i literally just used mine to play word search puzzles and browse reddit.
the fact you have to keep holding it or find a place to hold it up to type made it annoying.
sold it and used the money for something else.
I love mine for reading the web and checking e-mail without having to sit at my computer. A lot more comfortable to recline with it on a couch. Plus for travel.
I have a Nexus 7 I use for some random games, and sometimes for streaming audio around the apartment. I could never imagine having to work with one of the ****ers, though.

recline on the couch is nice, but all the squinting... how do you put up with all the squinting...
Do you have super human eyes.

these things seem to be selling like hot cake..
Who's buying them... n00bs?
people with immense arm strength/ endurance?
People with 25/20 vision?

my dad loves his (samsung galaxy 10) and so does my brother (ipad mini)
if i did go back to a tablet i'd go with a nexus 7. cheaper than an ipad especially for what im going to use it for.
also, tablet i had was ipad mini. while cool, it was a novelty after awhile. and very expensive.
wait i didnt catch that you said noobs.
so basically i repeated what you already answered.
so yes, noobs.

I WEAR CARGO PANTS!!!!!
I use my android tablet as a remote control for my plex media server in the living room.
I have been very tempted to get a 7" tablet... because there are some things I like.
What I really want is a smaller netbook that does not have a permanently attached keyboard, that I can attach one to only when I need one.
A netbook which boots instantly, with a screen that does not suck.
However....
* The user interface sucks. Face it. Android sucks. iOS is going to suck even more with iOS 7. Not responsive enough. Common old user interface principles such as cancelability and affordance have been thrown out of the window. Not consistent enough. Difficult to use multiple apps at the same time. Not to mention that the user interfaces are ugly and have very white text on very light backgrounds or are very dark.
* I can't seem to be able to do the thing that I most often use a netbook for: offload the images from my camera and do photo editing in the Gimp, before I upload the image to the Net. I don't know if there is any similar functionality available in an app or something. At least, I have not seen any tablet that has a file browser.
The only 7" tablet that seems to be any reasonable performance, according to reviews, are the Nexus 7 (both old and new) ... but those don't have any SD card slot, and I don't know if there is any way to connect the camera to it directly (the camera wants to recharge from the USB anyway, that would drain the tablet's battery, right?)
I had also been thinking of perhaps using a tablet for note-taking, instead of using a physical paper notepad. Something with a good pen, and proper character recognition.
I have tried the Samsung Galaxy Note tablet and phone, and they SUCK BALLS! The pen input lags behind a few seconds, pen can not be used for text input in every app, and the built-in pen apps are ridiculously unstable, crashing after five seconds of use.

Some of these reasons are exactly why I prefer a tablet PC over a tablet. Ability to throw away the keyboard when you don't feel like using it, full operating system in which you can use any program you want, much more responsive than anything you can get with a "mobile" OS. But there are obviously benefits to a tablet, which is having more battery life, and lighter in general. I'm actually thinking about getting the iMate Windows 8 phone (it's a phone with the desktop version of Windows 8 ). It will basically be a netbook in a phone format, with a wireless tablet option. I doubt it will have a Wacom stylus option, but I'm very interested in what they come up with.
Also, Windows RT tablets actually has a file browser. The problem with RT is there just aren't as much multimedia apps yet (for those who wants more) compared to iOS or Android.
Eh, while I don't have a tablet and don't really want one, I can certainly see why people like them. They're like what laptops tried to be, but never could. You can bring it with you and do stuff on it without having to awkwardly rest it on your legs or something like you'd have to do with a laptop.

wa..... at no point is resting a tablet on (anything) or (anywhere) easier to use than a laptop.Show Image(http://www.cute-factor.com/images/smilies/onion/8dcf9699.gif)
I'm actually thinking about getting the iMate Windows 8 phone (it's a phone with the desktop version of Windows 8 ).Would it be possible to connect an Apple Desktop Bus Keyboard to that phone? ;) ;)
I think with the haswell, surface pro will be pretty beast..I don't need haswell. I would be happy with 7" and ARM. It is the software and the connectivity that is lacking.

