Title: Ultimate Switch Tester R2 (US only)
Post by: hashbaz on Mon, 17 June 2013, 22:41:59
I decided to finally get around to doing round 2 of the ULTIMATE SWITCH TESTER TOUR.  Like the previous tour, this one will be USA only.  I'll cut off sign-ups after the first 10 register.  The round 1 thread (http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=39254.msg765888) is available for your perusal.

Rules:

1. Take care of the UST.  It's a community resource, so let's make it last as long as possible.
2. Make it snappy.  Send the UST on to the next person on the list within three days of receiving it.  I will PM you the next address as soon as I know you have it.
3. Ship the UST properly.  I believe it will fit in a medium size USPS Priority flat-rate box (confirmation pending).  This will cost you $11.35.  Don't sign up if you aren't willing to ship it this way.
4. Communicate.  Post in the thread when you've received the UST, and when you've shipped it.  If you'd like, post a review and say which switches you liked and why.

Optional (but encouraged): take a fun picture of the UST and post it in the thread.

Fancy sign-up form (https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1YJwj5xHJeVQf8bOuYsaDXce0EfWrq-wIj-WQZxsk3s4/viewform).

I tried this board in March and it was incredible. Talk about a quick way to try almost every MX switch ever. It helped me figure out I don't like Greys, Ergo-Clears, and Reds. And introduced me to the sexy that is ergo-Whites and Ghetto Greens. Plus, hashbaz is awesome! :D

CPTBadAss, you are too kind.  Thank BossBorot, who took the time and expense to make this wonder.  I'm just the tour administrator. :)

Yeah, I'm really excited to do this! So far I've only tried MX Blues & Greens, and I've learned that I much prefer the heavier springs in the Greens as opposed to the lighter springs in the Blues. With Blues I tend to bottom out on every key-press which seems to negatively impact how fast and effectively I type. Also, at least on my Blackwidow, the Blue switches on this thing have a lot of slop in each key, and not from the keycaps, but the actual stem itself has a lot of side to side play, whereas the MX Greens in my Storm Trigger are very robust and rock solid, which just gives it a much better feel overall when typing.

I signed up too. Thanks for doing this hashbaz, $11.35 is a heck of a lot easier on the wallet than the $2,000 plus it would cost to buy/build keyboards with all of these combinations! I'm especially curious to try out the rarer clear/white/gray/dark gray and the frankenswitches!

Signed up.
Also, whoops, I didn't see the thing about USPS at first and left a stupid note about how USPS should go to my home and FedEx/UPS should go to my office.
But actually, I've found that FedEx ground is sometimes cheaper depending on weight and shipping distance if you create an account on their website.

It's shame that it is US only.  :(

If you go over to http://deskthority.net/ or DT as it is better known around here, they have some tours that might be easier for you to get in on, being on the other side of the ocean! ;)

Small typo in the OP: Pricing for the postage is $12.35 not $11.35.
That said, I went ahead and signed up!

Hashbaz hasn't updated the OP with the recent signups, but by my count in this thread we're up to 8/10, unless some others have signed up but not posted. Better get in while the getting's good, people!

If you pay for postage online it's 11.35. 12.whatever is the post office price.

This seems quite a bit different than the tester from a year ago. I'd like to hop on this bandwagon.

I didn't vomit on the last one you sent, so I assume I'm still a candidate?

Sure!  Just fill out the form.

I'm not sure, BossBorot is the one who built the board.  Brown, blue, and red springs should be indistinguishable.

Yes. I have a review that talks about the UST here (http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=42669.0#post_UST). It links into my review on the Mr Interface Switch Try Bag (http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=41117.0) which is a bunch of loose switches. That Bag is out on my tour now. Link for the tour can be found here (http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=44312.msg915983#msg915983).

Came back from home with the pleasant surprise of coming home to the switch tester in my foyer XD. Gonna test it out for a couple of days and really get familiar with the switches and ship it promptly!

I really want a Filco now lol.

Quick review on the switches I am looking at to replace my reds on my poker xO

Clear unmodded:

Very satisfying bump. I don't need too much force to get past the bump but still resistant enough to not bottom out.

