Title: Model M...maybe taking the plunge.
Post by: ashort on Tue, 19 August 2008, 13:46:56
I am making a trip to Detroit to help a client move down the street.   Lots of fun technical details to be addressed when they do that.  The last time I was there, I found two Model M's collecting dust in the computer room (unplugged...in a box) and I am going to try to rescue them (legally) when I get there.  There might be 1 or 2 free Model M's for me.  =-D

Is that unplugged in the box as meaning NIB?

No.  No way NIB.  Not "NIB", "uiab".  ("used in a box")

Do it. I would always take a free Model M, and I have in the past. And this new one I have is the shizzie, so I think you might like to try one as well.

It wouldn't be NIB for long, because I wouldn't believe it was a real M.  =-D

Yes, new Model M's rock.

Especially new 84-key spacesavers.  ;)

AS far as 84 key space savers go, 15 year olds aren't too bad either

I found 1993 Lexmark model Ms new in the box on eBay last year -- guy had "quite a few" -- I bought two.  They were actually brand new.  I still have one in the box, never opened it.

Gee, I sure hope there's really a keyboard in there.

I saw that auction too. I have two of them already, but I still may pick one of them up.

Another gray label like the one I'm on right now just went for $152.50 American. Here: (this link won't be active forever)

I was thinking more along the lines of my Model M mini that was assembled just less than a year ago (Check it (http://geekhack.org/showthread.php?p=580))...but DANG!  New old stock 84-key spacesavers?  That is awesome!

If the majority of these don't go to geekhack members, I'll be very disappointed.  ;)

My problem with the SpaceSaver is it's not an M13 spacesaver.

Actually, as I've said before, my ideal spacesaver is an 87-key Model M2 (thin profile) with a TrackPoint. And make it a real TrackPoint IV, please, none of this force sensing resistor crap. ;)

AFAIK, the M13's are pretty much the same as the Endurapro's (same "force sensing resistor" trackpoint).  Maybe some earlier M13 models are different.

I agree that the current trackpoint's are the best and would be a great improvement over what is on the Endurapro's...but I think that if you are using one exclusively, you'd get used to it.  Switching back and forth between an Endurapro and a recent Thinkpad can be irritating since they are so different in feel.

If I had my school money already, I'd buy all of them. The seller didn't put Model M or clicky in the title, and they could go for a much higher price if one of us set up the auction. That one just went for $152.50 and it was used for the love of crap.

The only M13s that are the same as the EnduraPros are the ones made in 1999 or later, which are made by Unicomp. ;) Everything made by Lexmark or Maxi-Switch uses a genuine TrackPoint II, which uses a strain gauge.

It is rather irritating, although I do get used to it quickly, partially because OS X's pointer acceleration behavior is different from Windows, and it actually ends up making the FSR behave a little better. (I use the ThinkPad's built-in keyboard for most stuff, and use the EnduraPro on the Mac.)

You know what I am watching that auction as well, but at times I think at that price I might as well just go buy a Happy Hacking Keyboard (money isn't really the problem, just I can only buy one keyboard [for the time being that is]). The only thing that perplexes me is the color left to choose and which buying service... Geekstuff4u , benippon, crescent buying service... and the color either White with Print, white blank, or black blank, no offence but i think the black with the black print looks cheap to me... well at least the images online make it look that way.

-victheslik

I just ordered yesterday as well, and got the blank on black (I actually think the white one looks cheesy :D).

I've used beNippon before for my Filco, and now again for the HHKB Pro 2 - I've been very happy with them. Their listed price also seem to be a bit lower than geekstuff4u..

Yeah, just checked. beNippon was nearly $30 cheaper - I ended up paying $273.82 including the shipping (which is also faster, 3-5 business days, vs 10-15 at geekstuff4u!).

Didn't check out Crescent though...

I like the blank black best as well (of the available options for purchase)...primarily because the keys are all the same color.

I REALLY like my hybrid one.

It's your own fault, man. Since I first heard about your ****ty dinovo I've gone through about 8 keyboards buying and selling, but this is the first time my rotation has has been all new keyboards in a couple years.

Yeah, the white one really looks weird to me, I definitely don't like the blue keys along with it. The black font on blank keys doesn't seem that legible anyways, so I figured blank would be best (and keep anybody from using it hhehehe...)

It seems there's 3 or even 4 people around that just got one or about to get one - you know we are all going to be raving about it and then you'll want one anyways ;)

But yeah, I will post for sure - the brown cherries seem to come close in a way, so I'm really looking forward to trying out the HHKB Pro 2.

You really think the white with keys look cheesy eh? Hmm, well i guess if you look at it it looks quite clean, but since it shows all the hot keys and what not on the board i guess your right it does look cheesy, -

Well, you know what they say about opinions, but yeah, I really don't like the white one. Besides, a lot of vintage keyboards are white, so it's nice to have a cool looking quality keyboard that actually matches the rest of my hardware ;)
