Title: Skeldon Phantom Case GB [Getting ready to ship TO YOU!]
Post by: i3oilermaker on Mon, 10 June 2013, 15:57:35
This is a group buy for the Skeldon Phantom Case.

Disclaimer:  This case is custom and it is expensive.  It is created from high end materials and high end tooling.  It is also very heavy which creates high shipping costs.  Boost worked really hard to make this the ultimate case, so if you can not afford it, or do not like it, please take your comments elsewhere.

The Case:
[attach=1][attach=2][attach=3][attach=4]

FAQs

How much does the case weigh? 5.5 lbs / 2.49 Kilograms
What boards will it fit?  The included plate is designed for the Phantom, but future compatible plates will allow for other boards.
Can I order more than one? Yes, just fill out the form a second, or third time.
What color is the plate? All plates will be anodized in Gold
Can I make the top and bottom different colors? No
How long will this be open?  This buy will tentatively be open until June 30th

The Cost
$290 + Anodizing + Shipping + PayPal

Breakdown
Top Half $60
Bottom Half $150
Plate $30
Sanding $20
Chamfer $15
Screws $5
TechKeys Order Fulfillment $10

Anodizing costs $90 per color, and with a MOQ of 5, the most anodizing will cost will be $18.  The more orders for a color, the less the cost will be.  The second post will be updated with current color counts, and you may change your color by sending me a PM.

Shipping - We need to collectively cover the cost to ship these cases to us from the manufacturer, and then to you.  Large flat rate boxes are $17 for domestic and $56 for international.  With $7 extra to have the cases shipped to us, the totals are $24 for domestic and $63 for international.  We will continue to search for a cheaper alternative for international, but at 5.5 pounds and rates what they are, it may be difficult.

Is there any chance of getting the plate anodized the same color as the case (have them dipped at the same time)?

You can try to convice Boost otherwise, but I was told all plates will be anodized gold.

Yea, I know what I chamfer is. I was wondering why that was in the break down since I firgured it would be included in the cost of the base

Going to chamfer all of edges as its really sharp and cut myself on the proto. Cnc guy said it was a separate process.

Custom plate and you don't need to remove the tennsy spacer while using this case is the cut out is deep enough tho some type of insulation is recommended between the pcb and bottom half.

I just have a few questions for this:

1) when is payment due? Just when we place order or later on hen GB finishes taking orders?

2) could shipping combined with others in my area save money or would it not be very efficient due to weight and size?

3) Finally, can the cases be engraved AFTER the anodising process? Or does that have to be done BEFORE?

I also want to say that this case looks fantastic. Good on you Boost for making his a reality. Looks damn fine :)

Payment is due when the buy closes.  Participants will have about a week to pay.

Boost was going to check if 2 cases could fit in a large flat rate box.  Perhaps if there are more than 2 we can pursue other shipping options.

I will defer to boost on #3

It said that future plates would be compatible. Does that mean there is a chance I could get ANS125? Or is it going to be ANS150 ONLY for now?

Thanks guys :)

Engraving is done before then anodized process.

Currently only going the ansi150 right now and will be making more plates for different layouts once I get more time.

This engraving, is it an option provided by you guys? If not, I'm guessing we can purchase the cases unanodized?

Also, the plates provided with these should allow for switch swapping without desoldering right?

How many cases can you fit in a box?
What is the weight limit of the box?

Will you entertain requests to use a custom box for shipping since that MIGHT possibly drive down the shipping cost for international?
I am guessing perhaps $20-30, but I am just pulling this number from the air.

EDIT:
6lbs Priority Mail to my country is $53 + shipping for anodizing (package less than 12")
Seems to be the same for a box 13"x5"x5". Need exact dimensions to estimate.
At least $20 savings taking into account cost for the custom box.
$65 ships as Express Mail international.

Yep, I'm thinking of changing mine to that, too. That would be ANSI 150 w/Short Right Shift and Split Backspace.

So, you're going to design another top with 1.5x blockers on the ends, instead of the winkey blockers, right?? ;D

And I still think the plate layout should be a separate option from the top case (winkey-blockers or not).