Ergo clears:

Definitely too light. Feels more like how the browns are supposed to feel, but to light. Bottomed out as if they were reds.

Panda Clears:

Like baby bear...just right. Bottomed out few but still feel the bump. Very satisfying.

Browns:

Clarified my decision to get reds. Not enough bump. Felt like there was a bit of resistance but not still not enough unf to the action. Still prefer my reds compared to the browns because reds just feel more of a complete switch compared to the browns.

Alrighty, so here is my grandiose impressions of all the switches presented to me from the Ultimate Switch Tester. Before I start, I'd like to take a second to thank Hashbaz for creating this tour to allow me and everybody else the opportunity to try the myriad of switch possibilities out there at very little to no expense!! I'd also like to thank Bossborot who as Hashbaz has said, took the time and expense to make this keyboard a possibility!!!

Here's how we're going to work this I'm going to break up this list into two sections, one section will contain the un-modified switches, and the other the modified switches. I will list each switch and the impression I got from that switch directly afterwards.  Now, it is pertinent for me to say that I only have personal experience with Cherry MX Blue & Green switches, so that's why I was so excited for this opportunity! Anyway, let's begin

ROUND ONE, FIGHT!!!! (Un-Modified Cherry-MX Switches)

Red: First time trying reds, and I have to say I don't hate it, but I don't particularly enjoy it either. The linearity of it combined with the lightness of the spring, it just doesn't do anything for me.

Blue: Been there, done that. Love the clickyness and sound of blues. Will say thought that I would prefer they were just a tad heavier.

Black: Same linearity as reds, but slightly heavier. Much more enjoyable than reds, would consider buying a keyboard with blacks.

Brown: Spent a lot of time on this one, really didn't feel all that different to me than reds do. The tactile bump doesn't seem pronounced to me at all, might have something to do with the lightness of the spring. Not crazy about this one.

Green: Using my CM Storm Trigger w/ Greens to type this review! Love green switches to death because they just feel so solid, and again, I love my clicky switches!

White: Wow, it's amazing that a switch with the same properties as greens can feel so different. They should nickname these switches "Muted Greens" because that's exactly what they sound like. Also feel lighter than greens do, which is weird because according to the GH Wiki, whites have a "very heavy" spring as opposed to greens "medium-heavy" spring.

Dark Grey:
Feels like a red but with much heavier spring. If you haven't noticed I have a thing for heavier springs, because heavier springs are for real men.... just kidding  :p. Would definitely consider buying a whole keyboard with these.

Grey: I can definitely feel the tactile bump on this one, other than that I like the actuation force, so same impressions as Dark Greys with this switch, would buy.

Clear: Feels like a lighter Dark Grey with a very pronounced tactile bump. I like it, would buy.

Toggle: Never knew they made Cherry Toggle switches. I want to point out something however. Apparently the Toggle switch with the lighter spring is to the left of the regular toggle switch... Well nothing for nothing but the one to the left that's supposedly lighter does not in fact, feel lighter than the regular toggle switch. I'd dare say it feels a lot heavier, so that just might be an error in the graph, or maybe I'm batsh*t insane who knows  :p

ROUND TWO, FIGHT!!!!! (Modified Switches)

Ergo Clear: Seen many of my fellow GH'er's running ergo-clears in their custom-built keyboards, so I'm a bit excited to see what all the buzz is about! Well the verdict is pretty simple, I do like them! Very crisp action on these, much like the Wiki says, but again, I do wish it was a tadddd heavier. Definitely wouldn't mind my very own ergo-clear board though!

Ghetto Red: Feels exactly like a red... nuff said.

Red w/ Black Spring: Feels exactly like a black.... nuff said

Red w/ Clear Spring: Feels a little heavier than reds....

Black w/ Clear Spring: Same as above...

Brown w/ Clear Spring: Not as crisp as ergo clears, feels sloppy like browns do.

Brown w/ Black Spring: Feels better than browns w/ clear springs, but still doesn't interest me.

