Oh no just curious!  People were suggesting fancy additions, like wooden handles, so I was wondering if you were going to tweak the tools a bit (not wooden handles, but who knows!)

I was thinking of getting rid of the holes, but they are nice so that you can tie them together as a set instead of a loose pair

The holes make it easy to add a second bend into the pair. Leave them.

This tool is a must have,
I can't imagine modding switches without it
It's even good to remove diodes when they are stuck inside the switch (mostly on vintage boards I guess, like skidata)

I second this notion.  They took me a little while to get used to, but once I got in the groove switch disassembly was lightning quick

I had the same problem with one of the two sets I bought from the very first round. The tip of the two prongs were not filed good enough, so they don't catch the plastic holes well. It's not hard to file it myself, but I already had another set so I didn't bother fixing that one that didn't work well.

I've been using my Dad's handmade can lid, reciprocating saw blade, and hacksaw blade switch openers up to this point. I wonder if I should try out a set of these... They certainly wouldn't leave the occasional scratch on the PCB like the lids/blades do.

What's wrong with it?

The tines on one of the pieces are too rounded, looks like they were ground down too much. Makes it so that piece doesn't get as far down as it needs to and pops out when I put any pressure on it. I can still use the other piece to open the switches up, it's just much slower that way.

Ordered a set!  Just out of curiosity, when do you anticipate shipping these out with the order deadline being August 1?

My laser guy has had lead times between 3 days and 2 weeks. He's super busy and has even invested in another $300,000 laser cutter. However, he's slammed and needed that 2nd machine. So it's really hard to say.

If I order August 1st with a 2 week lead time, that puts me at 8/15 (My birthday) and I'll try to get a few sets done to sell or "ship" at Keycon and ship the rest after that.

I will be ordering August 1st and collecting payment shortly after. Needless to say, if you cancel your order after I've bought them, I'm not going to be a happy camper!

That's what I wanted to hear!  :D  Hopefully it'll work out that way and I can save a few bucks on shipping (?).

For sure! I'll have everyone pay shipping just encase but if they're done and I don't have to ship, I'll refund you or just pay you cash at the meetup.

A quick call to my cutter has revealed that his cost are a bit higher than when I last ordered these tools.... so that's of course passed onto me.

I thought I heard him say everyone gets free tools if we get to 100 sets ;)

Yea, with a small donation to my account they'll all be free

Can you ship these in letter envelope?

That's how I'll be shipping in now, however it does not change the cost. I literally just got back from the post office to double check the shipping price. The online price seemed wrong and it was, I'm glad I double checked.

My original set came wrapped in paper in a letter envelope, so he probably means that.

As long as you pay me in a semi-timely manner, I don't really care. I would like to have payment within 2 weeks since that should be enough time for paydays or to sort out payments.

When I did it, it was the same as PP. They send 2 small amounts of money to your bank account and then you enter that into a form so they can link the accounts

Yeah, sorry, my post was directed for general information if perhaps others were curious about paying through Amazon to avoid fees.  Don't need to go through the approval process just to send money if you have a normal Amazon account.  I hope your situation gets resolved asap!  Maybe call them and see if they can at least reinstate your ability to pay with a credit card.

Yea, when I talked to the cutter this morning, he said I hit it at just the right time. I sent in my order after they had just gotten done with a large order and they started another even larger order just as I was leaving from picking them up. I really was expecting the 2 week lead time that he had told me about on my last visit.

Reread his PM..or calculate the amount you paid..

I did actually look at my Paypal history but it says 0.00 fee. Thanks for your input though.

You don't pay the fees when you pay as goods.

If you pay for goods, the seller pays fees, not you.  You will only see your own fees in your account history,  which in this case is zero.  The Beast will have to pay a fee and it will be visible to him only.

$8 + $13 = 21$ was the price for the tool.

How much did you pay?  $22.14 right?  $22.14 - 21 = $1.14 service fee.

No problem. I love helping noobs.

