I saw a post of a beige cherry keyboard and liked the look of it, very classic yet i'd still be able to stick on my own keycaps, unlike my Model M. It was a g80-3000. I've seen a g81-3000 as well, and I'd like to know the difference between the two. Also, if any of you have another recommendation, I'd like to hear it c:

AFAIK, the G81-3000 uses MY switches and the G80-3000 uses MX switches. That's a pretty big difference, even though X is just one letter away from Y in the alphabet.
Fun fact: If you say out loud "MX MY MX MY" a bunch fast, it sounds like "gullible". More info on this phenomenon can be found here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dQw4w9WgXcQ).

G81 = Cherry MY switches (cheaper, less desirable)
G80 = Cherry MX switches
G80-3000 are the current full-size Cherry standard. New ones are 2KRO and all laser-etched PBT keycaps. The G80 series are also mostly PCB-mounted switches and feel flimsy compared to plate-mounted switches (almost every other board available).
Recommendations really depend on how much you want to spend on a keyboard. I would recommend one of the limited Ducky DK9008G2Pro PBT keyboards which are full-size and feature gorgeous thick dye-sublimated PBT keycaps which will likely last forever.

(beige/white and grey/blue keycap versions also available)

Yessss.... and it was MINE!

G80 all the way, stay away from G81
EDIT: BTW look for the later versions of the g80 3000, it will be USB plug with 6KRO, what were the last 4 digits for the one with 6KRO?
2nd edit LOL: what you want is G80-3494

Ugh... What is this? An on topic post!?!?
That said, I agree.

although keep in mind the G80 3494 has a flat profile and some other idiosyncrasies that make it unique. I don't think I'd call it a "classic" look.
(lets keep it on topic, everyone. Off topic posts belong in the off topic forum)

G80s are really light weight keyboards, and kind of feel like toys compared to a plate mounted board. However, they are super easy to mod.

My G80-1192HAG certainly isn't light or toy feeling. It's very heavy! It's pcb mounted switches but it has a huge metal plate in the back that gives it a lot of weight. It's one of my favourite boards to type on.

I have 2 3494's, one with stock reds and one with Grey 39's. I also have a 3000 with clears. The only boards in my personal collection are Cherry Corp and IBM. Don't let anyone tell you that Cherry Corp boards are bad, they're just different than all those other OEM brand boards that other's prefer. A 3494 is n-key rollover when connected via PS/2, and 6-key rollover when connected via USB. If you get a cherry corp board a 3494 is an excellent first board.

What the... did someone edit out the Princess Cadence from my post?!?!

I have one of the recent G80-3000 with lasered keys and Cherry MX Clears, and though there's nothing really bad about it, it just doesn't compare to the vintage Cherry G80-3000 (with 3 letters after 3000, instead of 5 - I also have a G80-3000 HFU).
The new ones feel rather flimsy and I have an impression they use a worse quality plastic for the case. But still they're one of the cheapest mechanicals you can get, at least in Europe and they're great for modding or as switch donors. If you want a nice Cherry keyboard, get a vintage G80, if you want a Cherry keyboard, get a new G80;)

Wait a second.... new Cherry keyboards are 2KRO...?

Yes generally they are all 2KRO post 1000 series with a few exceptions like the 3494, 1865, and a few others. Some earlier production 3000 can be found with NKRO but it is an exception. I agree wholly that the newer ZF era 3000 do feel a LOT cheaper than the older ones. I am certain the casebodys are thinner and use a lighter plastic which allows for much more flex. It's an easy thing to fix though with underplate mod where you take a G81 switchplate and put it under the MX PCB. Generally G81 are not worth buying except for harvesting doubleshot, dyesub keycaps and special casebodys.
I would also recommend trying to find a nicer vintage one from used or new old stock before settling for a current production new model. More priority on finding older models with codes like HFU, SAU, SAD, HGD, etc so you get the best keycaps you can with it from the start. Don't worry as much about the switch type or the interface to get better deals. They can be modded quite easily to change switch type or change cable from AT to PS/2 etc.