Blue w/ Clear Spring: LOVE IT!!!! Love the sound it makes too, it's everything I love about blues, but with a slightly heavier spring.... LOVE IT! Nice and crisp too... NOMNOMNOM!

White w/ Clear Spring: Now see this is weird because now the click is more pronounced... with just a different spring? So weird man, but I really do like these, not as crisp as the blue w/ clear though.

Blue w/ Black Spring: LOVE! this a little more than the blue w/ clear spring.... I think I know what I'm going to mod my Pure Pro with now....  ^-^

White w/ Black Spring: The quiet man's blue w/ black spring, I love it!

ROUND THREE, FIGHT!!!! (B-B-B-B-B-B-B-B-B... BONUS ROUND!)

So what does it feel like to type on a board with a myriad of different switches on it? Well it feels really freaking weird let me tell you what! I mean obviously we aren't always typing at our fastest typing speed, so during those moments when you're slowly typing a word out, and you go to press that one letter, suddenly the switch you hit has COMPLETELY different properties than the last, and it just causes an odd feeling in the muscles of your hand.

Doing a quick test on www.10fastfingers.com solidifies something about myself that I already knew. It doesn't really matter which keyboard I'm typing on, I can generally type almost the same speed on every keyboard. What matters to me in terms of typing speed is the size and shape of the keycap, which can be a problem on some laptops and whatnot. Anyway, I managed a pretty speedy 109 words per minute on that 10fastfingers test, and could probably do better with subsequent tests.

Conclusions

So this was incredibly interesting I must say, and there's quite a few things I've learned from using the UST, so I'm just going to list them out.

-Will never buy a board with Red or Browns
-Love Ergo-Clears, given the money and resources I'd get my own board with ergo-clears
-LOVE LOVE LOVE! Blues with black springs, definitely going to mod my Pure Pro with black springs when I get the chance!
-Love me them White w/ black springs as well, would be nice to mod a board with these on them, and use it in the work-space
-Would consider buying a keyboard with Blacks, Dark Greys, or even Greys

ANNNNNNDDDD that's it ladies and gentlemen, hope you enjoyed the review! Thanks again to Hashbaz & Bossborot for making this possible! I will keep the board for another day or two and perhaps make changes to some of my impressions, and then ship it out to the next person!

PEACE OUT!

Blue with a Black Spring is a Ghetto Green switch. No need to mod your board to Greens unless you want 2 boards with Greens.

I think the black springs are a little lighter.
I swapped out the springs on a KBT Race with whites to black springs. I'm a fan.

Nope. That's how you make Ghetto Greens for sure (http://deskthority.net/wiki/Cherry_MX_Ghetto_Green). If you think they feel different from regular Greens, it's probably placebo.

And I'm going to swap Black springs into my Whites as well.

And I'm going to swap Black springs into my Whites as well.

Of what I know, the MX Black springs are weighted at 60cN as opposed to MX Greens 80cN. Blue's with the Black springs have just the right feel for me specifically. MX Greens, as much as I love them can be tad irksome to deal with sometimes due to the high actuation force, whereas from what I felt from the UST, Ghetto Greens are just pure actuation force nirvana.

That being said, you bring up a major point I didn't stress in my review, which is that the differences between some switches are so slight that it's hard to say you're actually feeling a "real" difference as opposed to the placebo effect from just knowing that they are in fact, different. But I will swear up and down that there is a real difference between Ghetto Greens & real MX Greens. Ghetto Greens are pure nirvana (for me) whereas real MX Greens are just really damn good, but not perfect.

If that made any sense at all  :p

Did you type on keyboards with full sets or use a switch tester when you tried them? I've found that it's a lot harder to tell the difference between similar switches if I'm not actually typing with them. I know that when I swapped the white springs for black springs I had a hard time telling on an individual key basis, but after typing for a while the difference was noticeable. But maybe that's just me.

Definitely a major consideration, but at least with the Ghetto Greens it was easier for me to tell the difference because I do in fact own a full MX Green keyboard, as well as two full MX Blue keyboards. The Ghetto Green really felt like it split the difference so to speak.

