I agree. After that, Bale is the only one remotely acceptable.

As a long-time Batman fan (ie comic-reader prior to the 1960s TV series) there are several important characteristics of the Batman.

Most importantly, BIG and TOUGH. The Batman is larger-than-life and utterly menacing. I could not accept a Batman less than 6'-3" tall and massively muscled.

Batman: The Brave and the Bold

That's my favorite incarnation. Mostly because everyone else in that show is just crazy, and he's in a perpetual state of "I'm so over your bull****"

Michael Keaton hands down!

Michael Keaton is a puny wimp and an idiot.

Val Kilmer is too much of a pretty boy, also a wimp.

George Clooney is far too nice and happy to be the Batman.

I agree, except for best film and best villain.  I still prefer the Keaton "Batman" to any of the DK series.  The dark atmosphere and comic book feel of the film feels the best to me.  Also, the sound track of the original is amazing.  As for the best villain, I prefer the Jack Nicolas Joker to Hedger.   Don't get me wrong, Hedger played the part phenomenally, but the result was a dark and demented villain, while the Nicolas joker was closer to the comics in his over the top ridiculousness with a psychotic undertone.

Best as Batman: Keaton

You are nuts. The Batman is a huge, dark, menacing, brilliant crime-fighter. Keaton fails miserably in all of these categories.

PS - Nicholson's Joker was one of the worst performances of his career, and Ledger's was one of the most brilliant villains I have ever seen in any movie, anywhere.

I am still waiting for the correct Batman to be portrayed, but to me Keaton's version fits closer that Bale's.  I will agree that Keaton's Bruce Wayne is sorely lacking in anything debonair, but the drastic change to his Batman more closely mimics how I read it originally in the comics.

As far as Ledger's performance, I am with you on the amazing performance he put in, but I just don't picture the Joker like that.  I probably have a bit of childhood weighing on my feelings to this.  I saw the original Batman several times in the theater.

You know a role is good when it kills the actor, very good though.

I thought his role in the next movie was the reason for his depression?

Christian Bale was my favorite Batman because those were the best Batman movies ever made. They treated the story with some seriousness. Director Tom Burton gave the series a whimsical, deranged fairytale vibe that was interesting, but not nearly as good. I say we give Ben Affleck a chance. It's all going to hinge on this -- whether Affleck can do the 'gravelly voice' thing for Batman without making me laugh. Bale was able to do it, but only just barely.

Affleck, in my opinion, is a better director than actor -- but who knows, maybe he'll prove us all wrong.

Best quote from Gigli, back when Affleck was dating Jennifer Lopez:

Lopes: (husky voice) "It's turkey time. Gobble-gobble."

 :blank:

EDIT: My take on the various Bat men.

Adam West: The No-Muscle-Tone Batman. At least he blandished children into brushing their stupid, grimy teeth.
Michael Keaton: One of the better Batmen -- he was probably the second or third best actor in that role. Keaton was able to pull off the hauntedness of the role better than nearly anyone else. He managed to look a little bit mentally unbalanced, which ... well, it makes sense for the character.
Val Kilmer: I poop on you, Val Kilmer. As mentioned earlier, he's a pretty boy, and not much else.
George Clooney: Now we're just slumming. Clooney makes for a good Bruce Wayne, billionaire playboy, which isn't much of an acting stretch. When he was Batman, life was sad and unappealing. Instead of cheering for him, his performance made me feel sort of sad, and ache-y.
Christian Bale: The best Batman to date, but I think he benefitted from a great series of scripts, too. A great actor to begin with, he made the role believable.

This. No other actor has nailed the duality of the character as well as Keaton. He made Bruce Wayne and Batman seem like two entirely different people.

Also that scene when he meets the Joker was just great at letting his insanity bubble a bit to the surface ("You wanna get nuts? Let's get nuts.")

An actor which I wish would have played Batman, a decade or two ago, is Richard Burgi (http://akas.imdb.com/name/nm0121404/?ref_=tt_cl_t1).
He really has/had the look and the physique of how I perceive Batman from the comic books. He has done both action, comedy and more serious roles, and I do think that he can pull of the glint of craziness in Batman without looking just haunted like Bale did or not-taking-it-seriously like most of the other Batman movie actors.

Now, he is too old for playing Batman in his prime, but his age would be perfect for an adaptation of "The Dark Knight Returns" (which would be awesome...). :)
