Title: Umm..What the...?? Model M fake number???? HALP???/**EDITED More "*duh* what?"
Post by: KandiKat on Sat, 27 July 2013, 05:33:24
I recently purchased some Model M boards for a price that was the classic "too good to be true"...Labeled 1392595...Didn't think much of the extra stickers on the underside til I was cleaning one off and decided to see what was underneath.....1394204...Sooooooooooooo...I think that's also a mainframe board (from the little I can find), but I can't find any other info. I found one for sale on eBay for $125. Are they worth that much? Is that person insane? Are these really just the same as when I thought they were 1392595?? HALP????

***************************EDIT
Soooo..I peeled the stickers that were placed over almost all of the factory labels and it turns out I have 6 different models

139-
4204 x2
2595 x2
6056 x2
3705 x2
0520 x1
0123 x1

What does this all mean?!?!?!

What "extra stickers on the underside" are you referring to? Does it look like this?

So you got 10 Model M??  Fantastic!

You are already ahead, regardless of what they turn out to be.

We can't answer about the labels without before and after pics. But $125 seems very high to me. The last three Model F 122 keyboards that sold on eBay were less than $90 each. The best way to tell what these could be worth is to look at eBay successfully sold comparable keyboards.

Install Soarer converters in them with detachable USB cables and they might be worth a good bit more.

Post photos of the keyboards themselves, labels, and connectors.

Don't despair, complete sets of caps alone sell for $30 retail.

The seller is insane. He will be lucky to get $15-20 for that board in the condition it is in. I would not pay $25 shipped.

The factory ones do - then they had little paper stickers placed over the *actual* "Parts Number" obscuring it and making them all "1392595" - I'm holding the one I peeled off[attachimg=1]

Sorry...My ADD kicked in and I ended up 12 tabs deep on on another browser when I meant to pull the pic I took from my email ... Just realized I never finished posting the answer to the first question here...Sigh.

I had some offers to purchase these w/o converters when they were all 2595.And Dorkvader offered to help me out with converting some of them, if i wanted to..But I guess I'm wondering if all the same info applies to these boards as to the 1392595 (and is it just me or is that really shady of the guy who sold them to me on ebay??)

Annnnnd...I think I may have made a terrible mistake? hahahahaha LAWD!! I *swear* there are things I am good at!! (Now that I think about it, tho...some of those things involve destruction (shooting and knife throwing being two of them)..So maybe I'm still exercising my expertise, just in the wrong context LoL------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In my zealousness to clean these up for those who might like to buy them, hubby and I popped all the key caps and washed them all...In a soup pot. Soooooo.....The ones that have lines and numbers/different symbols and characters are all mixed in....I thot they were all the same board!!!! ........ ((I hear the collective head smacking, you know!!!  :-[  ))

LMAO!  :D It's an understandable mistake, since they were all Model M's. C'est la vie.....that's life, live and learn......wow, I'm a fountain of cliches.  Hope you guys get them sorted out....

Not that it will help now but i always try and remember to snap a photo of my keyboards before removing anything just to give me an idea of what went where.

Hubby did actually do that...Except at the time we thot they were all the same 2595...Thot it was a little weird that they have diff color under keys and diff logos, etc, but this was literally 2 days before our wedding and we were sleep deprived and in a massive rush to try to get stuff done......It wasn't until tonight (I just got back from Ft Knox where hubs is stationed 2 days ago) that i was finally able to grab a board and start scrubbing off the grime..Which is when I noticed the "aftermarket" stickers, got curious, and uncovered the 6 different model numbers...They range in age from 1987-1997. I don't have the first clue which special keys go with which boards and it honestly makes my brain hurt just contemplating sorting thru about 1400 keys (yes...hubs popped quite a few of the base keys also cuz the boards were *that* crusty. This whole thing has been a massive headache and I'd like to throat punch the jerk on eBay. It's one thing for me to unknowingly buy a bunch of terminal keyboards..OK, my bad..But be a complete D to me about it *and* stick fake labels on most of them? grrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!!!!!!!))

I'd say you have a decent fraud complaint with eBay/PayPal there. In fact, I'd open it immediately claiming the seller fraudulently changed the part numbers to make them parts they were not.

That is most definitely not a factory sticker. IBM would in fact, place stickers over the PNs as a matter of course - for some RPQ'd items. The sticker would bear the RPQ rather than the PN. The QA sticker is also not IBM, period. Both amount to significant material changes in the product and deliberately misleading information.

So hey, you may end up with a stack of Model M's for free.
