Title: Things (average) People Say About Your Keyboard(s)
Post by: oTurtlez on Wed, 17 July 2013, 13:12:50
What do people say about your board(s)?

I most commonly get a "That thing looks ancient" or "That's an oldschool keyboard" about my 103u at work. When I had CCnG on my Pure people would also tell me that it looked really old.

A KBT PURE. TINY 60% BOARD. GREEN AND WHITE(ish) KEYS. OLD LOOKING.

wat.

Someone one asked me if I was supporting breast cancer when I had the Valentine's set on my Filco. When I changed it to Red Alert, I was asked why I had the same keyboard with different colors on it.

People usually just look and go, 'Oh you got another keyboard, huh?'

A guy at work asked if I had a Dvorak once because he saw the extra print on the front of my FC660C's caps. At least he knows that Dvorak exists I guess.

This, for me too. ^^

Another common one is "Wow, it's so {loud, clicky, snappy}".  Usually said with a positive intonation.

My coworkers make fun of me of me more for using an IR thermometer and grinding beans when I make coffee every morning, if they mention anything about my keyboard it's usually something along the lines of "oh wow, another eh?"

"Why do you need to spend so much on a keyboard, my cheap one works fine"

When I tell them about how solid the keyboard is, this is what I get, "A brick is solid"

People in India are used to $3 keyboards, noone understands mechs and the obsession.

Oh, and when I showed someone the Ergodox and how I was planning on making it, this is what I got, "IF you get that keyboard, how will we type on your computer?"  ^-^

My OH yesterday when I tried to get him to use the ergo-Clear Filco again:

"I like my old wireless [5-year-old-crappy] Logitech... this one's not even wireless."
--"but you don't move the keyboard around that much on your desk"
"sometimes I move it a bit.  Plus it looks nicer to not have the cord"
--"but this one has a cool looking braided cord"
"and it feels weird to not have a numpad!  I'm used to hitting the right-most Enter key.  Now I have to move my right hand off the mouse to hit Enter."
"shouldn't I be able to tell right away if I like it over my rubber dome keyboards? Why do I need to try it for a while?"
at that point I was facepalming...  He probably felt obligated to use it for the rest of the night, so we'll see =/

I generally agree, although my wife is a professional editor who types thousands of words a day at blinding speed, and considers her new (whatever that is, today, never more than 24 months old) paper-thin Apple keyboard to be the best thing available anywhere.

She hates my big old clunky keyboards.

Although I have my reasons to like what I like, I must admit that she types more, and faster, than I do, all day long.

Her opinion cannot be discounted, and a strong case could be made that her preferences are more valid than mine.

Given your preference for tougher buckling springs keyboards, maybe she hasn't had a chance to try some of the softer switches?  Perhaps she'd end up liking more "floaty" switches, such as Browns and Blues for fast typing.

I don't even notice moving my right hand, as I never really used the numpad anyway, which is why I switched to TKLs entirely.  I never enter numbers in a spreadsheet fashion, they're usually mixed with letters for coding.  I don't think my OH uses the numpad much either... but apparently that Enter key is a big deal!

I keep mice on both sides, and go to whichever one is most convenient.

When I am doing numbers on the numpad, I am using the left mouse.

I doubt it. I think that "float" is what she does not like. The Apple keys are dead flat and the throw is extremely short.

I learned to type on a manual typewriter, so each stroke is a "thrust and stab" for me.

"it feels like any other keyboards..... my macbook pro feels so much better"
which keyboard was it?

KBTalking Pro, the bluetooth one, with Clear stems and 62g korean springs and lubed. also i painted the case to bright yellow.
so the macbook pro keyboard feels better than lubed ergo clears? what a bullsh!t.

i absolutely prefer scissor switch boards (even apple, though im not a big fan of the flat keys) to lubed ergo clears. those  feel really mushy to me.

Wouldn't that be a function of which springs were used?  "ergo-Clears" is a pretty wide range of springs: 55g, 60g, 62g, 65g.  They all feel different.  (I know because I tested all of those)

That is how I type on it. I have a color system on my QFR. By color system, I mean I put a bunch of keys from a crap bag on it.

yeah, I thought Ergo-clears only refers to clear stems + stock brown or red or blue springs, I actually dont like the feel of the ergo clears, but absolutely love the clear stem with 62g springs.

