Title: Finally got a tablet
Post by: tp4tissue on Sun, 25 August 2013, 22:39:22
Dad wanted one, curiosity i guess..

I was bored with it after 10 minutes..

why would anyone use this if they "dont-have-to"

Cons vs PC

You have to hold it

Lift it to your eye level

Or

Bend your neck to look down at it

finger gets in the way of the screen when scrolling

screen is quite small, very clear, but there's still alot of squinting. feels like back in the day when I had my 12" crt monitor.

Internet is not responsive due to wifi.  No choice to plug in an Ethernet cable

This is torture.....

What do you people fancy about this thing...

Am I the only guy that no like tablet?

I'm gonna send this thing back...

i literally just used mine to play word search puzzles and browse reddit.

the fact you have to keep holding it or find a place to hold it up to type made it annoying.

sold it and used the money for something else.

I love mine for reading the web and checking e-mail without having to sit at my computer.  A lot more comfortable to recline with it on a couch. Plus for travel.

recline on the couch is nice,  but all the squinting...   how do you put up with all the squinting...

Do you have super human eyes.

i must also be more of a pansy than I thought I was, cuz my arms got tired from holding the thing after only a few minutes..

I have a Nexus 7 I use for some random games, and sometimes for streaming audio around the apartment. I could never imagine having to work with one of the ****ers, though.

I mainly use mine for watching videos - I can start and stop from where I left off wherever I am.

And without a notebook, I sometimes use it for browsing while afk, in bed for example.

I don't use it anywhere near as much as I thought I would.  Just as well it didn't cost me anything ;)

people that dont like sitting in front of their computers like we do.

my dad loves his (samsung galaxy 10) and so does my brother (ipad mini)

if i did go back to a tablet i'd go with a nexus 7. cheaper than an ipad especially for what im going to use it for.

also, tablet i had was ipad mini. while cool, it was a novelty after awhile. and very expensive.

well, it's my dad's tablet, he seems quite happy with it,  eating up 75% of my CPU cycles transcoding videos from my BDiso over the network...   (http://www.freesmileys.org/emoticons/tuzki-bunnys/tuzki-bunny-emoticon-007.gif)

I wouldn't get a tablet because I have a phone, but I would get a tablet PC. What I don't get is people who has a phone and brings a tablet along with a laptop to school. What's the point of the tablet?

conclusion: stupid unnecessary fad item for people who like to play farmville and check facebook without actually doing anything productive

Or... for people who have desktops for all the productive stuff and cell phones for 3/4G connections and just want a tablet to recline with and travel with.  I don't get all the tablet hate.  If it's not for you, don't generalize for others in such a derogatory manner.

Spend 0 dollars on a phone that is just a phone and spend 250 dollars for a tablet that does all the smart phone things I want it to all while not being tied to a contract and paying monthly fees.  Yay!  Not everyone has a smartphone btw.

I crapped on tablets for years too. But hey, I got one used for a price I liked from the classifieds section, just to use as a portable 10" e-reader/picross player/geekhack viewer. It's great when you're lazy as hell and don't feel like being on a desktop, and it's way better than doing those same three things on a 4" phone.

I have been very tempted to get a 7" tablet... because there are some things I like.
What I really want is a smaller netbook that does not have a permanently attached keyboard, that I can attach one to only when I need one.
A netbook which boots instantly, with a screen that does not suck.

However....
* The user interface sucks. Face it. Android sucks. iOS is going to suck even more with iOS 7. Not responsive enough. Common old user interface principles such as cancelability and affordance have been thrown out of the window. Not consistent enough. Difficult to use multiple apps at the same time. Not to mention that the user interfaces are ugly and have very white text on very light backgrounds or are very dark.
* I can't seem to be able to do the thing that I most often use a netbook for: offload the images from my camera and do photo editing in the Gimp, before I upload the image to the Net. I don't know if there is any similar functionality available in an app or something. At least, I have not seen any tablet that has a file browser.
The only 7" tablet that seems to be any reasonable performance, according to reviews, are the Nexus 7 (both old and new) ... but those don't have any SD card slot, and I don't know if there is any way to connect the camera to it directly (the camera wants to recharge from the USB anyway, that would drain the tablet's battery, right?)

I had also been thinking of perhaps using a tablet for note-taking, instead of using a physical paper notepad. Something with a good pen, and proper character recognition.
I have tried the Samsung Galaxy Note tablet and phone, and they SUCK BALLS! The pen input lags behind a few seconds, pen can not be used for text input in every app, and the built-in pen apps are ridiculously unstable, crashing after five seconds of use.

Some of these reasons are exactly why I prefer a tablet PC over a tablet. Ability to throw away the keyboard when you don't feel like using it, full operating system in which you can use any program you want, much more responsive than anything you can get with a "mobile" OS. But there are obviously benefits to a tablet, which is having more battery life, and lighter in general. I'm actually thinking about getting the iMate Windows 8 phone (it's a phone with the desktop version of Windows 8 ). It will basically be a netbook in a phone format, with a wireless tablet option. I doubt it will have a Wacom stylus option, but I'm very interested in what they come up with.

