Title: Dell QuietKey Model RT7D5JTW ...impression
Post by: jksteger on Tue, 18 June 2013, 12:25:30
I had heard so much about this keyboard as being a really good RD keyboard.  I saw a seller on eBay selling these as still new in unopened box, PS2 interface with free shipping so I ponied up the cash and ordered myself one to see what it's all about.

The quality on these keyboards are very nice.  It has some weight and doesn't move around the desk at all!  I took a cap off and under the cap is a white slider that looks like one of the sliders I had on an old Compaq NMB keyboard from years ago.  The responsiveness of each key press is very nice to me.  They are not in the same league as a Topre switch but they are not meant to be.  They give a nice thud sound when bottomed out and since they are RD, you will need to bottom out.  This is not an issue for me.  Actually I read in awe when GeekHacker's talk about red mx keys and not bottoming out while typing.  I've never been able to do this but then again, I come from the Model M days and typewriters too!

So if you are looking for a good, no frills, rubber dome keyboard to keep as a spare or to use on a second PC or to even use as a daily driver for  office work, I would suggest this keyboard.  However, the name outright LIES "QuietKey"????   Only when you are not using it!!! LOL :)  The keys make a nice thud sound and it's quieter than a Model M or a clicky alps or MX blues but its not "quiet".  If you need quiet I would suggest a nice scissor switch keyboard to use late at night. :)  I keep my Apple Bluetooth mouse around for the 2am work at my home office.

thanks,
J.

I agree that this is a very nice rubber dome board. Others have recommended the seller and the deal.

I am curious what color domes you have, in case any of you decide to open up one out of this lot.

Hah, funny, I just found one of these in my closet. It was the keyboard given to me with my first PC  :)

Also, fohats, to answer your question I believe the domes are blue.

I have had these with light blue, dark blue, and yellow domes. They all felt about the same.

There's been one laying around in my local goodwill store for a while now (for $1.99 or something like that), and I did try it.  It felt nice, and was actually very soft and quiet.  But didn't feel that special.  But then, it's hard for me to feel good about rubber dome keyboards now.  I really do prefer the clean precise feel of MX switches a lot more, and rubber domes just don't do it for me now.

Yeah, these were light blue from what little I saw. Honestly, after coming from a mechanical keyboard, I'm not sure how I like the feel of the QuietKey. It's really, really mushy... lol.

I might throw it up on the forum for free one day, for science!

I'm typing on mine at work right now. Honestly it feels fantastic, especially for $20. Hopefully one day I'll be able to smack some Topre switches for comparison.

Even though I haven't owned a QuietKey in a long time, I can also confirm that they are absolutely fantastic to type on (especially for domes). They're not even remotely quiet, but they're still very nice.

Do you know if the sliders are Alps keycap compatible? Or is it just proprietary?

They're NMB proprietary. IIRC you can swap with other NMB dome-slider keyboards.

I had a Dell SK-6000 ergo rubber dome once and those had Alps-compatible sliders.
