I'm reading through some hype that this will be the equivalent of a 7870..
I highly doubt this is true.
If you watched the PS4 announce stream,, the watchdog demo, which ran live, had tearing. which means vsync had been disabled.
What does this say... 2 things..
It can't maintain 60fps on what doesn't look to be a game using advanced lighting.. So this could be either a CPU limitation or a GPU limitation
Regardless... The game also wasn't running at high 1080p..
I'm quite convinced that all this SUPER ADVANCE graphics bs is just fluff, like when they promised ps3 to be awesome...
This gpu is extremely cut down.. far more than they'd like you to believe.

I don't care how it compares to a PC, it isn't designed to be a PC equivalent. I just want to play some casual games, use Netflix and maybe watch a few Blu-rays.

I just wanted to quash some hype that's all.
we're probably realistically looking at something close to a 7770 pushed really really hard...
-
But so what? No one is expecting it to fly.

I'm pretty sure everyone (http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=43899.0) here has already stated the next-gen consoles will be god damn awful compared to PC's.
-
It's not a PC. It's built like one, but other than that shares almost nothing else in common other than it plugs into a wall socket and can play some of the same games. Don't compare it to a PC.
Besides, I find mid-late game console titles to be so elegant and beautiful in what they are able to squeeze out of their rapidly aging hardware. PC games generally go with the technology flow and output what the current hardware is able to. Consoles have to adapt in a very different way to survive, and rely more on 'magic' tricks to continually impress. Plus no one wants to see another system on life support. Just looking at my Genesis with the Sega CD and 32X attached makes me cry on the inside. Although I certainly don't expect this coming gen to last as long as the last one. 10+ years is ridiculous.
-
Either way I think it will be fine. If you look at the hardware the 360 and PS3 are running on, and what they are capable of graphically, I think that it would be hard for it not to be a huge upgrade.
That said, I think I am just going to stick to the PC for this upcoming generation. The thing I was looking for is which unique features the consoles would offer, other than just improved graphics. To be honest, this disappointed a little bit. With everything going multiplatform anyway, I may as well stick to my preferred platform/input devices.

So wait... You used a demo of an unfinished multi-gen/multi-console game, as a way of judging a systems performance?
You sir, are a genious.

LOL, no just very experienced.
No vsync is a telltale sign of bad things to come.
I knew the ps3 gfx was crap when they were showing off "heavenly sword" on ps3
same sign, no vsync and you notice the tearing increase when there are more active items on the screen
My guess... is hopefully that this game is cpu bound... it's easier to overcome cpu bound than it is gpu bound... But I believe ps4 is lacking both..

I have not seen it, but ... are you sure that the tearing you describe is not just because the screen and the camera were out of sync?

absolutely... the tearing lines went away in less intense areas, and cropped up more during busy scenes.

Are you deranged? When have we seen launch titles ever get anything like the most of out any console? And how the **** do you manage to gauge the 'power' of the ps4 with a game that isn't even next gen exclusive let alone a ps4 exclusive... On top of that, the game isn't even out yet and it finished...
Yeah I guess I'm super 'butt hurt' about you 'face stomping' me online.... That's gotta be it... Right?

You fail to realize that this is not the same type of programming they were doing as on previous consoles.
This is all native stuff
on release, developers are already leveraging EVERYTHING this ps4 has...

THIS JUST IN: NEW CONSOLES NOT EXPECTED TO PERFORM UP TO PAR WITH PC'S - 7950 OUTPERFORMS 7770
Who would have guessed??

IDK why they don't just put in a 7970 and a 8320.. Charge $700, I guarantee people will still buy it... it'll probably be at a loss, of $100 each, but given how long the product life will be... that's nothing....
given their buying power, they might not even take a loss.
Why would it sell?
Because it's literally 5 times more powerful for less than double the price.

Heat issues. Also they would lose sales at that point to people who would just buy a PC.

Because the current console design totally maximizes cooling. I don't follow consoles (or pcs for that matter, just don't care about games in general), but I can tell you those things could easily be cooled way more with basic design changes.

