Title: orbweaver replacement
Post by: Melvang on Sun, 11 August 2013, 13:45:54
Alright guys I have had my orbweaver for a bit now and I have to say I am not to fond of the HAT switch.  Do any of you guys use half an ergodox for a game pad or would this idea not be feasible?  Comments suggestions?

Melvang

what's wrong with the hat switch, there's four inputs on that.

the thumb area on the EDx has about 3-4 easily reachable buttons.

There wouldn't be a huge difference.

You can't remap the hat switch?

Its not the mapping.  I just don't like the feel on it.

you have to setup a gaming layer, depending on how seriously you play the game.

for example

the space key on the EDx is on the Right,

For games that don't allow you to remap, you need to put it back on the LEFT.

And depending on the size of your hand, you might make the right most 1x on the non-thumb cluster section ALSO a space key

This is for comfort, so you don't have to move your wrist at all

Alternatively,

You could switch the keys one step over and use the regular space key which would normally be back space, but is not customed for space

The point is,   The flexibility is there on the ergodox..   all things are possible..

alright thanks for the info TP.  The ergo dox would be strictly used for a game pad so no need to setup multiple layers plus I use WASD for movement.  Thumb buttons would be used for abilities that need a quick reaction to get to.  Mostly play WoW in a raiding guild

I participated in the most recent ergodox pcb gb to buy a single pcb to use as a game controller. I haven't soldered it up but we'll see how it goes. I have some pcb mount switches I plan to use.

how hard would it be to use the orbweaver pcb with a ergo dox frame and keys?
