Title: Does anyone still use SysRq?
Post by: 1391406 on Mon, 05 August 2013, 10:12:54
Other than the Magic SysRq key (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magic_SysRq_key)(in Linux), does anyone really use it anymore?

I use it to grab a Print Screen grab, but even that is becoming obsolete with the Snipping Tool...

Print Screen is somewhat useful on occasion, in my opinion, but I wonder if SysRq (which, I believe, was invoked using Alt+SysRq) has any real usefulness at all anymore, though, or if manufacturers can safely expunge that print from keyboards altogether now?

To be quite honest, I had no idea what it did, and I imagine many others don't either. That was the point of my post. I think you're right in your thought that it serves no real purpose anymore...

In modern Windows environment, the SysRq key (alt+print screen) behaves almost same as the normal printscreen.
However instead of taking screen capture from whole monitor, it only captures the current active window.

Other than that, the SysRq key has no use in Windows environment.
