Title: Black, blank, thick PBT keycaps?
Post by: noping on Sun, 07 July 2013, 18:09:05
Is there somewhere that I can buy blank, black, thick PBT keycaps? A quick search on Google seems to show that they don't exist. All I can seem to find are:
I found a thread elsewhere on GH where posters said that there's "no such thing" but with no explanation as to why they supposedly don't exist (and subsequently flaming the OP for asking). If white-on-black thick PBT keycaps exist, is there some reason as to why manufacturers can't simply not print text on them?

Is there someone out there that I can pay to do a custom run of two sets? (Cost is not an issue.)

I've been looking for blank OEM PBTs, but no luck. :(

  • black thick PBT keycaps (but printed)
  • blank black PBT keycaps (but thin)
  • blank thick PBT keycaps (but not black)

Have you tried pm'ing imsto?

Cost is a massive issue! Most manufacturers have MOQ's, which can essentially run into $1000's. The cost is typically alleviated using group buys, I.e. e.g. 500 sets x $50 a set. See group buy section for examples.

I'll try PM'ing imsto, thanks for the idea.

I'm just confused as to why blanks aren't an option if printed keycaps are. For example, I see that there's a groupbuy for a set of 104/105 PBT dyesubs but there's no option for black blanks but there are for white blanks. If a manufacturer gets an order for 500 printed black keys for example, is there some reason they can't make 501, send 500 off to be printed, and then set the extra set aside, unprinted?

You can't dyesub black pbt, which is why imsto doesn't have it. All his sets come blank or dyesub.

You can, kinda. (http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vortex-105-PBT-black-black-sub-dye-key-caps-Cherry-MX-switches-keyboards-/290920986173?pt=PCA_Mice_Trackballs&hash=item43bc3df63d) More a black on dark gray.

I was going to try getting Cherry profile 'black' or more like very dark charcoal grey for next time in round 3. You can only dyesub a darker color than the PBT for it to show up at all.
