Title: [SOLD] Alps Electric keyboard - whites - double-shots - I need the money
Post by: fohat.digs on Fri, 16 August 2013, 10:32:29
I hate to part with this very nice board, but I need some money.

This is an Alps-branded white switch board with no markings on the front. It has a very nice small footprint and clean true ANSI form factor. I consider it to be an "ideal" board configuration and have been holding it with the idea of transplanting switches. For example, orange and/or blues I hope to get from an ebay purchase, something I like better than whites, to go into it. But, besides the money, it seems a shame to "mess with" it since someone who likes stiffer switches might consider it perfect as-is.

The board has obviously seen some light-to-moderate use since some of the more often-used keys are starting to develop some shine, but it is very clean and strong with no problems. It has a coiled cord and PS/2 plug.

The keys are beautiful double-shots. I have included a photo next to Model M caps. The "pearl" caps are whiter and brighter than the IBMs, and the "pebble" caps are darker and richer. If you are accustomed to "classic" colors, you will immediately recognize that these are dramatic. I cannot recall seeing a set of Alps double-shots without a bigass enter.

I am putting it up here, at auction, starting bid at $50 + shipping ($17 domestic US, $78 international, via USPS Priority Mail) until Sunday night, 9:30 pm Eastern time, before putting it up on ebay (possibly with keys exchanged so that I can keep these for my AT101 project). I am also offering a Buy-It-Now option.

PM me with a bid and I will update from time to time.

BIN - the first $100 + shipping to topvendor@gmail.com gets it outright.

Great board and very hard to find good quality Alps in a true ANSI layout.

Those are some gorgeous caps on that board.  I wish I had the cash for it.

hey

If you want to raise cash, got anything else to sell? Model Fs, buckling spring keycaps, model F foam pads (I notice you have been making your own spanking brand new ones which I can't do because I don't have the tools or space for a workshop...), spare Model F legs, cork feet, I need such things!

Sunday morning bump.

For all the chatter about high-end Alps, somebody should grab this.

One last bump.

This is a really nice board, folks.

I have kept this one and have gotten rid of at least 2 Northgate Omnikeys, not because it is superior to a Northgate in construction (it isn't), but because the size and ANSI configuration is just right.

I cannot recall seeing a set of Alps double-shots without a bigass enter.

FYI, the AT101 and (some versions of) the OmniKey 101 come with doubleshots in a standard ansi layout as well, with a small enter.  The AT101 has the stepped capslock like your board does, but the OmniKey has an unstepped one.

The omnikey 101 comes with RGB-on-grey modifiers, too, which are pretty neat.  I've also seen them with brightly colored fn keys.

You are right about there being a Northgate in the "small standard" layout although those seem pretty rare, and I have not had one.

I have had several (as in 8-10) Dell AT101s and I have never had one with doubleshots.

I do like stepped keys in almost all cases.

Ah, I didn't realize that most AT-101s weren't doubleshots, sorry!  I've never owned one (though I do own a pair of northgates, a 101 said small enter, and a broken 102 that I'm harvesting switches from for a 60%).

So you have an AT102 with doubleshots?

Presumably it is an AT102 and not an AT102W since it must be from back in the good ole days. The 102 is UK layout, right?

The board was won for $55 + shipping.

It is worth a lot more than that.

Don't take this the wrong way, but why? This is a used, old keyboard with a common switch type. Are doubleshots, "true-ANSI", and ALPS branding worth $100?

Naw, I have a northgate omnikey 102 with doubleshots (normal ansi-esque layout with "big ass enter").  I've never owned an AT101.

(And, I believe I paid 75 shipped for my omnikey 101, which was like new in box, though they don't seem to come up for sale too often).

Naturally, by the most common definition, anything is "worth" what somebody will pay for it, today.

I cannot imagine paying $20 for a skull-shaped key cap, much less 10 times that amount, but others will.

Old, used? I am typing this message on a keyboard manufactured during Ronald Reagan's first term in office.

Personally, having owned at least 3 dozen keyboards with Alps switches, I found this to be one of the best.

My original intent was to sell it for $85 including domestic shipping. I made the mistake of "getting greedy" and assuming that it would probably sell higher.

I should have put it up on ebay. Being a worldwide marketplace, that is where a seller < might > get top dollar, or a buyer < might > get a bargain, depending on a combination of skill, luck, and timing.

Here at geekhack, many members expect to find bargains, and/or sellers who don't need the money, and, from my perspective, things here tend to trade consistently near the bottom of their "normal" price range.
