On July 18th 2012, in spite of some hardware hiccups, GeekHack went live once again. During the days and weeks prior, iMav and ashort froze to death in a data center to install new hardware and get our new software environment up and running. The old site was imported into the new platform, configured, and then iMav hit the switch. Poor ashort had to make an emergency return to the DC to replace a dying-but-not-dead-enough-to-fail hard drive that was holding the site back at relaunch. We tweaked the site over the weeks and months that followed and eventually things settled down. Using "unique posters" as the metric, it took many months to get back to pre-r00tworm levels of forum activity:

I can hardly believe it's been a year. A lot has happened and the staff has been working hard to try to make the community better. Thanks to member donations (direct and indirect), we were able to afford some better hardware. A few months after the relaunch, samwisekoi came on board as an admin. The new machine combined with more hardware donations from samwisekoi and other staff members gave us the really solid platform we are running on now.
We had a pretty good turnout for the forum default theme poll (http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=45223.0), so I am going to go ahead and make the switch to Nostalgia. Unlike the surprise with Austere, I won't be resetting anyone's theme choice. You won't notice any change if your profile is not set to "Forum or Board Default". This change is mainly for new members and guests. New themes are in the works, so this is not the end of the story.
Stay tuned for the 6th anniversary of GeekHack!

Remember when you used to crash this site once every few months?

Bro... I really liked Austere. I was like "Eww! What's this thing...?" and switched back to Austere.

How could I forget, you know, with everyone so keen on reminding me.
...I can hardly believe it's been a year...
Ditto, though having said that it does many times feel like a lifetime ago. I would attribute that feeling to the great efforts mods and admin have contributed. So thanks again!

Anniversaries are so cool. It will be interesting to see what geekhack is like a year from now.

It's great to have a choice!

The best thing that happened to geekhack happened two months and four days after that date.

I think your goal should be to have 9000 posts this time next year.

Moose, you have a long way to go before you hit 50,000.

Moose, you have a long way to go before you hit 50,000.
And you have a long time to go before you hit 500.

Easily another year!

Thanks again to iMav for starting GH in the first place, and to iMav and the other admins for resuscitating and keeping GH alive and fresh since.

Back to austere for me too. It's so cool, though, to be part of a forum community that lets its members make decisions like this. I'm so glad the rootw0rm incident was overcome a year ago!

Nostalgia is where its at. I may not have many posts, but I've been around a little while! Next month it'll be two years.

Unless he's going ripster. Then it would take about 5 minutes.
