Post by: wellington1869 on Tue, 11 November 2008, 07:47:36
So imav, how come you dont have any geekhack t-shirts available on cafepress?
I think you should give a free t-shirt to the upcoming 300th member ;D

so what happened with that? Why did it stall?

Imav, wouldnt it be best to put it on cafepress? Some advantages:
--you wont have to shepherd each idea yourself, just have to 'approve' it at the geekhack store on cafepress. Less work for you.
--users can design their own and put them up (and other users can buy those if they especially like them). (some of the user-submitted designs on the thread above are pretty cool, actually!)
--users can choose what color t-shirt they want (wont be limited to black).
--users would also have more choice in price and type of t-shirt/sweatshirt etc. For instance the cheapest tee on cafepress is actually only $12.
--users can put the logos on anything they want, not just t-shirts.  Cups, mugs, etc. Whatever they want to buy. Even stickers.

I for one thought of writing out "geekhack.org" in various languages other than english (like sanskrit for instance). You know, kinda subtle ;) -- a url looks pretty funky written out in sanskrit. ;)

I would too -- This forum is obscure enough to be cool on a t-shirt ;)

You know, I had an idea... one keycap from each of some of Geekhack's favorite keyboards, to make up the logo. (A vector version of this would be ideal for obvious reasons, and someone could probably make that in Illustrator or something, given pics of the keys (not me, I suck at that sort of thing)...)

So, 1391401 is obvious...

What else? I'm thinking... Filco Majestouch, HHKB Pro, Topre Realforce 86U, Model M spacesaver (give it a K or O, so that it's obvious that it's a spacesaver we're talking about...)

Anything else? (Actually, I think this is gonna be worthy of its own thread...)
Title: Your favorite keyboard... period.

I came up with this idea in the latest T-shirt thread...

(If that idea were to be implemented, 12 different models would be needed, this forum is big enough to come up with 12 different good models. So, for that thread, I'll submit the 12 most popular models. I will consolidate models that have keycaps that are identical, though.)

I'll start out with... IBM 1391401.

One keycap?
Then I would suggest the Das III. I think the fonts are really nice on those keycaps.

IBM Model M, probably a black/gray labeled 1391401 if I had to pick a specific one.

The Filco has nice lettering IMHO.

I actually did setup a cafepress store...but I need to design the appropriate logo.  I did a high res version of the site's logo, minus the ".org"  (so, "GEEKHACK").  But I like the idea is using keys from various keyboards.

Any one here with graphic design chops that would be willing to step up and help design a new logo that is t-shirt worthy?

I say we run with the idea of keys from multiple keyboards.  Probably the easiest way is for folks to upload high res picks of all the needed letters from a keyboard so we have options.  I'd say get a good portion of the surrounding keys and then they can be cropped.  (so, 'g', 'e', 'k', 'h', 'a', 'c')

Topre Realforce 86. It's the only one I use, the font looks nice and the keyboard rocks. Check my review for pics.

HHKB will have to be represented...which should be from someone's white, labeled or the black, labeled Lite (which has white lettering on black keys).

A Filco 'boarrd should be there as they are great and have a decent-looking font as well.

Of course a Model M (I like the idea of using a key from the 84-key spacesaver that is obviously from that 'board.

Perhaps a black on gray key from an Endurapro (give Unicomp some love...maybe use the 'G' or 'H' so that the trackpoint can be seen).

Maybe a key from the SMK-88 or even the new Apple keyboard (simply because it is unique-looking).  I'd like to see Apple get some love in some form (maybe a key from an Apple Extended?)

This is a good idea, but won't most of these keys in similar colors be nearly indistinguishable from each other? Just a thought.

I 'G' from a black-on-grey Endurapro will be easily identifiable.  The keyboards designed for Apple have a  unique font.  If you used a key from the new Apple keyboard (chiclet keyboard), that would be very different.  As mentioned before, a key from a Model M mini (one with the numpad markings on it) would be identifiable by keyboard geeks.

So, I have to say I disagree.  As long as we make good choices, I think we can make each key very unique from each other.

And the Filcos have a notably different font, right?

So, we need to decide whether it's gonna be Geekhack or Geekhack.org.

A slogan on the back (something like "Life is too short to type on crappy keyboards" would be nice, too. (And, we'll need to pick a font for that... I think our oldest favorite would be the 1391401, so at that time, the graphics adapters of choice would've been MDA and CGA... and the MDA font is more aesthetically pleasing, so...

Here's the MDA font, in an image:

I guess I'd vote for something more subtle, or no slogan. I personally like t-shirts that are a little bit mysterious. then you get to answer questions when the pretty girls ask you, "what the hell is that?".

I merged this thread with the recent t-shirt thread in "off topic"...hopefully that doesn't confuse anyone.  :)

I initially thought just having "geekhack", but it makes sense to have "geekhack.org" so that it may drive some new members to the site.

We could certainly do one with no slogan as well as offer a few with different slogans on the back.  I like the suggestions so far, keep them coming.  We can vote on them later if you'd like.