Cuz it's boost's case and he don't wanna?

You can re-anodize anything you want after you get it. KMAC, LZ, Skeldon case, whatever.

If it's like this shade of gold I will take one, but iirc that's real gold plating, if you could do that too I would take one also  :blank:

Is the cable hole just a straight hole or is there any kind of retention in there?

Also when will all the new plates and options be available in the form?

They should be an option now.

Nope. Still no options for splitted shift/backspace and also case options and plate options still not separated, so when you want ANSI 150 you cannot choose if winkey or winkeyless case.

Thanks for the answer.

On the order form, what's the difference between "86 key (Winkey)" and "ANSI 150"? I have an ANSI 1.5 Phantom PCB (order code "PHANSI"), and would not want the Skeldon to have the 1x tabs, so what should I order?

I just got my phantoms, controllers, and plates in the mail today.  If someone wants one of them, I have a (phantom, plate, controller) set that I'll sell off.  I decided I only want one.

That being said, All the fuss I put up about Gold anodizing on the plates was for nothing.  I ordered Purple today after seeing purple anodizing pic's.

I have to admit, now that I got my phantom/plates, I'm starting to get excited for this again.  After my springs got lost in the mail and the prof debacle, I started to regret this whole venture.

Yes, you can't anodize anything but aluminum and samples are always aluminum.

The samples may vary due to the surface finish the anoidizer receives

If the color you selected does not make 5, then at the end you must select a different color, or no anodized.

I would guess 3-4 weeks manufacturing, 1 week for deliver, couple days to get them packed up and sent out.

Anodizer is out about 7 to 10 days right now.  I hope to get all the keyboards dropped off Friday or Monday, then will pack and ship them to you(boost) and the other guy(TechKeys) after I get them back.

Obviously, if they get them done sooner, I will get them to you sooner.

I would have had these done in the time projected, but some of the delays held up my end of things too.

So just so I understand, the anodyzer is busy for the next 7-10 days and will start on this afterwords? or will the cases be ready about 7-10 days out (from now) ?

I think he meant that its 7-10 days behind schedule, so they're still needing to anodise some or all of the cases but they will be shipped soon.

Same here. I'm 5 days into working 8 days in a row, and we are doing inventory, and my test install of radius isn't wanting to connect to anything but localhost. It's been terrible, so I share your pain.

(just kidding I don't know)

What screws exactly were they? Just curious is all.

Also is that text lasered on to the back of the cases or over the image? I can't tell hahaha  :p

It was lasered.

4-40 socket head screws. 7/16

I didn't think red was an option, but even the black is hawt!

Thanks very much for the pictures booost!

Red wasn't really an option but I ended up paying the full cost for red as I was the only one wanting it.

And yeah, thanks very much for the photos boost! I'm guessing that you chucked an extra case in with the red batch and that ones (the back with the lasered text) is yours?

Your case and the prototype was red. Didn't know he was going to anodize it red and I told him to anodize the proto in any color...

IMO the raw sanded one is the best looking case.

Lol. IMO the raw finish is the best!

The screws are in and just did a test firmest on the proto and it's perfect. Going to start boxing this weekend and ship out on Monday. !

Edit: Just got shipping notification! I hope to see this sometime next week.

So excited.

Mine is "out for delivery" ! Maybe I'll bike home and pick it up at lunch.

edit: picked it up from my old address. this case is beautiful. Puts my KMAC to shame. Pictures to come when I get home.

edit: took it apart: it's excellent. Teensy channel is great. overall beautiful.

I am, however, missing a rubber foot. What model is it so I can order a spare?

edit: typing on it now. I went with 62g whites and a stock white for the spacebar (needs to be heavy to hold up the titanium spacebar I put on it. Of all my kb's this deserves it the most. It's excellent!

I have all cherry stabs except for spacebar where I went costar 'cause I have exactly zero cherry stabilizer wires that length.

