from before on the same board in different places, I can fully tell which key has golds and which has regulars.

And this.
55g still stick a little on the way up after lubing. I don't like 62gs much as its too stiff for me. Middle ground would be 58s, if they exist.

That's because the 62g gold springs are more like 63~65g.
I have gold plated 59g in clears and they're definitely heavier than the 62g regular springs.

So how would Korean switches compare to cherry since people who tried both and compared them they say Cherry are more stiff at bottoming out even though the spring rate is of same number.
For example this is what mainly people claim:
45-50g cherry blues/reds = Korean 65
So I guess if I would like to go and buy blue switches and turn them into Ghetto Greens I would most likely need 80g Korean springs to get the feeling of the Green/Black MX whish should be around 60-65g, correct?
-

45-50g cherry blues/reds = Korean ~60
FTFY

No, I'm basing everything on how Korean springs are spec'd, not cherry corps. So in that regard blues/browns/reds are 57~59g.

alrighty then, so what you saying the reds/browns/blues are more like around 60g of the Korean ones. For example I like how buckling switch feels, some people say greens are sort of close to it, but in order to get that feeling I will most likely need to mix blue stems with Sherry's 80g Korean springs, that's what makes sence to me so far because there aren't any options in between such as 72g or 75g at the moment.
While back I had Razer BW with blue switches, I'm not typist but I like to game and really to me don't matter if its tactile switch or linear, I really liked the tactile feeling of the blues and that lovely sound they made, but the force needed to compress them felt so weak, so weak that when I miss keystroke was easier to press different key by mistake.....
I'm using CM QFR with reds now, its fine and I'll be damned but feels more resistant than the blues if memories serves me right.

I don't think so, I have gold 62g springs in my vintage blacks and if that would be true they should feel similar to vintage blacks with brown/blue/red spring if there is such a high tolerance. But they feel much lighter and very different.

Sorry, not entirely an appropriate subforum to ask, but since this is the latest thread on Clears and has replies from people who have used / installed them: would anyone happen to have one unmodified Clear switch I could borrow for a few days? I would really like to try it out, as I plan on getting a keyboard with MX Clears (based on everything I've read and my appreciation of MX Browns), but I'm trying to minimize the chances that I'll be making an expensive mistake. I would ship it back.
Or is there a good place to purchase 1 switch without overpaying for the novelty factor?

1 clear is not enough.. sign up for the test board.
-
It's something! I found a kind person who has agreed to send me one switch (I'll cover shipping and such). Where is this sign up for the test board? I must have overlooked it.

So no consensus? I'm using ergo clears with red/blue/brown springs but now I can't decide on lubed 55g or 62g clears for my GH60. Can we at least get a consensus as to lighter or heavier and lubed or not lubed?

Sounds like its all personal preference but 62h-67g work well.
-
I doubt we're ever going to get one variation of the switch that everyone agrees is the best combination. Just take your current ones with the cherry springs as a benchmark - if you prefer something similar, 55g. If you want something heavier, 62g. No comments about 65g springs as I'm not a fan of heavy switches.
I'd say lubed always feel better, provided its done properly.
-
I think I'm the only one that likes light springs. I like typing on air.
-
So I know this thread it pretty old, but I have been wondering about this myself as I am going to mod my mx red poker board with an alum plate and ergo clears.
I have been talking with GON about his clear and spring mods that he has available, and I asked him how his 62g compares to gold 62g. He told me that gold 62g were actuall 67g. Is this accurate? I really want a spring that feels a little lighter than black springs on a clear, but still heavier than mx brown/red springs.
-
Gold 62g is more like 63.5g, as I always say. It's lighter than 65g.
That's why it's PERFECT

If only it wasn't so hard to get my hands on them x.x . The struggle for my perfect 60%....
-
Well, I thought I wanted gold "63"g springs, but after I soldered all of my 62g Clears in, fully lubricated, these already feel much tougher than my favorite Browns. So now I realize I definitely couldn't go with heavier gold springs. Even trying a few switches with keycaps on an empty plate did not give a full impression until I had a complete assembled board. From my experience of playing with single and small batches of switches, they feel significantly lighter individually, but gain toughness when mounted and placed at normal typing angle.
If anything I wonder if I should try stock Blue springs when I take my Blue switches apart for modding. I mean I really like 62g Clears, but I kind of like the softness of Browns, so these feel much tougher in comparison.
One thing to add though is that I definitely type with greater accuracy on these tougher Clears vs. Browns, as Browns are just so easy to actuate :)