Ultimately, I'd love to have a picture thread of members wearing their geekhack t-shirts around the world (with distinguishable landmarks in the background).  That just seems cool to me.

Hey, I almost dated a woman who was a bit of a keyboard snob, although horribly misguided - she hated ThinkPad keyboards, and, worse, this was her favorite keyboard:

(I got her to type on a Model M twice, and she didn't mind it, though, so there was hope... and, why I say she was a bit of a keyboard snob... she was able to actually state why she disliked the ThinkPad keyboard (and all laptop keyboards) - the reduced stroke of all laptop keyboards, the reduced key pitch of the machine she was using (4:3 X-series models have a shrunken keyboard - IIRC, 96% of full-size,) and she likes the full 101/104 layout with numpad.)

Post by: lowpoly on Thu, 13 November 2008, 16:27:10
That Dell has some good points that I'd like to see in other boards. For ex. the lower edge of the first (space bar) row is rounded which is more comfortable for keys that you hit with the side of your thumb. Also, the case is quite small. Of course its a rubber dome but someone tried to make a good board under bad preconditions.

I can see where lowpoly has a point. I would go a step further and remove the numpad, a dell mini it would be, and pick your choice of switch. On the other hand, these boards have a fair amount of flex to them, but that could be fixed with a metal plate and thicker plastic.

(And, even, the same mechanism as some "Model M"s... although I refuse to call a rubber dome board a Model M, hence the quotes.)

I have a Dell SK-8135. I only used it for a week and started to feel numbness in my fingers and pains in my hands. :(

Nice design though. I liked the curved keys on the bottom row and the keyboard felt well made, sturdier than the Cherrys I own. The spacebar was noisy compared to the rest of the board, I found this really irritating.

Post by: bhtooefr on Sat, 15 November 2008, 14:21:54
lowpoly: This is true, although usually the nasty letters go to Cafepress, and Cafepress deletes the item.

However, in the case of the Model M shirt, it's part of the patent drawing, which is public domain once the patent is expired, IIRC. (And, it expired 11 or so years ago, IIRC.)

I'm working on something, using patent drawings...

Drawings from the following patents are currently used:

4,118,611 - Buckling spring torsional snap actuator, invented by Richard Hunter Harris, assigned to International Business Machines Corporation, filed 1977-08-30
4,584,444 - Keyboard switch, invented by Takao Nagashima, assigned to Topre Corporation, filed 1984-09-21

I'm trying to find the patents for the Cherry MX and Alps switches...

Edit: Is patent 4,186,290 an Alps? It looks like one, and it belongs to Alps Electric, and was designed for computer terminal use, but I'm not 100% sure that it's actually what I'm looking for. Take a look at the diagrams here (http://patimg2.uspto.gov/.piw?docid=US004186290&SectionNum=2&IDKey=6AFB50297694&HomeUrl=http://patft.uspto.gov/netacgi/nph-Parser?Sect1=PTO2%2526Sect2=HITOFF%2526u=%25252Fnetahtml%25252FPTO%25252Fsearch-adv.htm%2526r=195%2526f=G%2526l=50%2526d=PTXT%2526s1=((alps.ASNM.%252BAND%252Bkey)%252BAND%252Bswitch)%2526p=4%2526OS=an/alps%252Band%252Bkey%252Band%252Bswitch%2526RS=((AN/alps%252BAND%252Bkey)%252BAND%252Bswitch)). (They're in TIFF format, though, so you'll need a TIFF plugin such as AlternaTIFF to view them.)

I'm gonna use figure 7 (on sheet 5, which is page 6) if it is, because that one matches the style of the other drawings I've got.

Edit 2: Or 4,249,055 is also mentioned for that application...

Edit 3: Looks like 4,467,160 is the Cherry MX (and I also found the ML.) Annoyingly, that patent doesn't have any drawings in the same style...

They look like real technical diagrams, because they are real technical diagrams, straight from the US patents. ;)

Actually, I wouldn't mind to see the German patent for the Cherry MX, to see if there's anything better for me to use than that exploded diagram... the real issue is that the printing on that one will wear away faster than the other diagrams.

Resolution is way too low on that image (she got it from the Cherry site,) and the legality could be questionable.

There's a reason I only used patent drawings. ;)

I think the design looks great.  If anyone is up to creating other designs, feel free.  Choice is a good thing!

(that being said, I'm very happy with what we have now and very much appreciate the effort)

Its nice and I especially like it on a black tee :)
One observation, the second keyswitch (from the left) shows up only very lightly. Not as pronounced as the others. Not that I think that really matters.

I'd second webwit's suggestion for an additional simpler version with smaller fonts and possibly without the drawings. A simple version might be just the right thing for folks like webwit and others who prefer non-loud t-shirts (loudness is relative of course, but I know a lot of people are sensitive about what they're wearing).

