Title: The Movie Thread

Watched couple of movies lately, just want to share some of the very exceptional ones: Stardust, The Illusionist, and Cloud Atlas, very well made movie with wonderful storyline.

I have a lot of time during the summer, open for any good movie suggestion!  :p

I just saw Oz the Great and Powerful and was horribly disappointed, not to mention bored most the moving.  The acting was horrible as was the pacing.

I'm bloody excited to see oblivion, the lone ranger, man of steel, elysium, the new percy jackson movie and pacific rim man. Poor I can't afford to go to the movies :D

If you liked illusionist, the prestige blows it out of the water, also John Carter is a great movie.

Oh judging by the storyline it looks pretty sweet. Now we play the waiting game til it comes to dvd or interwebs :P Can't wait for the new rid**** movie and sequel to the hobbit. I'm really angry how they tried lengthening the story into a trilogy and now they pretty much made the first movie so incredibly lackluster u_u

Did you watch the English dubbed version or the original Japanese language + English sub version? I'd seen the English (or US) dubbed version initially and believed that the one Itto Ogami was hired to assassinate was the Shogun's brother. Turned out, after watching the original Jap version (with English sub) that the target wasn't the Shogun's brother, he was a defector from the fiefdom who knew the secret to some dyeing process (or something like that) and he was defecting to the Shogun, and the economy of that fief depended on it staying a secret. I watched it and went, "Geez, the English dubbed version totally changed the basic storyline".

There are actually six (that I could find) in the Lone Wolf and Cub series:
Sword of Vengeance
Baby cart at the River Styx
Baby cart to Hades
Baby Cart in Peril
Baby Cart in the Land of Demons
White Heaven in Hell

If you like Lone Wold series, you should check out Shintaro Katsu's portrayal of The Blind Swordsman in Darkness is his Ally circa 1989......excellent Ronin movie  but with a somewhat convoluted storyline. Like 'Shogun Assassin' there is some gore and nudity.

There is another The Blind Swordsman portrayed by Takeshi Kitano done in 2003, it's a passable time filler......

I'm watching Face/Off for the first time right now. Oh. My. God. This film is amazing. It not only encompasses every single '90s action movie cliche in the first 15 minutes, but it pushes the envelope of absurdity and 'been done' so hard it stands alone in it's own category far above movies like Broken Arrow, Die Hard, Speed, and Backdraft which obviously take themselves too seriously. This movie is amazing, I haven't laughed this hard since I was a little girl. Do watch!

I am with you on this one.  For those of you that watch this and are confused, go watch some old Jacques Cousteau documentaries and re-watch it.  This movie is one of my all time favorites, and I still want some Team Zissu Pumas.

Favorites for me of all time:
Aliens - I have watched this more times than I would care to admit.  The directors cut makes it even better.

The Matrix (the second and third are just meh)

Ghost in the Shell

Caddy Shack
Blade Runner - just watched it again the other night.  Still good to this day.

Tron - I actually like both of them equally, but the music in the new one really makes it good.

Looking forward to seeing Ender's Game - just to see how well they adapt the novel. I'm sure they'll screw it up, but one can hope. The trailer looks good though.

have you read the book?

if so, do they just focus on one story? by the looks of the trailer, it seems like the movie revolves around the battle of yonkers.

i think if HBO picked this up as a series it could have been done much better, because they could have focused on all the individual stories about the war. just like the book.

Whoa Nellie, I didn't know there was even such a movie! :-[ Looks good, but being made for 'young adults', I'd hate that it be a PG rated movie, way too many of those. Like The Hunger Games, way watered down compared to the book....and Taken 2, it got 'PG'ed" and I wasn't interested in watching it at all.

The Ender series is probably my favorite novel series in Sci-Fi with the Hyperion Cantos from Dan Simmons in close second.

Got a question for you guys in the US, why did Pacific Rim NOT do well in the US? Lack of big name US actors/actresses? It's a hella movie, great mecha/gaiju slug fest, awesome CGI, but only passable storyline, it's doing pretty well in Asia, and most parts of the world, I do not get why it isn't a resounding success in the US as it should be. Must it be a sequel or a reboot movie to do well in the US?

Maybe the US market wants films based on well established IPs made by executives ticking off a checklist, rather than a project of passion.

Really, just looking at the visuals in Pacific Rim you can see the passion put into it by del Toro and the artists he uses. Yes, the story isn't all that much, but just the sheer scale of it all and the passion put into the design of it makes it one of the most enjoyable films I have ever seen.

Fingers crossed that Pacific Rim does well enough that someone gets their eyes up and start funding At The Mountains of Madness again.
