Title: Which wrist rest do you use?
Post by: wellington1869 on Sat, 18 October 2008, 15:07:32
Especially interested in people using model-M sized bulky keyboards (which I think includes Filco, Scorpius M10, Endurapro, etc etc, which are around the same size and height, I think)

Do you find that you need a wrist rest with your keyboard? If so, which one are you using? Just a "generic" one or did you have to shop around to find one that worked well?

I don't personally use one, since my hands tend to "float" over the keyboard when i'm typing, but then i'm not a guy who types for a living.  The Filco is one of the most compact full-sized keyboards (that have a numpad) out there, I don't think it's really comparable to the Model-M battleship :P.

The wrist rest is only used for breaks, not during typing, IIRC.

I use a imak ergobead thingy.  It naturally conforms to my wrists and makes typing easier for me. Its much nicer than having my wrists rest on the desk itself.

this looks good. staples has 'em, I think I'll check it out. I like that its malleable for minor height adjustment.

Right. It has these little beads that give away as your wrists rest on them.
Someone mentioned that their hands float as they type, but that doesn't work for me.
My elbows are resting on the arm rests of my chair, my wrists on the imak thingy, my hands on the keyboard.
Maybe that is not the correct form, but it works for me.
I should say that this is my setup at home, at work its completely different. I use a laptop and there are times I am programming a switch while sitting on the floor, or some crappy computer chair, or other sub-optimal sitting position.
But I get paid for doing it so it doesn't bother me so much.

Here is a link to what I have for the keyboard.

They also have this for the mouse which I also use.

I use a cheap $2 "thick-mousepad," old-school wrist rest for both my M and my Evolution.  I find that the gel and memory-foam types are too thick.  I like my rests at about 3/4".

ya me too. my wrists are always down on the table while typing, so unless its a slim keyboard I generally need something to prop them up.

I am curious as to what a "thick-mousepad" would be. My imak bead thing flattens out to about 3/4 inch which works well. I am using the HHKB keyboard now, but get the same effect with my model m's.

This is the exact one(s) I have:

That looks like it would work pretty well also. I wonder how it holds up over time. Does it get dirty? Can it be washed?

The one I have is some kind of fabric, I don't think it is machine washable but it has stayed clean for me so far. It helps that I don't eat at my desk.
Title: Which wrist rest do you use?
Post by: itlnstln on Mon, 20 October 2008, 09:58:15
I have had mine for a couple of years now, and the fabric is still in place (i.e. not separating from the foam) and clean.  They are very easy to clean using water and dish soap (like Dawn).  I like them because they are soft but not squishy.  Since I slide my hands around to use the number pad, some of the gel/memory-foam rests take too long to compress to feel comfortable.  That, and it keeps it old-school. :)

I ordered one to try it out. I have a HHKB keyboard and I think I could trim the length down to size. It looks like it could be trimmed.

If it is solid can it be cut? I have a HHKB keyboard and wonder if it can be trimmed to size.

I have no idea where, but I wrote a pretty lengthy diatribe on this board about eating at the keyboard.  If I remember correctly, the thread was about letters on the keys rubbing/coming off.  I don't know if it is an acute desire for clean equipment/workspace, or what, but I can't stand using someone's greasy, nasty keyboard.  That, and I really take pride in taking care of my things.  I have had my Evolution for about 3 or four months now, and it looks/works brand new, just like my 2 Model Ms.

Suntan lotion is really bad for electronic devices. My wife killed a digital camera and an iPod when that stuff spilled in her bag. Killed the exterior and the electronics. Thankfully, both the camera and the iPod were cheap models.

Well that sounds like it got soaked. I can see it ruining the equipment. How about if you have a film of suncreen on your hands and you are typing on a keyboard? Same probably goes for hand lotion. Would that have a bad effect on the keys?
If so, maybe lotion is like some low-level acid.

iPod ... cheap

Wow.  I would have never thought to hear that in the same sentence (unless preceded by "not").  :)  I have a 4G 40GB iPod still holding strong.  I can't find a reason to upgrade yet other than disk space.  I would rather just replace the hard drive, though.  There is a lady at work that the NASTIEST kb ever.  It is pretty greasy (probably form hand lotion), and dust has caked to it in a pretty thick layer.  Sometimes, when she is out, I have to do some of her work from her computer.  I had to stop using her PC and just remote desktop to it.  I had to go wash my hands every time I used it.  Ugh.

Hand lotion is pretty acidic, just like food grease.  Either can accelerate the smoothing of the keys' texture as well cause the rubbing off of the keys' letters.  Nasty stuff.

It actually ruined the exterior plastic as well. The silver coating of the camera went off in some places. Like the lotion dissolved the outmost surface. I'll see if I can find the camera and take some pics.