Like I said in my review, the main thing I learned is that I'll never buy a keyboard with MX Reds or Browns. It's not that I really loathe any particular switch, it's just that reds and browns just don't feel "interesting" to me at all. That being said, if someone gave me an MX Red board for free... I certainly wouldn't throw it out of bed for eating crackers....  :p

PEACE OUT!

I was going to write a review but then I read yours lol. Thought the exact same way with most except for the ergo-clears. They felt sloppy to me like they were sticking. The spring doesn't seem right for the switch. It felt like the spring from browns/reds.

After trying the board and messing with a Thermaltake at Microcenter today, I really wish I got black switches instead of red switches. It isn't so much the heavier spring, but more so that the switch feels smoother and really has that boobie feeling. I gave up on not bottoming out with these switches right now and instead just did a red silicone o-ring mod (large) and they feel better. The blacks probably feel like so much better with the mod, too.

Clears with black springs were almost perfect though. I cannot wait to do the 62g spring mod on clears and replace the red switches with them on my Poker. Noticed you didn't do a review of them.

I just remembered how the Ghetto Greens math works. So Blues actuate at 55 cN even though they use the same spring as Browns and Reds. So that means the 2-part stem adds about 10-15 cN. Black springs are 60 cN. So we get into the ballpark of 70 - 75 cN. Greens are rated at 80 cN but there is a tolerance band of I think 10-15 cN.

And you have to remember that the Ghetto Greens on that board have been typed on more than 20 people for extended periods of time. That board you're typing on Jack is probably new from CM and you're the only person to ever type on it so the wear/break in is different on your board versus the UST.

Hm, interesting. On a side note, I think it'd be an interesting angle for a manufacturer to certify their boards in such a way that it guarantees a very low actuation variance between each switch as well as guaranteeing that the characteristics of that switch type (clicky, tactile bump, etc) are present in every single switch. So in practice it'd be like "each switch in this board is guaranteed to to have no higher than a 2-3cN variance from the manufacturer's rated actuation force and all switch characteristics are guaranteed to be present."

Then again.... they'd probably charge out the arse for it.... but people would probably pay for it  ^-^

Actually, I've found USPS to be very efficient and trustworthy here. I sent an 18 pound package from Columbus to Belize for under $20. It made it there in 3 days. FedEx quoted me over $300 and told me it would take a week. Since then I've had a little more faith in USPS.

You're welcome, and thanks for the kind words Lastpilot! In reminiscing about my ever growing interest in mechanical keyboards I kind of realized that ignorance was bliss before I knew all that I know today about mechanical keyboards. When I built my computer I knew for a fact that I wanted one just by reading what little marketing information they used to describe them, and I really didn't know much about the differences between each switch so this made it really easy to purchase one because I just simply knew I wanted one. My first mechanical keyboard was the Blackwidow Ultimate (I know, I know ) and I kind of fell in love with MX Blues, so for subsequent purchases it made it really hard to justify spending money on a keyboard with different switches such as MX Blacks or Reds only to find out I wouldn't like them. I will say though that I didn't hesitate to buy the CM Storm Trigger with MX Greens because I love my clicky switches, but more importantly it was because my Blackwidow was on it's way out. Had I bought a keyboard with different switches for my first mechanical maybe I would have different preferences than I do today, who knows!

Anyway, thanks again for the opportunity to try all the switches GH!  ;)

Prior to receiving the UST, I'd tried out the following switches: Blue, Red, Green, and Brown.

I had ultimately decided on Browns as my favorite switch, with Red's coming in as a close second. I didn't have any major complaints about Blues aside from the audible click, which got to be a bit much at work. I found Greens to be too fatiguing to type on all day.

