Title: Wood polishing systems?
Post by: nubbinator on Fri, 26 July 2013, 02:59:03
I don't know how much experience many of you aside from The_Beast have with wood working, but I've been looking for some affordable wood buffing systems to give a nice lustrous finish to some of my projects. I can't seem to find any in the $50 or less range though. The closest good one I found is the Beall system that comes with three wheels, a Tripoli bar, a white rouge bar, and a bar of Carnuba wax, but it's $75 and I'm not 100% sure it would work with my lather (stupid thing uses a #0 Morse Taper, an uncommon taper for lathes.
Anyone know of any decent affordable linen/cotton buffing wheels that can work with a drill or standalone motor or any other affordable systems?

And oh do I polish my wood with them.

The problem with that is that a French Polish is a more brittle finish than others. You can get a more durable finish by working down to a fine grit sand paper, then onto pumice stone and rottenstone, Tripoli bar to white rouge, or white rouge on a buffing wheel, then finish with Carnuba wax. You can get a high gloss from poly too, but I really hate polyurethane.
