Title: Found this at Goodwill
Post by: SkyCorrigan on Mon, 15 July 2013, 21:06:45
I was at my local Goodwill and I came across this little guy. Couldn't find much info on it, but it has Cherry mx key caps and a strange cherry switch I've never seen.

Those are Cherry MY. Really horrible switches but great caps. Maybe lasered or dye-subbed. I can't tell.

Caps will fit on MX stems/caps.

The L in the model number means lasered if I'm not mistaken and the keycaps may be PBT. The ones on the Cherry board I just sold (in my sig) are. Take a keycap off and look at the under side. It will say PBT if they are.

The switches feel terrible and mushy. The keyboard looks like it was never used...hey PBT!

Remove the springs from MY and they are not as horrible to use. Keycaps are worth the price for sure. As you discovered the stabilized keys are a little 'special'. You should be able to use them with costar stabilizer after clipping the corner pegs off. All the bottom row mods are also 'special' and are not useable. By 'special' I mean ****tarded.

Wouldn't the switches stop working if I removed the spring?

yes

No, there is a double spring system if I remember. Without springs they are extremely light and still useable, but I didn't like them.

I hate those legs on the big keys, I wish they were all MX compatible.

Where do you live?

Goodwill stores around Atlanta do not sell computer gear. A manager told me that "real" computer stores made them stop competing.

Right there is a helical spring, and a leaf. The leaf makes the press register, the helical spring only adds force and is not necessary for functioning.

Charity thrift stores in my area don't do PC stuff either. But it was not because of complaints from regular retail stores, and really why would they care they are a charity and that is just total crap. The reason they don't here is because people left too much non functional stuff and the ewaste fees were hurting them too much. I imagine that is probably the real reasons in many other places as well when they don't.

Probably true, but this was at a big clean high-end Goodwill about 1.5 miles from a Micro Center.

Probably a decision made at an "area" or "regional" level.

Like everything at thrift stores, you have to pick through 99% worn-out junk to find the occasional gem.

I live in Chicago roughly a mile away from a Tiger Direct store. So they must not have a problem. There is so much computer stuff there is unreal. I found an old Voodoo card a couple weeks ago. At least 20 first gen lcd monitors, 10 keyboards, mice, and a handful of peripherals.

Maybe lasered or dye-subbed. I can't tell.
That is a relatively recent keyboard. All dye-sub Cherry keyboards made were in a beige/grey colour scheme without windows keys.

Great price for it anyhow!  BTW, the case is identical to G80-3000 with Cherry MX/windows keys.
Myself, I have bought two G81-3000 and a G81-8008 just to harvest the lasered PBT caps ...