That's actually called Ergo Clear. Most people use 62g or 65g springs in their Ergo Clears, basically everything that's lighter than a Panda Clear you could call Ergo Clear.

I work 95% from home so i don't get daily comments exception from my wife and best friend. I do share my collection on Facebook and get mostly silence.

<insert forever alone meme>

My keyboard collection though is not a secret to my coworkers in another state. Every time i have visited the main office in the last year i have brought a new keyboard. By the 3rd visit, people started to realize i may have an obsession with keyboards.

visits 1 and 5: comments on the HHKB
"where are all the keys?"
"what does the skull [clack] mean?"
"Is that a hacking keyboard?" (a "holy ****" moment for me)
"this one is so much quieter than those other ones"

visit 2: comments on the RACE with White switches
*tries out keyboard* - "how could anyone like how that feels?"
"what does mechanical keyboard mean?"
"why is it so loud"
*asks how much it costs* - "why would you spend so much money?"

visits 3 and 4: comments on the poker stock and then next visit with klaxon key caps and pure aluminium case
"what makes that keyboard so special?"
"why cant you just use the keyboard on your laptop?"
"love that keyboard Phil"
"How many keyboards do you own?"
"where can i get those key caps?" "I don't know what mechanical means"

visit 6: comments on the ergodox (acrylic, clear, DSA/DCS cap Mix, kinesis lift for tent)
"what the hell"
"why is it split like that?"
"is that even ergonomic"
"how can you type on that thing?"
"why is it clear?"
"that thing is ugly"
"another keyboard Phil? I think you have a problem"
"will you just pick a keyboard and stick with it!"

no it was specifically the lubrication on the contact point of the stem that did it, i'm pretty sure. i've had both ergo clear and lubed ergo clear using springs from MX blue switches (before all those fancy pants korean springs were on the market we used to have to cannibalize old MX switches).

After that question was answered, my coworkers loved that I changed keycaps/keyboards once or twice a week.  Man, if only they knew of the collection I have now!

It may be a culture thing as well.  I tend to assume all work norms are like US/Canadian offices.  Being inquisitive, offering comments/suggestions/criticism is fairly usual here.  In other countries, if people see an unusual keyboard on someone's desk, they may not ask any questions, so as not to seem ignorant.  Perhaps it's a specialist's keyboard, like the guy at my old company that was our solo NeXT programmer.  Or a luxury keyboard, only available to people with connections.

Just sayin'.

I've received nothing but positive feedback from co-workers whenever I bring in a different keyboard to type on at work. Most of them don't notice that I have an "unusual" keyboard unless it has colorful keycaps or they sit down to type on it. Either way, all responses have been pleasant thus far.

I gave away my TG3-TP to a  friend/co-worker who is a former police officer. He really liked it, especially the backlighting. He plans to use it in his media room/basement. In addition, another co-worker liked the layout and feel of my G84-4100 so we had the manager buy her one for $16.

-- "Why are people on your keyboard website getting so worked up about racism?  Do those people really care about the love/hate of skin color in a place that openly worships rainbow colored keys?"

He's absolutely right about that part. Political/religious arguments on a keyboard forum do nothing but plague it. There are thousands of forums on the internet where such topics are not only freely discussed, but also encouraged.

Well the cleaning lady about fell over the day she came in and picked up my keyboard to put a small piece of paper to 'test' her workers to see how well they were cleaning when I mentioned that they keyboard costs almost $150 and the keycaps added another $80 on top of it.

Needless to say they don't touch my desk anymore.

Wow, I hope your cleaning staff is trustworthy. I don't think I'd mention what my stuff is worth. Touch of paranoia, maybe.

I don't take my board home from work, but we are in a relatively secure area and like I said, I don't talk about the value.

After the last cleaning people were caught stealing, I have camera's recording them now. And we started using key cards for access.