I think my top 5 after poking at this thing for awhile looks something like:
1. Ergo Clear
2. White w/ Light spring
3. Brown / Red / Ghetto Red
4. Blue with Black springs
5. Clear

I'm not really sure about those Clear's in the fifth spot though, as I think they might also get a little tiring after an extended amount of typing. Aside from that, I don't really like Blacks or any of the other switches with Black or Clear springs...but maybe I should give Clear w/ Black springs some more love :-\

It has been awesome to be able to check out all of these switches on the same board, so a huge thanks to hashbaz for arranging this, and BossBorot for building this awesome board. Now there just needs to be a Topre board tour ;)

Oh, and here's Big Daddy hanging out with the UST :))

So ended up doing a ergo-clear mod with 62g springs. Definitely different from the switches used on the ergo-clears on the UST. They feel between the brown springs and the black spring.

Thinking that the ergo-clears on the UST is a brown spring.

Right now these feel amazing. Not too heavy and not too light. I wonder how gold springs would feel like since I enjoy these so much.

No problem. Sent it out today. I'll PM with tracking.
More or less my thoughts, which I'll expand on later are primarily that it's really hard to tell which switches I like without typing on a board full of them.
However, I can see why people like the linear switches for gaming and the ergo clears seem nice, but they're light enough that if I were typing on them fast I don't think it would make much of a difference. With clears you don't really bottom out in my experience. On that note, the clears on this felt different than the clears on my FC660M.

All of the browns more or less feel linear. If I wanted that I'd just get reds or blacks. And maybe I will give those guys a try.

I think this also made me realize that while heavy switches feel nice to type on, for me that's only when I'm typing slowly. Lighter switches seem better for that.

Post by: phx on Thu, 01 August 2013, 00:22:46
had the board for a couple of days, here are my personal thoughts of each switch, in order of top to bottom, left to right.

TOP ROW:
White: slightly heavier version of the Blue but lighter than Green, interesting.
White w/Black Spring: takes a bit more force to click the switch compared to Green
Green: heavier version of Blue, nothing to really talk about here.
White w/Clear Spring: I would say this is identical to the Green.
Blue w/Black Spring: Feels like a gram heavier than the above.
Brown w/Clear Spring: heavier version of Brown, pretty neat, good for stiff switch lovers
Brown w/Black Spring: basically the same as above. If you like the black but wanna try some tactile go for these.

SECOND ROW:
Red: nothing much to say here, move along
Ghetto Red: same as Red, but ghetto-er
Clear: heavier version of the Brown with a LOT more noticeable tactile bump.
Black: heavier than Red, linear, blah blah blah
Red w/ Black Spring: reversed ghetto Red... feels the same as black
Red w/Clear Spring: feels the same as Black
Black w/Clear Spring: feels the same as Black

FOURTH ROW:
Blue: good old clicky
White w/Light Spring: feels a little heavier than the Blue, not as clicky as the Blu
Ergo Clear: the switch I was looking forward to trying the most. not sure how I feel about the super tactile feedback though. Definitely gonna try to make a board out of Ergo Clears.
Brown: Typing this review on my Brown, my daily driver switch, now you know why I want an Ergo Clear board.

BOTTOM ROW:
Grey: the heaviest spring on the board, gonna need uber powerful fingers to type on these. For a spacebar it's not that bad.
Dark Grey: Even heavier than the Black, a board made of this is a finger exerciser, not a keyboard.
Toggle w/Light Spring: Never tried a toggle switch before, pretty interesting.
Toggle: see above.
Clear w/Black Spring: feels about the same as clear.

My Conclusion:
- Will never use keyboard that has heavy springs on it. (black spring or clear spring)
- Green is actually a lot better than I expected, it is on the lighter side.
- MX White is something I can see myself type on, but they are so hard to find.
- Definitely gonna try to build an lubed Ergo Clear board
over all great fun experience, thanks hashbaz!

If by interest you mean having a great tour of the metropole that is Montréal, i can provide this fairly easy. Anyone who comes in Montréal and contact me beforehand, i'm willing to show you guys the funny spots (as we are a city mostly known for our party addiction and incredible places to visit).

Plus i can get fairly damn dank grass here. We're world reknown to have insane strains of that funny plant over here. I'll take care of the rolling and everything now worry.

