Title: Help me pick a new monitor
Post by: ComradeSniper on Mon, 26 August 2013, 16:17:48
My 5 year old Viewsonic monitor isn't really cutting it anymore, so I've decided I'd like a new monitor.

I'd like to try out something with a 16:10 aspect ratio. I'd love something in 2560x1600 but all the monitors I've seen in that resolution are out of my price range, so I'm looking mainly at 1920x1200. Would also like an IPS panel.

It looks like the Dell Ultrasharp U2412 (http://www.amazon.com/Dell-UltraSharp-U2412-24-Inch-LED-lit/dp/B005JN9310)   is exactly what I want, but I'd like to see some other options. I don't mind spending a little bit more than that if it's worth it, would rather not do much more than $350 though.

Please let me know what you think about 16:10 over 16:9 and what other monitors you might reccomend.

Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

If you can find a way to get $5000 or so, the new sharp 32" 4k is BEAST...

If you can get $1100 or so, the wfp3014 goes on sale for around that.. using dell giftcard bonuses can get it to $900

I can't recommend anything smaller than a 27"

and PLEASE do yourself a favor and get the $500-700 panel..

The $350 panels have very weak contrast, poor back lighting, and subpar processing chips..

I love my 16:10 U2410, I wouldn't go back to 16:9 for anything. The extra vertical space is super nice!

I also highly recommend IPS based monitors. It's another thing I wouldn't trade for anything. The colors look so nice from a very large viewing angle

Tbh the $500-$700 panels are a lot more than I'd like to spend and I think even the "subpar" U2412 will be a massive step up from the 1920x1080 TN I've got now.

I can tell you like anime...

Anime must be watched using Madvr @ 2560x1440 upscaled (http://www.cute-factor.com/images/smilies/onion/th_113_.gif)

That dell is a very very nice monitor!  another option if you are a gamer is the eizo forris f2333 http://www.eizo.com/global/products/foris/fs2333/

Get the Dell U2412M. They're fantastic monitors. There are a lot of complaints about the heavy AG coating, but as long as your monitors don't face windows you won't notice. I have 2 of the Dell U2412M's and glad I bought them.

if I I were on the lookout for a new monitor right now, I'd def go for one of those ultra-wide monitors...  Dell, LG and I think NEC makes them, and they're quite reasonable.  It's like a dual monitor setup with one screen.  Check em out.

The Dell's are great monitors, but after using a 27", I just can't go back to a smaller one.  For the $$, I would go here (27" 1080p LG IPS) 10% off w/ promo code LGCMNT10, ends 9/1 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824005495 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824005495).  I know that the higher res monitors look better, but they require quite a bit of gpu to power them if you plan on doing some gaming.  A 1080 monitor that is at the back of a desk will keep you from hunching over trying to see it.

My next monitor will be one of the newer wide screen units.  I have had dual and triple setups, but for anything other than work, I don't care for it.

This looks really nice, I would prefer a bit higher res but I'd also love a 27" monitor. Thanks for the suggestion.

Also, I was planning on upgrading from my current GTX 570 to a 770 when I get the new monitor, so I think that should be enough power for gaming on 1920x1200.

With a 770, you should be fine on a higher res monitor than 1080.  You may need to drop out the antialaising, but that is not even needed with high res.  with a 1080 and a 770, you will be able to max everything for the foreseeable future.  I game with a 660Ti 2gb and have most games at high or ultra settings with 4x aa and manage above 40 fps.

you have no choice but to get a DELL ULTRASHARP U2713HM. They go on sale for $550 and are AMAZING. I will never go back to 1920x1080 again.

I would definitely say go for a U2412M. I have one, it's a great monitor, and honestly, for playing games, you don't REALLY need that 10-bit color gamut or the full IPS.

Also, a 770 is plenty for 1200p. I have a HD 6850 and I can play games on it.

I'm going to recommend the Qnix QX2710. Spend the $250 you save on something else, like a Topre board or ErgoDox.
