Title: A sincere apology to the whole of GeekHack
Post by: MOZ on Fri, 16 August 2013, 21:08:10
So, yeah, I churned a ****storm today. It was more to do with things IRL than on GeekHack or IRC.

Add to it the lack of sleep and some stress. Yes, the IRC was the final spark, that set me off, and I couldn't stop, all I really needed was 10mins and a cold glass of water.

I have embarrassed myself enough, I would like to apologise to vun, dubsgalore, jdcarpe, mkawa and SmallFry in particular, and I am truly sorry GeekHack.

I will take a break now and get some much needed sleep and get back, and clean all the mess and apologise personally to each and everyone I have offended.

I would like to thank the staff of GH for tolerating me and my temper, I am really grateful.

And no, none of the GBs are cancelled, although I understand that my immaturity would have made you doubtful. If it is so, please bare with me and if you are still unsure, I can understand completely.

You'll have some serious bridge building to do to recover from an outburst like this. I recommend you go ahead and cancel these GBs, and work on building your reputation.

I'm sorry, but even your replies to my sincere PMs when I was checking if everything was okay were completely off.  As much as I appreciate your group buys... this was all too much for no good reason.

Nah, you're cool. Reading the posts of someone you know has died is a bit strange even if you never knew the person well.

The problem arises when you almost act like you knew the person on a forum with several people who actually knew them, which was part of the reason this whole ****storm started.

I'm not ever going to claim I knew him, or that my grief on the matter can compare, but think about this. If you've never PMed him directly, you knew him entirely from his board posts.
I'm becoming a part of this community, and I'm walking through the old posts, and I'm getting to know a man I can never get to know. I don't get closure on this, it'll only get worse the longer I'm here and the more I get to know him. I didn't have to lose him, no, but that doesn't mean I don't FEEL his loss.

Going to have to agree here. Just because they didn't personally know him, doesn't mean that his story can't touch them the same way it does people that knew him.

I don't clain to have known him, or share the same grief as you, infact in some ways, I have no grief, as i didn't know him.

I was shocked yes, and I have mentioned, I would have been the same way on any other forum for any member.

However, before his demise, I came to GH, got answers and left. When mkawa created that thread, I saw the brotherhood and wanted to be a part, and in some ways maybe vun was right, I wanted to be a part as quickly as possible.

I should just calm down and take things slowly.

ok, never ever ever said that, or claimed that at all

it is 100% ok for people to be shocked or upset to read, who are new to the community, but when u act like you knew him and say you wish you could visit his parents, then it's a bit much

but when he continues on and on and goes overboard, and actually bums people out in the IRC because they are seeing his name so much, it just seems a bit much

You're right, and I'll scale it back, or reply to existing threads instead of creating new ones.
I wish I could be there at Keycon with you guys, and let his parents know that he's touched people who he never even knew.

Let them know for me?

Post by: vun on Fri, 16 August 2013, 21:46:36
To clear things up; my comment was simply based on that the posts I'd seen from moz so far seemed to be a bit too eager to be part of it, kinda like someone you barely know, or don't know at all, call you by a nickname only your closest friends use and then start pretending to be part of the in-jokes they have no part in. It's the same sort of feeling.

I'm not saying moz did anything wrong, I was simply stating how I felt, which doesn't really matter since I rarely stick my head outside the input devices subforum. They weren't strong feelings either, I just saw dubs bring it up and I commented. I was fairly indifferent before the massive ****splosion, and now I'm left on the fence again.

So for the record; moz, I never said you couldn't be part of the community or that you didn't belong here, which isn't for me to decide anyways.

Not trying to stick my nose into an issue that I wasn't involved in, but this post has allowed me to put into words some things I've been feeling that I really haven't had a place to say before...

I've been a lurker on these boards for almost two years, a registered member for over a year.  While I am constantly browsing the forum, I don't tend to be too vocal, though I appreciate the community and members, Geekhack is part of my daily life.

The thing about smallfry, to me at least, was that he had a remarkable ability to make everyone feel a part of the geekhack family.  Whether you were a veteran or noob, or just a lurker like myself, his charisma and passion and genuine kindness shone through his posts, and really made me feel involved and invested in this community.

I had several life events come up lately that resulted in my not visiting Geekhack for a few months, and when I returned and saw that smallfry had passed, it felt like I had been kicked in the stomach.  No, I didn't know him personally.  No, I didn't interact with him to anywhere near the degree that so many of you all have.  But what I knew is that a smart, kind, passionate young man who's conversations always made me feel welcome, had had his life tragically cut short, and that I would no longer get to share in his spirited and insightful posts.

Everyone handles things differently, and I'm sure that it is strange for new users to come to the community not knowing smallfry, yet seeing the massive footprint that he left.  I'm sure that this will be an issue going forward for quite some time, since smallfry did have such a huge impact on this community.  Though I will not pretend to have had a close relationship with him, or even have know him personally, I can say with utter confidence that the last thing that he would want would be for his memory to be divisive to the community.  Everyone handles losses differently, and I can see how it would be hard for those who knew him well to see "strangers" touching his memory, but I think the most honoring thing that the community can do is to continue in his legacy of inclusiveness and passion, and make sure that all members are left without question of what a remarkable person he was.

I'm sorry if my comments are out of place, I just needed to get this off my chest.

I don't understand where the disconnect between what we were trying to communicate and what 'others' perceived us to be trying to communicate began. I really don't understand where that spun off from because it was never said on the forum or in the channel. Never ever did anyone try to 'own' small fry or try to say its not ok for people, who were not here for him, to be shocked or confused about it. Simply after others expressed how it was kinda bumming them out to see another tribute GB from someone who had never met him did it start to seem a little too much. I think this whole thing has blown up into something it shouldn't have and I think especially in this thread there was a lot of unnecessary confusion.

there are two fields for flavor text under your username. one is the "personal text" field which you have full control over. the other is the "custom title" field which only global moderators and above have access to. they are just fun little cookies to recognize certain folks and propagate funny in-jokes. in my experience, they end up being positive things that help build community, so we're trying them out for now at least.

Wow. It can't be that bad.  Looks like I missed something in IRC.

MOZ I don't forgive you. You don't need us to forgive you for what you've done to yourself. Apologise to yourself for acting like a fool. You should have every ability to think about your reputation before you post something. I have wrote some long thing and scraped it because a part of it could come off rude. If you "know" you should have been banned "many" times then why do you continue do the things you "know" will get you banned. Just find that filter of yours and pop it in your brain, mouth, finger, w/e. This is not a competition. No one is winning in anything. Chill out.

Chill out.

Yes sir, I I have relaxed since then, and I only realised I should have been banned after I relaxed, since then I have not posted anything out of anger, but only embarrassment.

I've got about 4 different kinds and 3 different colors, still in the packaging.
