I want to enter the world of modding, and the first things I want to are paint/recolor my case in some way, and add backlighting. I know one is possible, but is the other?

It's not impossible but it would require a ton of work, a custom PCB or direct wiring. So pretty much no. On keyboards like the Pure or the Poker 2 it's possible because there are (or will be) backlit versions, so the PCB already has the holes etc. for the LEDs. You could do something with EL wire though, there's a thread about some people trying that.

Ah, I was afraid this was the case. I'll have to just stick to painting it then :D

You'll need a lot of creativity and modding skills, otherwise it won't be possible. There's just no place to insert LEDs through the switches, and even if you can, you'll have to worry about how to power them.
