Title: o-rings and mx blues
Post by: digi on Wed, 07 August 2013, 16:18:25
Would o-rings dampen mx blues or does most of the noise come from the switch and not from bottoming out?

There's noise when you actuate and when you bottom out. My review (http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=40227.0) has videos showing the difference between the two. I personally don't think that o-rings really made Blues that much quieter.

I found most noise from blues came from bottoming out, not the clicking of the switch.

Adding O-rings did reduce that slightly, but they are still noisy switches.

I like landing pads with blues, and O-rings with all the others.

I'm also a fan of landing pads/dampeners on Blues. Used them for a long time before I put a mat underneath my PCB in my 700R

I'm currious as trying to dampen blues as well, couldn't you just get a thin foam pad at any hobby store and cut to fit?

I'm sure you could easily find the same material. But for $12 a sheet pre-cut is good for me. I don't really want to sit down with a hobby knife and cut em out.

In my case at least, most of the sound from my keyboards with blue switches comes from bottoming out. My typing style is heavy, and I bottom out on every stroke.

I did an O-ring mod on my Leopold FC660M using 40A-L (red) rings, which are purported to soften the landing with a minimum effect on key travel. I noticed a substantial silencing -- so much so that I have used the modified board to take notes during conference calls; it would have been too noisy for use during calls before the modification.

A few months ago somebody bought a foot of rubber tube and cut thin slices off of it.

quick question for people that use the landing pads.  Do they block the LEDs when you install them?

No, just offset them a little.

Np, you can also just cut them a little so they fit around the LED.

Just got done installing the soft landing pads under my blues, not sure I dig it... The reason being is that there is inconsistent bottoming out action due to the various height of the key caps ranging from the bottom to the top of the board. Before the landing pads, every key would bottom out the same. Yea, I think I'm not liking this.. :(

Are you using the gray or the black soft landing pads (SLPs)? Are they seated properly? (I have not tried these yet; I have only tried O-rings, but I just received some SLPs in both gray and black to try out).

I am using the soft black landing pads. I made sure each pad would sit as well as it could under the cap. On the SP modifiers, the base of the stem doesn't allow the pad to sit at the bottom of the cap so it doesn't work well on modifiers from what I can tell.

On your A-Z keys, because the height of the caps vary throughout each row, the result of the key press varies because some are closer to bottoming out than others. Without the pads, each key press will bottom out exactly the same. This changes when you modify the travel distance with the pads.

I appreciate the attempt for making a product that will quiet down the switches down, but for $18, I wouldn't buy them again.

i use these on plate mounted blues and love them:

for me adding o-rings makes a huge difference in the office. no one complains about my clickity clack after i installed them. i dont like soft landing pads from ek, they make my board feel all rubber domey which is super gross.  i am a huge fan of o-rings on blues. i love 'em.
