Title: the last of us review
Post by: Lanx on Tue, 18 June 2013, 08:59:06
so, this is the greatest game ever created for the ps3, and as far as i can tell the ps3/360 generation.

i got the game on the weekend, i played a bit to make sure my wife would want to play it too. I showed her the pic of how every magazine and review site gave it a 10/10, and the opening scene, she was hooked. I chose easy difficulty cuz of two things. while my wife has played games since she was 7, it is a majority of platformers/jrpg's and mmo. plus i wanted to get through the story in a weekend, (i read that the most dedicated ppl were able to beat it fast, those that got early review copies) i mean we all have lives to live and things to do right? so let's just finish it.

well it worked out in the end that she would play the journey part and her game OCD let her collect all the stuff that we needed while i watched, and she could finish off 1,2,3 enemies or so but when we knew she was gonna get zerged(mobbed) i took the controller, and she watched.

it was great, our playstyles were so different. she'd see some mobs(bad guys, we use mmo terms for every game now) and she'd shoot and snipe them. While i took a brick and ran into them knocking them out or stealth strangling them.

i'm not going to spoil anything but it's obvious it's an old man and young girl game from the picture cover, basically an escort mission... except the little girl is quite possibly the best ai/companion ever created. she's got a good voice actor and pulls you in but later on (skip this for minor spoiler stuff)

she yell's "joel to your left", "joel behind you" while you're in battle so she's like an ai situational awareness, or "he's got a gun"

then later on she grows that when you're in melee trouble, she'll jump on the bad guy and stab him.

then she'll learn to start throwing bottles at enemies and stunning them.

then she'll shoot em.

it was a great game for the both of us to play, the sound was excellent, with 3d sound we were like... "oh damn" actually once in a while you venture off into the woods, and i was like "do i have the windows open? oh damn that's just the sound"

i mean yea... the previous game i recently finished was bioshock infinate and i was like... bleh it's ok... twist was... blah and the escort ai was good, but "the last of us" ellie just blows away elizabeth out of the water (which is funny since the main character for both games uses the same mo-cap and voice actor)

i mean i LOVE to complain and criticize things, i LOVE it... the only thing i found wrong with "the last of us", is the upgrade system pertaining to the weapons really... in order to upgrade more levels of a gun/type you have to have a higher upgrade level, which is fine, but you only obtain this upgrade level by finding an object in the game, and for us... with two ppl watching the screen we only found 4 out of 5 level locks, so we couldn't upgrade our guns to the level 5 upgrade caps.

that's it, that's literally it.

Can I just agree with you? I know this is the internet and all, but I saw someone play through the first 20 minutes and I was like :O Tym wants, so Tym got and thoroughly enjoyed it! I hope there is some degree of expansion though :D

And although I loved Elizabeth, Ellie is better :D

Also I'm not critic so I just like things :P Maybe put *No Spoilers* in the title, because there arn't any!

Anyone enjoying the multiplayer version as much as I am? It reminds me of SOCOM from back in the PS2 days -- very, very tactical.

I saw a review of it and wow it looks good (other than some of the violence), but it's such a bummer being only for ps3. I would love to try it.

So I haven't purchased a game in awhile, and I have NEVER purchased a new game for my PS3 (I bought the older version I bought because it played PSX, PS2 and PS3 games, so I could have it to hit up some of the best games of the past generations that I never had a chance to), but the more I see this thread, and read about this game, the more I think I'm going to pick it up. Post-apocalyptic scenarios/fantasies are some of my favorite in any medium. But I just really love to live through them in video games. Fallout 3 and NV are probably my favorite games of all time.

Just so you know moose, those are just art's made by the devs. They don't represent the game. There are British "Landmarks" (sort of) they art is very similar to that which is in game though.

Aww, that would've been fun knowing there was real world landmarks. But even then, it still seems to be a good game.

"Some" of the violence? It's crazy, crazy violent. It makes sense for the story -- it's not gratuitous, but some of the kill animations are really gruesome. I didn't realize it was a PS3 exclusive.

I loved the Fallout games too, but TLOU has zero of the quirky humor in those titles -- fair warning.

I have to say I really think it's going way over the top to call this game best game of the generation, it's good but it's just Uncharted with characters you care about.

I finished the game on normal and was really dissapointed with basically every aspect of the gameplay. It's uncharted but with worse controls. Joel isn't Indiana Jones, which makes sense and I like how the controls are heavy and clunky (like I liked them in Killzone 2), but the FOV is so tight it brings everything down to a crawl because your constantaly scanning around.
I tried to stealth my way though the game, because the game seems to want you to at least try and do so, but in doing so (I at least) constantly got lost in buildings or would corner my self (while stealthily trying to get past some enemies) and then have no option but to shoot my way out.
The rest of the gameplay is equally as poor and it really REALLY suffers from horrible pacing... The difficulty spikes right at the start and then mid way though, and then at the last two rooms the rest of the game is a cake walk.
They also ****ed up the part were it's suppose to be a survival game, from what I can tell it's about as survivalist as Gears of War were you simply need ammo and grenades to 'survive'.

For me the gameplay was pretty bad, poorly balanced and just not thought out at all.

The story, wrighting, voice acting, art and world building though was some of the best the video games medium has ever seen. The opening sequence was just awesome, with a highlight for me the explosion you see on the TV and through the window. It was largely predictable but very well executed.

It's a great game really let down by lazy gameplay mechanics that were tired and heavily criticised in Uncharted 3 and almost nothing has changed in The Last of Us, which is a great shame indeed.

I also liked the mirror in the opening. I can't recall just seeing a mirror, or if I have, just one that worked so well/was so well done. I sat and stared in it for a bit.

yeah the world they created for the game is nothing short of stunning, it really is one of the major highlights.

I do agree that the gameplay is a bit simplistic, but for some reason, it just works for me. I don't mind a very slow pace. I can just walk around crouched and knock people off one by one. It was hard to begin, because I am so used to Gears of War, where I run in guns blazing, but they did make me pay a couple times, until I learned. Different strokes.

Thing is though, the combat was forced on you too much, so alot of it was guns blazing... least for me