For the not-as-loud version, why not put the keycaps image (of "geekhack.org') (http://geekhack.org/showpost.php?p=11256&postcount=64) in front (not too big), and under it "wanna switch?" in small font?  (both should be relatively small, since the idea is for a subtler tee)

that way the two main designs we've talked about in this thread would be available... and choice would be a great thing :)

[if the keycap image above isnt showing up well on different colored tees, then maybe just model M keycaps for all the letters. Those should show up well on any background color, and are 'classics'].

p.s., a third variation on this same design could be the current tee (i.e., with the drawings at current size) but with much smaller fonts on both "geekhack.org" and "wanna switch?").

I need to take some time and read up on the image requirements for cafepress.  (for some reason, they don't like my keycap image)

Maybe bhtooefr can help.  :)

Interesting you should mention that.

Early on, I had envisioned a HHKB Pro giveaway contest that would be essay-based.  Something cheesy like, "how would a HHKB complete me?"  But it turned out that, at the time, so many members already HAD HHKB's that it would've been a waste (and I couldn't think of another keyboard that would be as universally coveted by the membership).

As many know here, I regularly give keyboards away to members.  (no real rhyme or reason to it...just when I feel like it)  I could certainly see randomly rewarding good posts/reviews/etc with free geekhack merchandise.  (bhtooefr certainly should get a free t-shirt)  ;)

The reason the second image shows up so faintly is because the lines are much thinner.

Image requirements for CafePress t-shirts... optimal is 2000x2000, 200 DPI, PNG. Anything else will give subpar results. Using transparency is good, too, and is required on dark shirts. (IIRC, on light shirts, white is treated as transparent.)

What resolution is your screen? I can do some cropping and scaling, if you want to go that route.

Also, what sort of background and foreground colors do you want?

(I've got the 2000x2000 original in front of me. ;))

My screen resolution is 1280 x 1024 (x2) and my base color is RGB 26,26,26.  I think a 900 x 900 version with white text and a 26,26,26 base color would be sweet.  Thanks!!!

Not sure.  I just pulled those numbers from the Display Properties screen in Windows (XP x64).  It should be a really dark grey (almost black).  I appologize; my graphic arts skillz suck.

Well, both 26,26,26 decimal and #262626 (HTML hexadecimal notation) are a really dark, almost black grey. But, the first one is a slightly darker grey - #1a1a1a, in HTML notation.

And, checking the properties box, it's in decimal, so...

So I just found out that I used the wrong Alps switch. I used the Alps leaf spring switch, not the Bigfoot switch that is liked on this forum.

So, I'll be editing everything, and making new versions, and sending them to iMav. ;)

Also, because of the change, the Alps Bigfoot is actually the newest switch, meaning the Topre gets moved to the left.

this is my idea, would kind of get what we are about and be obscure.

Sorry its in txt, but I couldn't think of another way

Code: [Select]
[ ][ ][ ][ ][ ][ ][ ][ ][ ][ ][ ][ ][ ][   ]
[  ][ ][ ][E][R][ ][ ][ ][ ][O][ ][ ][ ][  ]
[   ][A][ ][ ][ ][G][H][ ][K][ ][ ][ ][ ][ ]
[  ][ ][ ][C][ ][ ][ ][ ][ ][.][ ][ ][     ]
[   ][  ][  ][            ][  ][  ][  ][   ]

with probably geekhack.org printed on the back of the shirt

how about a top-down view, like the keyb outline megarat used here (http://geekhack.org/showpost.php?p=11582&postcount=1) with everything but the geekhack letters blanked out.
Small size though, what I liked about it was that it was non-obvious and non-loud... ;)

You really need a vector version so it doesn't degrade on resize:

love it :)  On a black t-shirt as the background, if its a smallish size (definitely "between the nipples"), I think it would be pretty cool :)

Should ".org" also be represented?

maybe the final design can have "geekhack.org" in white/gray letters (like in post #110) along the bottom? (I'd buy it either way tho).

if you mean like this

[ ][ ][ ][ ][ ][ ][ ][ ][ ][ ][ ][ ][ ][   ]
[  ][ ][ ][.][ ][ ][ ][G][C][R][ ][ ][ ][  ]
[   ][A][O][E][ ][ ][ ][H][ ][ ][ ][ ][ ][ ]
[  ][ ][ ][ ][ ][K][ ][ ][ ][ ][ ][ ][     ]
[   ][  ][  ][            ][  ][  ][  ][   ]

I'm not sure that wouldn't be TOO obscure.

how many no keyboard peeps are gonna glaze over when you go past "its a forum about keyboards etc..." when try to explain a layout they don't recognise.

Sticking with QWERTY, or AZERTY is more likely to succeed, I think.

AZERTY
Code: [Select]
[ ][ ][ ][ ][ ][ ][ ][ ][ ][ ][ ][ ][ ][   ]
[  ][A][ ][E][R][ ][ ][ ][ ][O][ ][ ][ ][  ]
[   ][ ][ ][ ][ ][G][H][ ][K][ ][ ][ ][ ][ ]