And we expended an existing cleaning group from another location that has been trustworthy for over 5 years now.

I've finally gotten my friends and other half to appreciate my keyboards.  They mostly love the full-sized white LED Ducky Shine II (as it looks more standard), but my OH loves showing off my painted cases now and likes my Nyan Cat set :)  Though he says I'm crazy to have it, because there are no numbers of symbols on those caps.

May even have a friend who would like me to get him his first mechanical keyboard :)

I've converted most of my IT coworkers to mechanical boards, now.  Though, none seem to like linear - I'm all alone with my reds.  They've grown fond of their browns and refuse to change.

Non-IT coworkers...well they can't understand how I type on blanks.  The thought process that you can remember where keys are by muscle memory goes beyond their logic.

clacks are used on keyboards. People say things about clacks. It doesn't 100% apply to the title, but then again when is every single post in a topic on topic 100%? I don't know. If you're such a genius why don't you tell me? I don't see anything wrong. I was on topic, others were not, but I was called out for not being on topic. If the community is so good and fine before I was here, then how come the people who were here before me nitpick on my post that is on topic rather than on other people's posts who were blatantly off topic?

Pacifist, as I'd already mentioned, there's a good time to pursue your battle and then there's a good time to throw in a towel and get a nice cold drink, and do something else.  This is one of the latter times.

I will pursue this battle because I was on topic and did not violate any rules but was nitpicked while others weren't and weren't criticized at all. I will also pursue this battle because other people have called me out on nothing wrong and insulted me. This has gone beyond personal.

Quitting and throwing in the towel now only justifies nitpicking on something that shouldn't be nitpicked. If I don't show that these nitpickers are wrong, they will only continue to nitpick and nitpick perpetually. Objectively speaking, his post was not out of line with other posts here.  It's a different manner entirely that what he posts seems to elicit a lot of negative response, justifiably or not.  In this particular thread, I believe there was no good reason why he should have gotten so much flame for some pretty innocent posts.  If everyone could drop insulting each other (specifically, if everyone would please stop insulting Pacifist here), it'd be very much appreciated.  This was meant to be a lighthearted thread about our silly keyboard addiction.

For the record:
Topic: Things (average) People Say About Your Keyboard(s)

Pretty simple really.

Anyhoo, I've found the entire spectrum from "Whaaaaa?" to "Oh, that's interesting/different, I didn't know." to "That's neat, what else can it do?" to a pretty flat "Whatever."

The surprising thing is the responses from people that I would have expected the exact OPPOSITE response from, in both directions, over enthusiasm/under enthusiasm. That's been worth the price of admission alone.

Glad to see this thread was brought back from the dead. I always get comments on my clack on my HHKB, people asking, "What does this key do?" and such. All my friends think my EDox is sick, and it's gotten to the point that whenever I talk to my old boss, he asks what keyboard I'm using. I was that guy at the office that would have a different keyboard every week lol.

I've brought up an ErgoDox in my household and showed some particularly nice photos and was called "crazy" :)  Still, I'm used to that, and my friends already thought I was crazy to have a super heavy keyboard made of metal.  "Why would anyone even make that?!!!..."

"Where are the arrow keys?"
"I don't like that type of keyboard, you have to press the keys too far."
"How much was it? Oh..... that much, really? Well, it's nice...."
"Which switches does it have? Browns? Great, I have a G710+" <-- from a guy temporarily assigned to the same project  :)

At least in my office the Dell Quietkey is very common (these are surprisingly good for rubber domes and have some nice design features such as the curved bottom edge on the thumb keys which I find really helps comfort when typing), so people don't have to suffer with really bad rubber dome boards, but it would be nice to see a little more enthusiasm for mechanicals. At least some of them who aren't interested in my Pure are interested in my ergo board.

I was like 'yeah I'm into keyboards as a hobby, I buy all my own input gear.' Then of course he used the mouse and was like wow its so sensitive (its only 8200 DPI)....then he goes, yeah for me I use all razer gear since I'm into gaming and stuff, he then proceeded to tell me more than I ever wanted to know about his gaming abilities with his razer gear.