Only thing i can't provide is a place to sleep :x. You'll need to book an hotel room (which we have many classy hotels here in Montréal, hookers available on demand, Ste-Cath Street after 11pm)

Just don't forget the ultimate switch tester %-) I'll use it for about an hour or two :p

If by interest you mean having a great tour of the metropole that is Montréal, i can provide this fairly easy. Anyone who comes in Montréal and contact me beforehand, i'm willing to show you guys the funny spots (as we are a city mostly known for our party addiction and incredible places to visit).

He meant instead of only having the board in CONUS, opening up the ultimate switch tester tour to be in Canada. Not physically coming to Montreal to bring you the tester.

Yeah that could work too but no one is going to get stoned with me for free :(.

I'm willing to pay shipping fees if any applies, and if possible someone tells me who i have to forward it too. I have multiples ways of forwarding an item in the mainland therefore i only need a name and an address to forward it to someone.

Ready to send out the keyboard, I just need the address of the next tester.

Here's my mini-review. I'm going to focus on the standard switches since I haven't tried a mechanical switch before.

Reds: Light switch. Doesn't feel like a rubber done like some people say.  Don't really like the linear feel. Can't see myself buying a board with these.

Blacks: Too heavy.  Again, dislike the linear feel.

Browns: The tactile bump is noticeable, but small.  I kinda like these switches and will probably buy my first board with these.

Clears: Definitely a more noticeable tactile feel.  Doesn't feel too heavy.  Now I'm torn between these and browns.
Ergo-clears: Love these.  If I could buy a board with these I would be very happy.

Blues: Love the clicky sound.   Definitely going to buy a board with these when I don't have to worry about bothering a roommate  :))

Greens: Too heavy like the clears.  Not  really considering it at this point.

White: Not clicky enough.  Also a tad on the heavier side.

Well if somehow somebody in the USA ships it to me i'll give you a hint and i'll put you next on list of no one minds here. That way you'll send it back to the US yourself no worries right?

C'mon USA-Geekhackers. You can lend your switch tester to your fellow Canadians neighbors right? I mean we're America's hat, we keep you warm 24/7 365 days a year, plus we bring you a friendly challenge when it comes to hockey.

And we gladly lend you cool stuff like Maple Syrup and Justin Bieber Friendship :D

Right? right? :[

Okay, I've finally had a chance to play with the UST for a while, and here are my impressions. Just to let you know where I'm coming from, I learned to type on an IBM Selectric in 1983, and I type a little over 100 WPM when I get up to full speed. My neighbor had a Model M with his original IBM PC-AT, which I really loved. So when I got the first PC of my own (a "clone" 386SX), I tried out all of the keyboards in the store until I found a nice, tactile, clicky keyboard that I really liked: the SIIG Suntouch. I didn't know anything about mechanical switches at the time, but I later found out that it had white Alps switches). I used that keyboard for about 12 years straight until the switches finally started wearing out. Afterward, I went through a succession of craptacular rubber dome keyboards, searching and searching for a suitable replacement for my dear departed keyboard. Fortunately I had my eyes opened when I discovered GH four years ago, and since then I've been using vintage Model Ms, various tactile Alps boards, and blue and green Cherry MX (Filco and Cooler Master QFR/QFS).

Needless to say, I'm a tactile switch man through and through, so I pretty much rejected all of the linear switches in the UST immediately, although I did give them a fair shot just to be thorough. If I were forced to use only a linear switch, I'd choose the blacks, just to give them some sensation of resistance.

So, in ascending order of preference, here are the switches I liked best in the UST:

Brown
Blue
Green/White/Blue with black spring/Blue with clear spring
Clear/Clear with black spring
Ergo clear

I am truly surprised by how much I liked the ergo clear switches. I thought for sure that I preferred heavier switches, since I like the Model M, and the green switches seem closer to that feel than the blues I had been using. But the ergo clears have that huge tactile bump, much bigger than any other Cherry switch, and it brings them right up into the ballpark "feel" of the Model M and white Alps switches that I love so much.

Now that I've said all that, I also realized that there's a huge difference between individually pressing keys lightly for "feel" versus typing at 100 WPM. With my typing style, honestly, even while writing this on the UST I don't feel a huge amount of difference between the keys except for the light versus heavier springs.