No, heat is not an issue... PRICE is the issue..
My point is , given their market base, purchasing power, and product life cycle, the console makers could afford to gamble on a BEAST console.
If they actually put 7970 and a 8320 in a console.. I would never buy another PC for the next 5 years.. Because I KNOW... that thing can GAME THE ****... out of any desktop PC....
Programming close to the metal on a TOP END GPU... are you fcking kidding me... NO ONE would buy a gaming PC...

...when the economy wasn't mostly ****ed and Sony had a huge lead in both market and mind share they put out the PS3 with an insane processor that was suppose to be the future and be in everything and slapped on a super high price tag to go with it. How did that work out?
They start the next generation coming from behind (in the US mostly) trying to get proper 3rd party support from the get go, launching a super expensive (for a console) gaming PC would **** them becasue console gamers would buy a cheaper xbone and people who wanted a gaming PC would carry on buying PCs becasue console's aren't open systems....

The Cell wasn't an Insane processor.. Sony was trying to do MUCH more than a gaming console with PS3, it was to be a technology showcase, not only a gaming machine.. THIS is the reason it failed..
For what it can do extra with the Cell, it failed to cater to it's base market, kids who play video games
However, had they chosen to go Ultra powerful with a rounded PC processor, and a completely Gaming oriented GPU, the story would be much more different...

I highly doubt it, large parts of their target market doesn't really care what goes in their console as long as it runs the games well enough(30 fps seems to do it) and doesn't cost a whole lot.
Yes, lots of people might buy it if it had better hardware, but the increase in price would most likely lose them far more customers from the group of people who don't care.
-

Why would it?
Console gamers don't want a PC, they want a cheap, small box that will play games better than the cheap small box they already have... how would a much more expensive and bigger box accommodate?

30 fps at 720p? Man I am in AWE. 360 and PS3 graphics suck and have since day one.

Four of the highest end graphics card available and dual top end cpus.
You could beat it, but it would be expensive. Also, why bother for most people?
As for the console, it would still be totally worthless if you had to use a stock controller, no matter the specs. You could rig up 8 titans and four i7s and I woldn't touch it if i had to use the default control system.
Now if the default control was the first flawless laser mouse and a keyboard with a variant of hall effect that could detect exactly how far it was pressed, then it could beat computers control wise.
-

Aye I saw that too, heat is actually a huge issue don't act like it isn't.
Also if you put a 7970 in it then it will be too expensive for mommy and daddy to buy for their baby.

controller has its merits..
The problem is that people are stuck with the idea that gaming on a TV from a couch is different from gaming at a table in front of a monitor.

Since this thread is still going for some reason, I'll contribute to the conversation with as much relevance as it warrants. When giraffes were first brought to Rome in 46 B.C., they were thought to be as big as a camel, with spots like a leopard. Although we've long since learned the giraffe is not a combination of these animals, the name scientific name camelopardalis stuck. Like human fingerprints, each giraffe's coat is unique, and each adult can drink 12 gallons in one setting!

do you think there are giraffes that are scared of heights?
Being scared of heights would be relative...
If you mean to ask, are giraffes scared of heights that of which is as tall as it-itself is.. then obviously that's highly unlikely.
But if you jet-packed one up to a tall building and Held its head out facing the street with a gun to its face... You can bet it'll spew information on where the best leaves are at...

An armored giraffe with a scythe weapon and a jet pack would be an incredible opponent. I've long proposed this idea to Riot with much community support, but for some reason they still haven't implemented such a champion.

Obviously it would walk upright. He'd have to so he could wield his scythes. Maybe jet propelled boots, some kinda floating platform or retractable jet vents built into his armor.

I don't game on pc, but understand economics at a very basic level. If very very few people buy consoles, they will stop production. If no consoles are made, no exclusives will be.

If you wanna talk economics, You'd know that PC gaming is cheaper by far due to rampant piracy..

PC gaming is cheaper because publishers don't have to pay console licensing fees to Microsoft/Sony/Nintendo.