Only if the plate is modified to allow that, such as WFD's universal plates.  Stock plates on common keyboards, like CM QFR, won't allow you to do that--you'll have to desolder the switch.

Most non-korean (there are a few korean customs with the removable switch top cutouts, but not many) custom plates have the removable switch top cutouts. Phantom plates, GH60 plates, the poker plates I ran, the plates WFD gets made...... the list goes on. I don't think any OEM produces plates with removable switch top cutouts as of yet.

Again, CONUS will be going out tomorrow and International more than likely on Saturday. Any changes or holds (hang onto them for KeyCon....) to your orders need to be PMed to me quickly otherwise they'll be shipped to the address you provided!

One of my tools has some excess metal on the insides of one of the teeth so as you can see in the below pic it doesn't fit  :(

This demo is just for illustrating how it works. In practical, you can use this tool to open a mx switch on a plate mount keyboard without desoldering the switch.

You might want to note it only works on plates that have the extra notches to allow for switch top removal otherwise you must desolder. It works on PCB mount just fine however!

Found another great use for these...... popping a cold one!

I wouldn't dare doing that with my one, atleast not use the notched end.

They are way too substantial to bend just popping the tab on a soda! I'm actually considering carrying one on my keychain.

Been having fun using them, can't imagine opening switches without them now. I rung them on a cable and then heat shrunk. it. Thinking about adding a heat shrink on the tool top.

Got my two sets and both are awesome. A little weird to use at first once you can get used to them they work really well. Now all I need to do is get one of your plates that allows you to switch out your switch stems.

Assistance needed  :-[

I just can't remove the top of a switch at all with these
I just end up mangling the notches in the switch before one side of the tool pops out
I've tried less pressure/more pressure and nothing seems to be working

Any ideas?

Are you removing switch tops on pcb mounted switches?

Filco TenKeyPad so plate mounted afaik?

These only work with PCB mounted switches and "solderless" plates.

There are small holes on 2 sides of the switches. You insert the small dents of the tool in them, and then you apply gentle pressure on both tool to get them "close". This will make the top part of the switch go "wider" and once wide enough, you can pull it out.

I only used it with switches that were not in a board, so it might have been easier, but it should not be much harder or even easier if switches are on a board.

I've been trying that, doesn't seem to open my switches at all. Hmm. The ends of the tool slip out of the switch before enough pressure can even be applied.

Is you switch on a plate/keyboard? Mines were not and I had to keep some pressure on the bottom of the switch until it popped out.

Are they mounted on a plate?  If yes does the plate have the proper cutouts so you can actually remove it?  If yes is there an LED in the switch?

I had the same problem with mine.  You need to make sure they are being pushed all the way down.  If they're not, they'll pop out.  If they're popping out with the tool pushed all the way down, the angles on the tool might have been done wrong or the tips might be too wide still.  You can see if you can fix it or someone can fix it for you.  Maybe The_Beast will take a look at it and make sure it's made right.

I went back to my binder clip switch tool since I found it was more consistent.  Limmy has a good guide of what one should look like when finished and a general idea of how to make it (http://deskthority.net/workshop-f7/i-did-a-guide-of-how-to-open-cherry-switches-t2458.html#p43053).  Both are good tools when you get a good one.

I've tried on: A loose switch, a plate mounted keyboard, and a loose switch on a loose plate. Can't get it to work no matter what I try.

Thanks for the link Nubb. I'll check that out. I have been apply a lot of downward pressure to ensure they don't slip out but it seems as if this tool might be a dud - maybe that's why it was for sale!

Well, it won't work on plate mounted since you have to desolder them and remove them from the plate to open them up on a plate mounted keyboard.  It will only work on plate mounted if it has cutouts on it.  It's for loose switches or PCB mounted switches.

No, but I understand if they did you wouldn't be able to remove the switch top because the led would be soldered to the pcb. :p

If you think the tool does not have enough "angle" to stay in, yo could try to bend the small part that are inserted in the switch to give them more grip. But before doing that, make sure it's the real problem and not something else.
