the s version has a foam ring around the plunger to dampen noise when it hits the housing.  the "clack" sound when the key resets to its original position after being depressed.  i think marketing says it decreases sound by 30%

if you want the type s, i think using a japanese proxy for amazon.jp will be much cheaper and you'll save $150

In japan price diff is like $60-80 elite keyboard just has a larger markup. HHKB from japan is $240 after all costs, HHKKB type S is like $300

Hey evolyn -

If you feel adventurous, you could do what o2dazone and I did to our HHKB's. The two choices would be dental bands, or cutting out your own o-rings.

Dental bands (cheaper, and takes less time) (http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=34972.0): The caveat to this, is that it lessens the travel of the key, but you still get a tactile feel. It's what I am using, and I actually like it a lot.

O-ring modification (http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=40582): This takes quite a bit of labor to do, but is more spot-on to the factory Type-S silencing

I also lubed the sliders on my HHKB (http://i.imgur.com/2YnaOhm.jpg), and it gives it a much more solid feel. almost zero keycap rattle and creates, imo, the smoothest switch I have used. (the pink highlights indicate where to lube)

The o2dazone cut-your-own-orings modification is cheap and works great (at least it did on the 87U on my desk at work). I haven't tried the dental bands version, I was worried about the slightly reduced key travel.

It was a pretty big pain to do, though,

I believe I've also read the Type-S is engineered a big tighter and the plungers/holes are a closer fit. I don't own a Type-S so I haven't been able to confirm this.
