Is there a primer on reddit, I've only been there once or twice to see cooler master postings and look at some of ripsters modding stuff.

It's still unexplored territory for me.

Not really, just create an account. Then, unsubscribe to most if not all default subreddits and subscribe to subreddits that interest you. There are subreddits for nearly everything.