Also, Windows RT tablets actually has a file browser. The problem with RT is there just aren't as much multimedia apps yet (for those who wants more) compared to iOS or Android.

Eh, while I don't have a tablet and don't really want one, I can certainly see why people like them. They're like what laptops tried to be, but never could. You can bring it with you and do stuff on it without having to awkwardly rest it on your legs or something like you'd have to do with a laptop.

I only use mine in the bathroom :3 Although in the long run its probably cheaper than purchasing "x" newspapers over my lifetime. As for squinting they invented something for that [Glasses] Huehuehue... but really? Most apps, internet etc. allow you to zoom in?

I tried using my iPad in bed but I dropped it on my face and gave myself a nose bleed, lucky my nose didn't break I guess.

It's simple really. It's all about the form factor. Desktop computers, laptops and tablets are each better at some things and worse at others.

If I'm working, I'll use the desktop. If I'm heading out for a client meeting, I'll grab the laptop. For everything else, as long as it doesn't involve too much typing, I'll sit back with a tablet. If I was only allowed one device, I'd pick the laptop. But hey, why restrict oneself to one device.

What I'm saying is; if you want to do computer stuff on the couch, you can just hold a tablet in your hands and do whatever you need. If you have a laptop you'll either have to rest it on your lap, which is all kinds of bad, or put it on a coffee table and have to hunch uncomfortably over it. Or if you're on the train or walking to work/school/anything, you can just pop out the tablet and do whatever it is. Yes, you can do that with a smartphone as well, but those are horribly tiny and awkward to use unless you're really in a hurry or you're in an emergency.

I'm actually thinking about getting the iMate Windows 8 phone (it's a phone with the desktop version of Windows 8 ).
Would it be possible to connect an Apple Desktop Bus Keyboard to that phone? ;) ;)
I smell a trademark lawsuit coming ...

I think with the haswell, surface pro will be pretty beast..
I don't need haswell. I would be happy with 7" and ARM. It is the software and the connectivity that is lacking.
Such a tablet should only cost $300 at the most, which is what a netbook used to cost.

Another thing that I would like with a tablet is a proper docking station. Just put it in the dock and press the Sync button and it should automatically sync with my PC, or even connect to a paired NAS even if the PC is not turned on.
PalmPilot did this right, but that was before ubiquitous networking. Have you seen any docking station for any 7" tablet? I haven't. Only wireless charging stations, but a charging station does not need to be wireless if it can dock properly.

whatever a 7 inch tablet would dock into wouldn't have a very useful keyboard, which defeats the whole point of docking.

If you condense all the 'stuff" you asked for in your post, then we already have that today, it's called a netbook.. You're really just asking for a better, faster netbook @ $300...  (http://www.cute-factor.com/images/smilies/onion/4d6161fd.gif)

I contemplated a tablet for awhile, but I figured everything I could do with it, I could do with my phone (albeit with a smaller screen), while keeping it in my pocket and not having to worry about where I will get internet from.

Literally every time I've seen someone using a tablet, I see them scroll around on the screen because they don't know what to do with it, then turn off the screen, then do that another time, then open an app, then close it, then watch a video or something.

This also describes most people on their smart phones. :D

I think it's cuz most people buy these things on hype and novelty rather than utility. Pretty sure that's why my dad was like "want NAO, go buy" after he played with one for like 2 mins at a friend's house.

to be fair, its really hard to read a comic on my S3 lol.
The iPad Mini is just the perfect size for comic reader.

I tried the Asus Transformer Infinity, but just didn't like the 10" size.
I also found Android Tablets really pale in comparison to iOS with app support.
Most android apps are obviously mainly for phone use, you have more dedicated tablet versions on iOS.

And this is coming from someone who's not an apple fan =)

Got a Samsung Something 7 some months ago, only because it was a good deal (NIB for 100 bucks ...the dude needed money).
Didn't know what to do with it, so I gave it to my dad (he was still using a old cellphone for internet browsing), he loves it ^^

I'm really dizzy this morning and keep reading the thread title as "Finally got a toilet."

I think the end result is about the same.

I updated the tablet buyers guide (borrowed original from Google Images).

P.S. I mean no harm by the contents, if it's upsetting I'll delete it!

The non-geeks. My dad. Your dad, whom you somehow seem to think is not as smart as you, simply because he bought a tablet. The average person won. The "noobs". And it's a good thing too. Computing shouldn't be the province of geeks only.

You're really just asking for a better, faster netbook @ $300...
Yes, that is what I wrote! A 7" netbook with modern specs and no keyboard. The hardware in the Nexus 7 (SRP at $230) is OK, but the software on that thing was not made for netbook use-cases, and it lacks ports.

The average person expects technology to Just Work.

They don't even want to have to configure it, it should just do what they want in the way they want it.

I like the surface. I have a Pro, my finance has an RT. We use them all the time. They feel so much like computers, I find myself trying to swipe my primary PC monitors.

I'm not a fan of them either. I got one for my father, since his netbook started derping up, but I don't think I'd get one for myself.

