Title: Simple IQ Test 1
Post by: Endzone on Sat, 22 June 2013, 01:36:30
In the diagram below, if a car averages 30MPH going uphill for the first half mile, what must be its average downhill speed for the 2nd 1/2 mile in order to average 60MPH for the entire mile?  The hill is perfectly symmetric even though it isn't quite drawn that way.

(30+X)/2=60
(30+X)=120
X=90

What is the purpose of this if I may ask?

It's just something for fun.  An officer showed me this when I worked on the ships and claims he got a 1600 on his SAT test.  But it's not really that tough to solve.  Your answer is incorrect, but thanks for giving it a shot.

Isn't possible

1 mile total distance. 60MPH average. Car would have to travel that mile in one minute.

The car travels 30MPH for the first 1/2 mile which takes a minute. Therefore he'd have to travel that second 1/2 mile in 0 seconds in order to have a 60 MPH average.

The first equation "(30+X)/2=60" would be:

(30 miles/hour + x miles/hour)/2 miles = 60 miles /hour

which is

15/hours + x/2 hours = 60 miles/hour.

Note the inconsistent unit of miles instead of miles per hour.

(This is probably wrong.  It's after 3 am here :P )

Heh, past 9AM in Sweden atm, and I haven't gone to sleep yet because of midsummer festivities. Still somewhat disappointed though.

Next question!

If a baseball and a bat cost 1.10 together and the bat costs 1.00 more than the ball how much does the ball cost?
