Blarg, spinning inside in trainers is just terrible.  I did 2 winters on the trainer every day and haven't done that again in probably 2 years following.  Fat biking / running / anything other than sweating in a corner is so much more satisfying to me (and I live in Iowa => the weather here sucks pretty much all the time).

I used to do the same thing. At some point I was like @#$% it , and #$%% me for thinking my bike will melt from bad weather. I bought winter gear, toe covers insulation base layer whatever, and now I ride through winters. They are hardly distinguishable from spring and fall here anyway (Holland).

There is also a strange kind of satisfaction you get from going out when it is not the "cycling season" your roadbike caked with mud. You can not help but feel at least a little bad ass, even if that is only in your mind. Of course I am still so OCD that I carefully clean and grease the bike in the weekend.

Feels good man to get out even when it is winter.  Now we have very different winters and summers here, but that does not require one to spend their time suffering indoors.

What is this "Winter" of which you speak?  Is that when the days are shorter and it gets down to 60° outside?

Nah, North Face is the Texas sorority/fraternity uniform and seems to be popular in the Midwest too.  When I was in Seattle (the PNW), Marmot and Mountain Hardware were the top contenders and, if you lived there long enough or had money, Arc'teryx.  The quality of those three brands puts North Face to shame.  North Face is intro level beginners stuff or stuff you only use on occasion.  It's a fashion statement.

I'm too short to wear North Face. They seem to make the jackets for taller people.  :(

oh yes i'm well aware of the hierarchy :)) there is still a part of me that wants a red arcteryx jacket just because, even though they're about $450 on sale.

Keep your eyes open on Steep and Cheap and Backcountry.com and you might find it cheaper.  I got my Mountain Hardware coat for like $80 or 90 there and it was a $300 coat.

Rohan and Craghoppers are my main go-tos. Rohan are increasingly trying to appeal to the middle-class dog walker and international traveller crowd though, but at least that's still better than douchey college kids.

I have a north face bag that both looks cool and is super useful. I use it for everything. 30 liters, I even been on short vacations with just that bag.

I'm in California and I wear Northface jackets but not during this time of year though. It does get cold here during the Winter time.

what part of california?

north/central?

there is maybe 2 days of the year that you'd need a northface jacket in the south. and even then, nothing a hoodie wouldn't take care of

Northern California, I used to live in the Bay Area. I mainly work nights and a little bit outside so in during the colder months I defintely need something more than a sweater. But yeah for the most part, especially in Southern California you could get away with a sweater.

I've usually considered weather along the Pacific coast a non-issue, from San Diego to San Francisco.