So, ultimately, I don't know if it would be worth it to me to go to the trouble of making my own ergo clear switches and replacing an entire board with them. However, if Cherry or a keyboard manufacturer ever marketed a keyboard with ergo clear switches, I would most definitely buy it.

Final thought: It's a shame no keyboards use those nifty toggle switches for Caps Lock, but of course I know that the Caps Lock "state" is not controlled by the keyboard but by the PC, so it just wouldn't work as expected, unfortunately.

Okay, my time with the UST has come to a close, so I'll be putting it in the mail tomorrow for ImperfectLink. Thanks again, hashbaz, for letting me be a part of this fun tour! I learned more about Cherry MX switches in 20 minutes of playing with them than I could have ever learned from reading alone!

Techno Trousers,

I would like to ask you in between the Blue/Green MX which one is your favorite? Because my next buy will most probably be a clicky board.

Also between Brown and Clear, which one would you say is your favorite?

Please add explainations if possible i will defenetly read it all Thanks.

Blues and greens are the same switch mechanism, so only the difference is their color and the weight of the spring inside. I tend to type energetically, so I like the green better than the blue since I bottom out less, and it just feels better to me overall. When I got back into mechanical keyboards a few years ago, I decided to try blues and used blue switch Filco boards exclusively for two years. During that time, I tried my best to lighten my typing style, but I kept consistently bottoming out, either because I'm too set in my ways, or there was just not enough tactility for me to feel the activation point when I am up to speed.

I didn't like the browns much at all, because they are very light, and there is almost no tactile feel in them at all to me. Clears are great, because they are heavy and have an even bigger tactile bump than the greens (although they feel pretty similar with the stock spring). The ergo clears (clears with light spring) were the biggest surprise because they still have a very large tactile bump, but are a lighter touch to activate. They almost feel like they should slot in between blues and greens in weight because of the bump. I suspect that when using ergo clears, I might be able to train myself to type with a lighter touch, since I'd be able to feel that big tactility even when going full speed. IMO, ergo clears are what browns should have been all along--they are exactly how I've always seen browns described (tactile, non-clicky). Ergo clears are really the closest feel to buckling spring of any of the Cherry switches, IMO.

I hope that helps!

Ok. I am therefore now looking for a Green Mx and Clear MX board. Cuz you know, when i read your previous post above i realise we have something in common; we both hit hard. I tend to bottom-out on all the board i have/had. Red was simply too light, blacks aren't so bad but i bottom out 50% of my type and i bottom brown hard!

I hardly bottom out at all with ergoclears. I bottom out hard on my ALPS and reds board, which is why I put o-rings to soften the bottom out with the reds. Bottoming out I guess isn't too big of a dilemma, but it feels really nice on ergoclears when you don't.

hum yeah, i believe it is optimal for you not to bottom out, as bottoming out makes you slower. Also hits the bottom of the switch, means faster wearing out i guess.

the closer you get to the actuation point, with an 100% accuraccy of getting it all the time, the best typist you will be.

I observe the opposite. Attempting to be lighter on the keys and not bottom out makes me so much slower. 101 WPM to 87 WPM on a quick unscientific attempt.

My first impression is that you could hand me a board with any one of these switches and I would adapt and use it without complaint. Since there are options, here is my unscientific evaluation.

Foreword:

I'm used to Cherry MX Browns and recently acquired a board with Reds and modified it with O rings. If you are new to mechanical keyboards like I am and do the research before buying your first board, I'd venture to say that you probably came to the same conclusion and bought  a board with Browns. After all, it is often touted as the best all-rounder. However, Browns actually turn out to be one of my least favorite switches on this board. More to follow.

A couple observations:

Once I start typing, I immediately notice that the grey switch in the spacebar is too heavy, causing me to mistype. I'm really enjoying the clicky keys but am a little wary of them with an infant sleeping in the next room.

