Title: Tapatalk Push Notifications
Post by: mashby on Sat, 13 July 2013, 17:17:13
I know this works on Android, but for whatever reason it doesn't work on the iPhone for this forum. I don't know if it's a setting, or an additional plugin, but the push notifications work on DT, so I figured I'd ask.  :-*

I, like everybody sure would like that feature. DT uses vBulletin and GH uses Simple Machines forum software. I know it depends on what version forum software and a few other parameters for some features to work. Would be uber-cool for my iPhone to let me know when you guys are up to no good with a little "ding-DONG-ding!"

You guys just need to stop drinking the Apple Kool-Aid, and get on board with a real OS. ;))

Yeah, I would like this as well. I get the attached when trying to enable push notifications for GH.

Edit: this is from the forum overview > settings > notifications & sync

Yes, Android has had support for Push for some time now. Just don't know what's required for iOS support to be added.

Hi mod, I ask the Tapatalk dev on the lack of push notification and they took a look at GH and told me that the plugin is out of date. What's the possibilities of updating the plugin please?

I think rkinze handles that, he hasn't been around much or at least not posting, everyone is too busy :(

Whether it's because I've just run Tapatalk on iOS for the first time in months or not, or maybe it's the changes referred to above, but suddenly I'm getting notifications of new posts in threads I have subscribed to.

This is nice.

But ... will I still receive email notification too?

I'm at work atm, and it's nice to catch up with the emails and hence unread threads when I get home.

The reason why we get notifications in Tapatalk iOS is because rknize has just updated the Tapatalk plug-in in the GH forum servers to the latest, which fix notifications error to Tapatalk. So, it is independent from the email notification, which is the forum software. So, yeah, you will get emails too.

So, one interesting thing I found is that Tapatalk does not do notifications on subscribed forums. Meaning if someone creates a new thread or reply to one in a forum, there is no notification.

Similar forum software eg in Deskthority does support it.

So I'm wondering if it's a settings in GH plugin.

Eg GH:

Same page for Deskthority.. Notice it has both subscribe topic AND forum.

Edit: fixed

Stuff is working with Tapatalk Pro…nice. It will allow me to be updated and harass you guys when a topic is hot. I don't notice a lot of difference between Tapatalk Pro and Tapatalk Free.

Thanks for the update, long overdue.

I'm wondering how often the Tapatalk notifications are generated.

If I click the NOTIFY button, I get an email if someone posts in that thread.  I get no further emails for that thread until I visit the thread.  Then I get one more email the next time someone posts there.

Tapatalk seems to send me a notification each time someone posts in such a thread, whether I visit it or not.  I don't use Tapatalk much, and I'm up to 333 notifications.

Does Tapatalk just keep sending, regardless of whether you visit the thread or not?

That's a possibility, but I kinda assumed they would be like the email notifications - you get one, then nothing until after you visit that thread again.

Yes, that is an option in the notification setting. What I don't get is what does "mention me" means?
e.g. @Spamray @SpAmRaY does nothing I guess.

You get it every time the thread is answered by someone, in real time. It gets irritating. So I remove myself from being informed of thread updates, only when someone quoted me.

But I'd REALLY like to be notified when the forum I subscribed is updated e.g. Bro Caps forum. That seemed to be missing in GH per my earlier post.

So, I am wondering if there are plans to have push notification for "Subscribed forum", meaning if it is turned on, we get notified when there are updates to a forum. Very useful for those artisan forums :)

I just notice a bug with Tapatalk and asked the dev. The bug is with the Participated tab, or Watched. It does not sort by thread that was recently replied anymore. The dev responded that the plug in was outdated.

I didn't notice it, but that would explain why I was confused with some topics appearing before others.

Also, my notifications don't work anymore. I may get one or two a day that sync properly, but the rest never appear.

Yeah the notification has been wonky lately, especially PMs. I got some notified through the actual notification tab (and therefore got the push notification), but some just stayed in the message tab inside the followed forums thingy and never got notification for those.

It's working well for me in android as well.

Anyone having trouble should make sure you're running the latest Tapatalk client, by searching for it on the Play Store and comparing the name and version with your installed version. I've had to manually remove and reinstall the Tapatalk client at least twice, because they keep "reimagining" the app. Basically, they just abandon their previous Play store app, and create a new one, also named Tapatalk. There's no in-app notification of this in obsolete clients, so the only way you'd know is if you happened to get an email from them, or you manually search. It's extremely annoying to say the least.

The last time I let tapatalk upgrade itself it was awful, nothing worked right and everything was changed so I rolled back to the last stable version. I'm currently using version 4.9.5

The version I'm running is 5.3.6. It seems stable, and the notifications are working well. After the GH update to the latest plugin, I'm even getting notified of new posts in my subscribed forums. I don't think that feature was ever working for me in the past.

A lot has been fixed, but the notifications still aren't perfectly synced like before. Most of them show up, but a bit delayed.

ha ha ha .. well, it is the lesser of two evil. On iOS, it defaults to the system font, which is the new beautiful San Francisco font used in iOS 9. I can't complain when they are truly going towards the right direction, so I will bear with it. I still have the old Pro app, but that now looked seriously dated on a modern phone and iOS.

Do we have control over PM notifications? I always liked when it told me the Subject of the PM, in addition to the sender. It let me know if it was something mod related (and therefore more urgent) or personal. I always assumed that was a Tapatalk update that removed it, but maybe we could add it back? If others would be okay with it, of course.