Such a tablet should only cost $300 at the most, which is what a netbook used to cost.
Another thing that I would like with a tablet is a proper docking station. Just put it in the dock and press the Sync button and it should automatically sync with my PC, or even connect to a paired NAS even if the PC is not turned on.
PalmPilot did this right, but that was before ubiquitous networking. Have you seen any docking station for any 7" tablet? I haven't. Only wireless charging stations, but a charging station does not need to be wireless if it can dock properly.
I contemplated a tablet for awhile, but I figured everything I could do with it, I could do with my phone (albeit with a smaller screen), while keeping it in my pocket and not having to worry about where I will get internet from.
Literally every time I've seen someone using a tablet, I see them scroll around on the screen because they don't know what to do with it, then turn off the screen, then do that another time, then open an app, then close it, then watch a video or something.

This also describes most people on their smart phones. :D
I think it's cuz most people buy these things on hype and novelty rather than utility. Pretty sure that's why my dad was like "want NAO, go buy" after he played with one for like 2 mins at a friend's house.
People are still arguing about the utility of tablets in 2013? That ship has already sailed guys. We know who won that argument ;)

The non-geeks. My dad. Your dad, whom you somehow seem to think is not as smart as you, simply because he bought a tablet. The average person won. The "noobs". And it's a good thing too. Computing shouldn't be the province of geeks only.
You're really just asking for a better, faster netbook @ $300...Yes, that is what I wrote! A 7" netbook with modern specs and no keyboard. The hardware in the Nexus 7 (SRP at $230) is OK, but the software on that thing was not made for netbook use-cases, and it lacks ports.

The average person is still a god damned idiot.
The average person expects technology to Just Work.
They don't even want to have to configure it, it should just do what they want in the way they want it.

You're not alone in the anti-tablet thing. I've used various iPaids and Android tabs, but none of them really deliver the experience of a REAL computer. Typing on one feels like sacrilege after all of the work I put into learning to touch-type - a skill which did NOT come easily to me.

But that's the problem. They're really not meant to replace a computer. So of course you feel like it's inadequate at doing so. They're meant to be an in-between to a smart phone and a computer, a niche which we have clearly established on here that most people do not need or want, so it's therefore an even smaller niche since it overlaps so much with the other two. However, I still don't get why everyone here is completely forgetting about the people who don't have smartphones. A tablet is a very viable alternative to a smartphone for some people.

I updated the table buyers guide (borrowed original from Google Images).

Typing on one feels like sacrilege after all of the work I put into learning to touch-type - a skill which did NOT come easily to me.And the on-screen keyboards are still staggered, but they ARE ****ING NOT USING STANDARD STAGGERING.

This means that even if the keys are big enough on the tablet's screen, I still have to look at the keyboard to make sure that I hit the right keys. My muscle memory is not useful any more.
This CRIME is perpetrated not only by Apple, but also by Google Android, Blackberry and Windows 8.
Windows 7's touch keyboard (in a window on the desktop) actually had standard staggering, but could not be resized to make the keys big enough.
Microsoft Surface Pro and I believe RT as well, has pretty much standard spacing on their touch screen keyboard. The ZXCV row is only 1/4 off but off in the wrong direction if you are a touch typist.

I'm sorry, I was wrong about the Windows 7 screen keyboard earlier. It has a uniform 1/2 key staggering, not standard staggering.

I haven't got a smartphone. Nothing mobile whatsoever. When I'm out and about, I don't need anything.

I honestly have never seen anyone with a tablet and not having a smartphone. Whether it's a BlackBerry, iPhone, Windows Phone, Symbian, MeeGo, Android, or whatever, all tablet users I have seen as at least one smartphone.

I'm merely putting forth the idea that not all tablet users are "stupid" for having both a smartphone and a tablet, since they don't all need to have smartphones. I agree that the majority do. And I agree that that's a bit silly.

Precisely. This isn't 2010 anymore, guys. The future of personal computing is basically: Smartphone = everyone's ubiquitous computing/communication device, including developing world eventually. Tablet = what the desktop PC was twenty years ago, or what the laptop was ten years ago. The default computer for average people for media consumption/entertainment/light productivity. Laptop = what the desktop used to be; domain of professionals, business sector, content creators, actual work, people more invested into using their computer to rely solely on a tablet. Desktop = enthusiast/high-end productivity niche.