Testing:

Sensation

Comparing Linear (Red, Black);

This switch type feels very clean compared to the others. I'm still bottoming out even with Black since it's the only feedback I'm getting. Blacks feel sturdy when spamming the key but Reds modified with O rings provide a better experience. I quite like them for all-round use but remember, I'm bottoming out 75% of the time so I rely on that bounce at the end of the stroke.

Comparing Tactile (Brown, Clear, ErgoClear);

I barely notice the tactile feedback on the browns. While that is not a bad thing, it doesn't differentiate itself enough from linear reds. Think of the feedback on the browns as a little scratch or resistant spot while the clears produce more of a "pulse" sensation. ErgoClears feel a bit like Browns but obviously with a Clear pulse. The weight of the spring in the stock clears seems to lend itself to the experience and the ErgoClear to me, feels like it has lost that. I definitely prefer the Clears. (Wife assessment - "I prefer the ones in the bottom middle (ErgoClear)")

Comparing Clicky (Blue, Green, White);

Damn I love that click but it's hard to justify the noise level. Audible feedback combined with tactile response greatly helps me bottom out less. If I could muffle the sound a bit, there would be harmony. Perhaps soft landing pads (as mentioned by CaptainBadass in his review) would help with the accoustics. This is not really a switch type for O rings. Stock Blues and Blues with Clear spring are my favorite in this category due to the weight. (Wife assessment - "They feel like I'm typing with long nails")

Weight

The 45g spring in Reds and Browns may be a tad light for me but still quite usable. Moving on to Blue (rated at 50g), spring weight feels the same but the tactile and audible feedback reduce bottoming out.

55g Clears feel great and are where I would stop. In what is obviously an illusion, I found it odd that stock Clears feel like they take less force than the same spring in a Red or Black switch. Perhaps due to me pressing the linear switches all the way down and half way in the tactile. I also like the Clear spring in the Blue and White switches.

60g in the Black feels a little heavy. I wouldn't want to spend too much time typing on these.

80g in Greens, Grays, Whites etc. are just too heavy. I miss keystrokes all over the place.

Conclusion:

Each switch presents its own ideals and its own target audience, so knowing what I do now which would I buy?. My taste seems to be very middling so I present you a list of switches in the order of my personal preference:

1 - Clear
2 - Blue or white with Clear spring
3 - Red (modified with O rings), Blue
3 - ErgoClear
4 - Brown (stock or Clear spring)
No Want - Black, White, Green, Gray, rest of heavies...

Using the Universal Switch Tester has been a very enlightening experience and I'm glad I had a chance to be a part of the tour. Thank you Hashbaz for making it available!

Blacks feel sturdy when spamming the key but Reds modified with O rings provide a better experience. I quite like them for all-round use but remember, I'm bottoming out 75% of the time so I rely on that bounce at the end of the stroke.

Comparing Tactile (Brown, Clear, ErgoClear);

Comparing Clicky (Blue, Green, White);

Love your review. Wait till you try 62g springs on Clears. The springs on the ergoclears on the UST definitely feel different than 62g springs. There is less of a stick and the weight feels just right. Not too heavy but not too light.

Are those Korean 62g springs? Where do you buy them? I've already been thinking that a weight partway between 55 and 80g with that big clear switch tactile bump would feel just about as good as an MX switch could ever be for me.

You can get quite a few different springs from originative.

Canadians push for it! This board really help me decide that I don't want browns and love clears and panda clears! Oh and the ergoclears are definitely clears with brown 45g spring and not the 62g korean springs. I didn't get to compare side by side but I definitely remembered that the 45g springs were stickier than using 62g springs.

Just to ease hashbaz work, we could already list up the canadians interested in the tour.

Should we start a thread or do it here?

I would love to get in on this but the last switch tester didn't so so well and this one is much more elaborate so I will have to decline.

I don't know if this is still going on, and I'm new to Geekhack, so maybe that disqualifies me.

But I'd love to get on the list (assuming there still is a list) if I could.

US citizen here, and I would like to try the tester. I've had no luck buying a set anywhere online (all are sold out).... :/  Am I missing the newer thread or did this one just die and a new one not get made?