Some things to note:
screws are non-metric. Closest for case is 2.5mm hex (little big) and closest for internal is T10 (little small) I'll likely replace these with metric ones eventually.
Case comes to a nice point (angle). I really love the back side of the keyboard. You'll know when you see it. This is begging for cherry profile.

You will have to use in'switch LEDs for capslock and scrolllock. I don't have either installed and don't need 'em!

The only real "gripe" I have is to keep the case bolts the same size, the rear ones have really deep holes and I couldn't get them to work well with my screwdriver. I had to pull an allen wrench set out of my bike bag to get them in/out. still, it looks excellent.

The machining is really really good on this. Made in the USA and very high quality! OTD wishes they had this.

The top plate is very thin and light, wasn't really expecting that.

The teensy cutout channel in the inside of the bottom case and the cablerouting are both really good.

Things I need to fix on mine:
one keyswitch (4) isn't fully seated, need to hit it with the iron real quick.
gotta come up with a worthy keymap (hint: dvorak/qwerty)
need to find a fourth bumpon and install those
Put cherry keycaps on it instead of tai-hao

Thanks for the feedback DV!. I'll send you out another set of rubber feet this week(this means someone else got an extra one :P).

I'll get the size needed to remove the screws when I get home. Those are SAE(standard) screws and the thread is 4-40.

also, did you need to add some type of padding under your PCB?

Well, I will be doing this most likely, but I have a ton of high quality wool felt left over from a failed model F mat replacement experiment, so I plan to use that.

bumpon goes here. More nice machining! You can also see a screw

inside of the top case. It's thinner than the KMAC, and I love it.

Case bits. You can see the bumpons beneath the plate.

All soldered up and ready for keycaps!

I'll put some keycap / plate shots up when I replace the tai-hao with cherry :p

Recommend me a good image host and I will. I'm out of space on my imgur. I took lots more pictures.

Has anyone else built theirs? I've typed and gamed on it. White light switches are fantastic and sound great in the case.

It's very hard to pick up without the feet on it, as it wants to "stick" on the table from air friction. Cymbals have the same issue.

Flickr.  Pretty much unlimited space now.  Used to have a cap on visible photos for free accounts, but not anymore.  Just don't link with their official links: use the actual URL html links with {img}  {/img}.  Then it uploads to this site properly for zooming in.

Hard to describe without pictures, but in a nutshell my nitpicks are the cutouts of the upper half have some imperfections in the corners, the case doesn't feel totally sandblasted smooth, and I thought there would be more beveling on the edges, they are pretty sharp!

Everything else about it is just stunning.

Gottcha, The case wasn't sand blasted but was straight line sanded. Could have went a little wider with the corners. Thanks for the input!.

STill need to assemble mine, just been sitting here.

I actually think it looks amazing with those sharp angles and the noticeable sanding grooves--very industrial and very "heavy brick of metal".

Post by: r3dx on Fri, 06 December 2013, 16:14:09
I actually was surprised by the finish for this case because the material still felt so raw when I first pulled it out. It's kind of hard to describe but it makes it unique.

I like the feel of the raw-ish aluminum. It feels a lot different from the finish on my LZ-GH, which feels a lot more refined due to it probably being sandblasted and then hard anodized.

I'm still debating whether or not I want to put my Nixdorf switches on it or just order some clears from mechanicalkeyboards. Since TP has been MIA, I'm still lacking in a bunch of parts....

The cherry switches with clear housing tops.

I was considering putting clear housing tops in this, but decided to save it for a backlit keyboard.

Looking good, rindorbot!

I just got an email update saying mine was at my local post office and should be delivered any minute now!

Excited  ^-^

EDIT:

And just as I expected it arrived. My god this thing is amazing. Better than I hoped for and I had hoped for a lot!

Thanks for running this buy, boost, boiler, and anyone else who contributed. This case is a work of art. Simply perfect. Now to get building!

EDIT2:

So started building it and I just realised that I've been sent a plate with 7x space bar and not 6.25x

Loving my case.. except the stabilizer holes on the plates are a big small.. pinching my costair staibliers and making them useless.. will have to figure out how to grind the slots bigger while the thing is built...