I guess I could use one to have an API open when I'm programming (if I didn't have a second monitor) or a browser to look things up, but that's pretty much it.

A friend of mine likes them, he got his for when he visits clients for diets, you know note-taking, showing diets... It's useful for him and my father, my father all he did on the netbook was to browse sites and play solitaire hehehe

Tablet = oversized smartphone that doesn't make phone calls

OR

Tablet = unwieldy netbook with less functionality

conclusion: stupid unnecessary fad item for people who like to play farmville and check facebook without actually doing anything productive

if only a company could make a tablet sized phone..

Got an iPad Mini and a Surface Pro. The iPad is nice and all, but it's mainly just for browsing and reading (via Kindle app). I just like using a keyboard too much to really take the iPad seriously. The Surface Pro is a nice little dev machine (handy for taking notes with the pen, too).

You're not alone in the anti-tablet thing.  I've used various iPaids and Android tabs, but none of them really deliver the experience of a REAL computer. Typing on one feels like sacrilege after all of the work I put into learning to touch-type - a skill which did NOT come easily to me.

But that's the problem.  They're really not meant to replace a computer.  So of course you feel like it's inadequate at doing so.  They're meant to be an in-between to a smart phone and a computer, a niche which we have clearly established on here that most people do not need or want, so it's therefore an even smaller niche since it overlaps so much with the other two.  However, I still don't get why everyone here is completely forgetting about the people who don't have smartphones.  A tablet is a very viable alternative to a smartphone for some people.

Typing on one feels like sacrilege after all of the work I put into learning to touch-type - a skill which did NOT come easily to me.
And the on-screen keyboards are still staggered, but they ARE ****ING NOT USING STANDARD STAGGERING.
This means that even if the keys are big enough on the tablet's screen, I still have to look at the keyboard to make sure that I hit the right keys. My muscle memory is not useful any more.
This CRIME is perpetrated not only by Apple, but also by Google Android, Blackberry and Windows 8.
Windows 7's touch keyboard (in a window on the desktop) actually had standard staggering, but could not be resized to make the keys big enough.

Microsoft Surface Pro and I believe RT as well, has pretty much standard spacing on their touch screen keyboard. The vertical spacing isn't standard, but it's not as big of a deal because even if you don't hit a key directly in the center, you are still going to hit the correct key.

The ZXCV row is only 1/4 off but off in the wrong direction if you are a touch typist.

I'm sorry, I was wrong about the Windows 7 screen keyboard earlier. It has a uniform 1/2 key staggering, not standard staggering.

You are correct about the ZXCV row, just noticed that. It is indeed shifted 1/4 unit to the right to make room for the shift key.

The on-screen keyboard has the QWERTY row shifted 1/4 units to the left (on Windows 8 ).

I'm merely putting forth the idea that not all tablet users are "stupid" for having both a smartphone and a tablet, since they don't all need to have smartphones.  I agree that the majority do.  And I agree that that's a bit silly.

The non-geeks. My dad. Your dad, whom you somehow seem to think is not as smart as you, simply because he bought a tablet. The average person won. The "noobs". And it's a good thing too. Computing shouldn't be the province of geeks only.

Precisely. This isn't 2010 anymore, guys. The future of personal computing is basically: Smartphone = everyone's ubiquitous computing/communication device, including developing world eventually. Tablet = what the desktop PC was twenty years ago, or what the laptop was ten years ago. The default computer for average people for media consumption/entertainment/light productivity. Laptop = what the desktop used to be; domain of professionals, business sector, content creators, actual work, people more invested into using their computer to rely solely on a tablet. Desktop = enthusiast/high-end productivity niche.

i'm thinking about getting an ipad mini, or rather my wife saw it and was thinking about it, my wife is an engineer, currently she's traveling to and from a plant she's building, she has 2 ipads. a work ipad that she can use in the field to whip out and look at pdfs/ diagrams or just go to emails to double check stuff. usually when my wife is doing this, she is with other co-workers, you're not gonna go "here let me show you and try to scroll on a 3.5in iphone a pdf that is 200megs", you use an ipad.

i got her a personal ipad a while ago, since she travels so much it has replaced her kindle (which broke anyway) and i pay for huluplus so she can watch hulu on the tablet(hulu is free but you u pay for a subscription if you want to watch it on devices, and you get HD), We're thinking about getting netflix again, but seems like amazon prime would be a better option... yea all this on a tablet.

again she travels, and she's not gonna watch hulu on her work laptop... sure other ppl do, but other ppl also get fired for it.

since we stopped playing diablo3 almost a year ago, she hasn't turned on her computer in almost a year, she can do everything with the ipad. she can lay in bed, watch youtube, browse websites and if she wants to, use it as a remote to control our bedroom HTPC and have a second screen up.

Its a niche item. Tough to spend the cash on, but if you happen to have one or get one  as a gift they are great to have around the house. Anything smaller than a 10" screen makes it a redundant device...too close in size to the big phones that are coming out these days.  If you are squinting....try pinching to zoom or get a bigger tab.