I checked out the IMAK ergobeads wrist rest (and others) at staples. The IMAK one is definitely very cool, and the 'beads' are very comfortable. But in the end I decided I wanted a very low profile wrist rest. The IMAK was squishy but didnt flatten as much as I was looking for.

The average wrist rest height seems to be 3/4 inches. There are several available at 1-inch and higher. There are very few available below 3/4 inch.
The Fellowes 58044 (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&item=390001994693) is .63 inches high (and very cheap, about 10 bucks on ebay).
In the end I wound up with a 3M WR315LE  (http://www.thenerds.net/3M.3M_Keyboard_Gel_Wrist_Rest.WR315LE.html?affid=8&ci_src=14110944&ci_sku=WR315LE%5E~%5E3M)which is only about half-inch high. The lowest profile one that I could find. I think its intended to put on top of existing plastic hard wrist rests that are built into some keyboards, but for me actually this would work well on its own.

I'm looking for a wrist rest with a gentle slope. I don't like the feel of gel or plastic. Any ideas?

This Filco FKBPR/B looks quite comfy, but it's a bit too wide (18.5"):
http://66.102.9.104/translate_c?hl=en&sl=cn&u=http://www.b18.com.tw/product_info.php%3Fproducts_id%3D599

There's also this one by Elecom, but it's not wide enough for me. At 11" wide it would be ideal for a smaller board like the HHKB:

funny, I regularly have 7-course meals while sitting at my desk. :)  Part of this is because computers/internet now provide both work and play in equal amounts. I used to eat in front of the tv, now its the computer. :)

I use a 3M WR320 for my wrist rest. It's an industrial job they sell with office supplies like keyboard trays and sh*t. This is my first one and I find it to be very comfortable and I don't mind that it doesn't match up with my keyboard in size. I use it for the mouse too.

Solidarity, comrade.  I used to work alongside a IT desktop-support group (while my job wasn't desktop support, per se, I got to hear  their stories).  The number of keyboards that died due to the accumulation of years and years of food detritus was absolutely appalling.  Some of those keyboards were so filled up with crumbs and junk that you could actually use the principle of stratigraphy to determine which foodstuffs had been eaten when.  ("Hmm ... there are three layers of miscellaneous cruft between the cheese slice and the Ritz cracker fragment ... so the cheese predates the cracker by perhaps two years.")

After you've submitted your inquiry it should be visible in your messages list (or whatever they call it, I don't remember the exact name).  It's similar to the private messaging facility found on many Internet forums.  In a day or two they'll respond with the quote.  You can then choose to accept or deny the order.  IIRC the quote does not include shipping costs.  You should also get a notification email when the quote is available.

I did this a few days ago to get a quote for a Filco "tenkeyless" keyboard with blue Cherry switches.

I've made that mistake w/crescent-shop as well ... there's a two-step process for posting to the bulletin board (IIRC, preview and post), and the second step is easy to forget or overlook.

I've used crescent-shop for three purchases -- including one where the package got mis-routed and delayed -- and they were impeccibly professional.

Works out at $32.51 before shipping.

Perhaps the shop itself would ship internationally I don't know.

haha, thanks for your honesty ch, but may I ask how they are a ripoff? A good quality leather belt can cost you anywhere from $25 to $100 and that's just a treated piece of leather with a buckle; no memory foam core, and no steel backplate.

I don't think my post come across like I intended it to... Rip-off is perhaps too strong a word in hindsight, but I mean it in the way that some people around here think Topre keyboards are overpriced - you are paying for something that is particularily well made, but it isn't necessarily twice as good as something half the price, as opposed to something that is bad but overpriced.

(That said, I don't regret buying it, and I probably will get a Topre keyboard someday :P)

None. I don't rest my wrists when typing and I try as much as I can not to rest my wrists on the desk either when I'm not typing. The very rare times that I do rest my wrists while typing is when I'm using an ergo keyboard.

P.P.S.  This post is old but see that camera up there.  That would be your keyboard if you ever put on bug repellent (DEET) and then started typing.

Just from the name of that car, "Cordoba," and the fact that Ricardo Montalban is standing next to it, you know it doesn't need any pimping.

The lotion looks to only have affected the paint on that camera.

I like mine - that rich smell of Corinthian leather!

Corinthian leather. It tasks me! It tasks me! And I shall have it! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DnZdMeEfG1Y&feature=related)

Anyhow, the only wrist rest I use is for my mouse:

The filco wrist rests are quite nice, that said, they are quite exensive for a simple (if well made) rest.

I like my Filco as well, and I think its price is about at the limit for what it would be worth.

Quick review:  the leather is nice; the padding is firm (which is my personal preference); and best of all, the entire bottom surface is a rubber no-skid foot.  That thing doesn't go anywhere.  Count me a satisfied customer.

I've considered taking a yellow highlighter to the white threading to give it that Doc Martens look, but haven't yet had the nerve.
