Title: Bananas' Custom Keyboard Carrying Case
Post by: CPTBadAss on Mon, 03 June 2013, 20:06:38
I've teased this for a little while but my sister (Bananas) finally sewn me a custom keyboard carrying case. I've been asking for one since my Filco travels a lot to and from work. I haven't had the chance to try out the full-size Filco in this case but it fits my FC700R and Pure fine. The Filco fits PERFECTLY. So does the FC700R and Pure. Sadly, the SSK doesn't fit it. It's a soft case, made from a yard of this soft blue cloth, a yard of fuse-able fleece, and some scrap fabric Bananas had. We added the purple zipper later. She also sprayed it with something that made the cloth hydrophobic. It's not entirely waterproof but it will repel water.

The Filco fits!!! And it looks kinda weird because it has the plastic covering on it. I was traveling with it and the cover is always on when it travels.

If people are interested at all, Bananas has said she would be interested in making one for a giveaway. But we're not doing a GB. Hope you guys like it :D.

I can try to answer any questions you guys have but I'm really horrible at sewing/fabric/fashion stuff. And I asked her how she made it but she said she kinda free-styled it. I can try and post her mini guide if anyone is interested as well.

Nice and simple. I like it! I might make myself one of these if Bananas doesn't mind me stealing her design.

That's the thing, she didn't go by any pattern or anything. She just kinda made it she said. Want me to ask her her process though? I pretty much just gave her the dimensions of my Filco and she went and made the case.

They're just patches but I love it regardless.

I've been thinking about putting some hard foam or cardboard inside to stiffen it up. I'm not sure yet though. I still haven't tried the case out with the Filco since I keep leaving it at work.

I love it.  Its about time someone gave that $50 EK case some competition.

I gotta ask: is this something with foam on the inside, or is it just a zip-up bag sized to the keyboard? If you were to put your keyboard inside this bag, and then drop the bag a few feet to the ground, is there anything inside the bag to protect it?

Currently there's no foam inside but I'm thinking about adding some, like I said before.

I tried putting my SSK in it and then figured that an SSK, F, or M would just smash the concrete it fell on so it'd be fine :P

Maybe a keyboard bandolier, or a scabbard.  :D

Keyboard bandolier would be so amazing Krog haha.

Also, I updated the OP with some exciting news: It fits my Filco fullsize! We were so worried it wouldn't fit but it's perfect. The next bag I get her to make, I'm gonna have her add pockets or something so I can add in some foam. And it will probably fit a TKL...possibly my KMAC. But I'm really happy with this one.

I just found this link (http://news.cnet.com/8301-17938_105-57590077-1/spill-a-lot-neverwets-ready-to-coat-your-gear/). Apparently there's this spray called neverwet that will even repel chocolate syrup. I think I'm going to get some and try it on the current carrying case I have. Anyone try this yet?

It was vaporware last I heard - sounded promising, never hit commercial availability (or even availability at all).  Depending on the application, you could try using a DWR fabric coating like one of those from nixwax or similar (although DWR is hardly a silver bullet - it adds restistant, but won't make anything waterproof).  Or just use a plastic bag or liner if impermeablity isn't a problem.

Edit - go figure, home depot is selling this stuff apparently (last time I looked into neverwet was for outdoors apparel applications about a year ago, the company wasn't really willing to talk then):
http://www.homedepot.com/p/t/204216476?catalogId=10053&langId=-1&storeId=10051&N=5yc1v&R=204216476 (http://www.homedepot.com/p/t/204216476?catalogId=10053&langId=-1&storeId=10051&N=5yc1v&R=204216476)

Now that this stuff can be bought, I need to procure some and try it for myself.

Hm ok. My sister used waterproofing spray so it's not bad. I just thought it'd be cool to have a syrup-proof carrying case.
